Re: Ladies and Gentleman, Miss Grace Jones - The Official Grace Jones Thread

Grace Jones readies first U.S. release in 22 years

Long before the shock jock tactics of artists like Lady Gaga and Bjork, there was the inimitable Grace Jones.
Known for her androgynous features, sky-high flat top and over the top outfits, the Jamaican-born singer rose to prominence in the 1980s. She frequented famed discotheque, Studio 54, became a muse for Andy Warhol and served as style inspiration for many female singers to come.
She also topped the charts with her signature blend of New-Wave pop and synth-laden dance numbers like “Slave to the Rhythm” and “I’m Not Perfect (But I’m Perfect For You).
Now at the ripe age of 63, Jones is ready to release new material.

The new album is titled “Hurricane V2 (In Dub)” and is expected to drop in the U.S. on September 6.

It is a rerelease of Jones’ 2008 album “Hurricane,” and is entirely in dub. It is produced by Ivor Guest and will also include contributions from ambient mastermind, Brian Eno.
Where the original album was a bit darker and less poppy than Jones’ previous releases, the dub version is sure to be perfect dancefloor antidote.

Grace's music was played at the first underground party I went to during college in Los Angeles 1984. Very cool evening.

Love Grace Jones!

Re: Ladies and Gentleman, Miss Grace Jones - The Official Grace Jones Thread

Born in Jamaica, Grace Jones has never shied away from her West Indian roots. Incorporating Caribbean styles, her seminal early 80s albums made frequent use of the legendary studio at Compass Point.

Returning with her new album 'Hurricane' in 2008, Grace Jones took the echoes of dub to an intense standard. Inspiring some under-the-counter remixes, Digital Mystikz supplied a stunning re-working of 'Love You To Life'.

Seemingly taking this on board, Grace Jones confirmed plans for a dub remix album earlier this year. Ivor Guest stood at the controls, with the singer's material given a complete re-working by the producer.

As ever, image is paramount to Grace Jones. The cover for 'Hurricane Dub' features an image from one time creative partner Jean-Paul Goude of the singer wearing a trademark Philip Treacy hat.

Set to drop on September 5th, 'Hurricane Dub' could well turn out to be a fascinating about-turn from Grace Jones.

Grace Jones - 'Hurricane/Dub' (Wall Of Sound) Released: 05/09/11

4 out of 5 stars(!)

It’s not that surprising really, a dub album by Grace Jones. Known for pushing boundaries and merging genres with class and sophistication, this record is another exploration into the weird and wonderful for Jones and with the help of producer Ivor Guest, she manages to create a record almost as mystifying as herself.

The record comes as a bonus disc on the Deluxe Edition of her 2008 release 'Hurricane'. The original record itself has scatterings of dub, particularly track ‘Well Well Well’ and perhaps for someone with Jones’ creativity, a dub version of the record is a natural extension.

With t-shirts showing her iconic image and name checks from Lil’ Wayne, Grace Jones is on the periphery of pop culture. People wearing the t-shirts may not know her music, as Lil’ Wayne fans may not, but this is a modern sounding record with bass drops and synth that would not sound out of place on Rinse FM. Of course, with the popularity of Dubstep, it is not only a chance to explore new musical pastures, but a smart commercial idea to record a dub album at the moment, and Jones capitalises.

Her trademark reggae tinged funk which features heavily on the original record is a perfect match with the sounds found here, ‘This Is Dub’ is a great opener, and the most contemporary sounding track on the album. Jones’ opening vocals are endearing and the track squirms over a grimy bassline. The album then reverts into proper dub. Chill out tracks with a laid-back reggae beat and Jones’ chopped up vocals appearing sparsely. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but it is a delight to hear it done properly by an artist who knows what she is doing. ‘Sunset Dub’ is another standout track, a mid tempo groove featuring a hypnotic bass hook echoing Bob Marley. ‘Devil Dub’ is also a worthy version of the brilliant original track, with it’s eery piano flushes and a nice beat to fall back on.

If you are in to dub music, or if you are a fan of Grace Jones, this record will be not only appealing, but satisfying. Ivor Guest has done a fine job of creating a record to accompany the original, as well as stand up as an individual record.

Album review: Grace Jones' 'Hurricane'

Four stars (out of four)(!)

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/music_blog/2011/09/album-review-grace-jones-hurricane.html

It’s been 18 years since the inimitable Grace Jones released an album stateside, but the legendary new-wave, nightclubbing diva was always light years ahead of her time; in a Gaga world, she sounds more relevant than ever. Downright prescient, in fact: How could the Jamaican-born fashion and music icon have known that an album called "Hurricane" would be stunningly apropos right now? (Especially since it was released in Europe a couple of years ago.)

Please let me be one whit as cool as Jones when I’m well into my fifth decade. No one intones like the stentorian Warhol muse -- and then she breaks into vibrato-driven song, throbbing and strong. She’s fierce on the declarative "This Is," lacerating on the YouTube favorite "Corporate Cannibal," sinister and sexy on "Love You to Life" ("attracted to immorality / a magnet to immortality"), mournful and moving on "I’m Crying (Mother’s Tears)."

In Jones’ hands, with the help of island legends Sly and Robbie, reggae pulses with menace and bristles with intrigue. Brian Eno helps deliver the illbeint atmosphere with keyboards and "treatments" that lurk, poke and crash, and Tricky spits his thing on the title track. But mostly it’s Jones, along with co-producer Ivor Guest, who delivers this unquiet storm of a comeback.

Awesome return for Ms. Grace Jones. Brilliant production. Sly and Robbie, as always, hold it down and keep it tight.

Music's Best Fashion Moments of 2011

Grace Jones Maintains Her Edge

This past autumn, Jean-Paul Goude, one of the most paramount fashion photographers of the 1980s and the man who made Grace Jones a robotic pop icon, displayed a collection of his portraits of the singer, bringing to mind just how much her shockingly modern and avant-garde visual tested pop's outer limits. And how fearless it remains: now 63, Jones remains the original Amazonian post-everything style dynamo, as seen in the assemblage of recent live footage captured here.
