Johnny Appleseed is huge here. Streets named after him, town fairs in his honor. His real name is John Chapman. I don't know if anyone outside of the Midwest has heard of him. My grandpa always told me the big Apple tree in his front yard was planted by Johnny Appleseed spitting out a seed there.

I've always found Sawney Bean to be intriguing ever since I heard about him.

He seems to have been used as the local boggy man no matter what your location in Scotland is.

I was taught the story in school here in Ontario. We didn't celebrate him or anything, but we knew about him. And Paul Bunyan and Babe, too.

You're right. He started orchards in Pennsylvania, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, as well as Ontario. He was quite the land barren. I was just reading up on him last month after a trip to Amish Country. We passed thru 2 towns that were having Johnny Appleseed festivals. My own city has an apple festival every fall.

I loved Johnny Appleseed as a kid, can honestly say it sparked my interest in gardening.
Second, was Ichabod Crane from The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. (personal, family/sentimental reasons)
Always loved the story.

Also loved reading Aesop's Fables as a kid.
