Film remakes you prefer over the original?

Speaking of the TCM films, what did you think about the sequels? The first and second were OK to me, but The Next Generation with Renee Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey was all kinds of "WTF?!". It grew more and more insane and I loved every minute of it.

I only saw part two. All I remember is Dennis Hopper running around and screaming incoherently. I had no idea Renee Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey were in one of the sequels. Sounds ridiculous ond over the top, like "Seed of Chucky", the only movie title I know of (so far) that refers to doll semen.

It's more of a reimagining than a remake, but I much prefer "Flesh for Frankenstein" (aka Andy Warhol's Frankenstein) over any of the crusty old versions. Blood for Dracula" is good too, but not as good as the former.

 It's definitely that:

I need to check out Flesh for Frankenstein and Blood for Dracula. Have you seen Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula remake Bram Stoker's Dracula?

^ What a terrible Leatherface!

I like McConaughey. I'll have to see that.

Check out Flesh For Frankenstein first; it's much better. Both films have a definitive gay slant.

I'd post the trailer but it's terrible and you wouldn't want to see it.

On the contrary, the trailer is so "WTF" that it's piqued my interest even more:

The Hills Have Eyes.

I don't think it is necessarily better, but I think the Dawn of the Dead remake is on par with the original for different reasons.

^Ditto on The Hills Have Eyes.

I forgot to mention the remake for Cat People:

The remake of "Hairspray" is better than the one with Divine in it?!? I don't see it. And Jumanji? Who could do comedy better than Robin Williams?

Nah. The Rock's okay, but comedy genius he isn't. He just mugs for the camera. Special effects seem to "catch" people (and the whole "hot body" thing) rather than the acting chops. Nobody in the remake of Jumanji was as good an actor as the original 1995 version, in my estimation. But, to each his own.

  • Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Philip Kaufman's 1978 version is superior to the 1956 version with Kevin McCarthy)
  • 1984 (the 1984 version with John Hurt is probably one of the best adaptations of a novel to a film ever made, and much more faithful to the book than the 1956 version with Edmund O'Brien)
  • The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008) - Michael Rennie's a better actor than Keanu Reeves, but there's something about Keanu's face and delivery that truly seems alien.
