Florida High School Massacre

Unfortunately for the families who lost loved ones, their children will just become statistics in a sea of them, where nothing will ever change.

As for the veterans being guards...lol. America does such a shit job taking care of them now, what makes you think they’ll get those jobs? Although I’m sure the government wouldn’t mind throwing them in front of gunfire again because they are nothing but cannon fodder to them anyway. Let’s stop pretending that’s so long term solution. Banks have guards and multiple other security measures, they still ge robbed. Go figure.

The Trump angle remains a distraction. When Democrats controlled Congress, we still didn't get the needed reforms. It's a fallacy to suggest they are not all panderers and pawns of the moneyed lobbies. There are very very few men of principle under the iron dome.

The Democrats have tried repeatedly to enact stronger controls...

The NRA donation list speaks for itself....

The NRA OWNS the Republican Party...lock, stock and barrel.

You can read the top recipients assinine "thoughts and prayers" statements. They make me want to puke.

After spending a few hours yesterday with my son at school for Valentines Day and coming home to this, he wants to know why the guy did it. And it was Ash Wednesday yesterday, too. Then my son wants to know if it could happen at his school.
I think I slept 30 minutes last night. My eyes won't stop leaking today. Everyone with a heart grieves today.

Are you for real???

It has to be a cultural thing, i know just the thought of the teachers here packing a pistol on their person would cause such an outcry.

I can remember the fuss made when metal detectors were installed in certain secondary schools in London.

Security needs to be beefed up in schools teachers should be armed and having armed security guards would help out a lot. Someone posted an idea of having retired vets and retired police work as armed security guards in schools and other public places.
That's utterly crazy.

I will never get used to occassionaly seeing armed police patrolling my local city centre. That has only happened very recently purely because of the Islamist terrorism threats. It seems in the US you scarcely need to worry about terrorism when your own fellow citizens, armed to the teeth with all manner of high-powered assault weapons, pose a far greater threat.

I cannot even begine to imagine what it must feel like to send your children off to school one day, only to have the never return because they were shot dead by some nutter with easy access to guns.

Then why are most mass shooters democrats?

Precisely: fight them with their own weapons

So you keep a complete record of every single shooter's mental development... it's truly noteworthy in the case of political sympathies in the USA, given how little dems and reps differ... except, maybe, concerning the rabbit's guns thing

Then why are most mass shooters democrats?

Why are you so easily fooled by false propaganda stories on Facebook?

Suspect had ties to local white supremacist group, ADL says
The spokesperson for a Florida-based white supremacist groups says the Florida shooting suspect has ties with the group, according to an Anti-Defamation League report.

According to the ADL, a spokesperson for the “Republic of Florida” was reached on the group’s hotline and said that Nikolas Cruz as associated with the group and “was brought up” by another member. The spokesperson said Cruz had “participated in one or more ROF training exercises in the Tallahassee area, carpooling with other ROF members from south Florida.”

Meanwhile, in the fact-based world...

Now let's see what trump calls him since he is one of them..a white supremist like trump and SO MANY of his followers...

I am guessing "mentally ill" ...lone wolf...

It would be dull witted to not approach this problem with a multi pronged solution. Cancers are approached in many cases with surgery, radiation and chemo.

Metal detectors, maybe guards of some type, perhaps armed, along with some form of mental health help and an awareness program similar to the stranger danger being taught at grade grade schools. We have a national emergency, everything should be on the table.

^As i said a cultural thing.

Guns, contrary to what you may hear, are very hard to get in the UK. This is because after the Dunblane massacre, the government moved very quickly and totally banned handguns and rifles from ownership by the general public.

Here our problem is knife crime, your national emergency is the wanton massacre of people because of the ease of buying firearms.

Our national emergency is knifes. Although having said all that, guns are becoming more widespread here, in particular in London and the South of England.

As has been said already in this thread, people are uncomfortable when seeing armed police officers on routine patrol. What you have to realise is that up to about ten years ago, our police carried a wooden truncheon, handcuffs and a radio.

Now they as a matter of routine carry telescopic batons, CS spray, and Tazers. It is a sad sign of the times here, but it is what it is.

The unusual thing is, when polled the majority of our police have stated that they do not wish to be armed 24/7.

My outlook is more like yours, i spent a few years in the RAF as an RAF Policeman, we were always armed whilst on duty, in my time it was the 9mm Browning, and the SMG (sub machine-gun).

Our countries are seperated by more than a common language. Firearms, and our view on them being a prime example.

^^
We have those here that get their panties in a bunch if gun control is mentioned, others that stroke out at the thought of guards.
As you might have noticed in this thread, it becomes a political football. Sad.

^A political football is a very apt description, as it seems to be kicked from one side of the House to the other.

I think that i have a pretty good handle on Americans and their reaction to any 2nd Amendment changes, but i think i may well be in the minority when it comes to the UK.

I think that what that Rifle Guy said makes perfect sense: the schools are filled up with drugs and sex, so guns and unchained violence between good-guy-with-a-gun against the other good-guy-with-a-gun (who is the bad guy to the other) seems the next and definite move to go for.

Security needs to be beefed up in schools...
For the most part that has been done. Fences around school grounds with metal detectors at the entry points. Even guards roaming the halls and checking in on classes. It doesn't really help much, just adds another level of pervasive fear over the schools, not to mention making them look more like prisons than educational facilities.

teachers should be armed
NO!!!!! Teachers are there to teach the students. The moment they stop thinking of their students as students and start thinking of them as potential targets to be shot they have lost and the school might as well be shut down. The kids wont be learning anything, at least not anything worth learning.

and having armed security guards would help out a lot.
Yes and no. Armed security treating the students with courtesy and respect might have them feeling safer... But again, lets face it, since most of the school shootings are perpetrated by students/former students the security guards will forever be scanning the halls attempting to assess which of the subjects need to be potential targets. The kids will stop being individuals who need protecting and will instead become targets.

Someone posted an idea of having retired vets and retired police work as armed security guards in schools and other public places. Everyone can debate guns for years to decades but nothing is being done.
Things are being done, but they aren't effective enough, and in the end only exacerbate the issue rather than overcome it.

Like all public schools in Florida there are police officers on campus, they are called school resource officers. There were two armed full time Broward county sheriff deputies at Parkland High school when assassinations occurred.
Again I will repeat there were 2 full time, professionally trained sheriff deputies that were armed at the time of the shooting. Not retired or vets.
This was reported directly from the principal of the school.

Semi automatic weapons sales must be banned in the USA. Anything less is bullshit. The shooter was 19 and had no criminal record, like most of the rest. A back ground check wouldn't have stopped a legal sale of the gun. What would stop it, or make the injury and death count lower would be the removal of semi automatic weapons.

I just think that America has gone total bi-polar. Each side thinks they are right, the other side is wrong, and each will fight to the death to prove it. Innocents be damned. Absolutely no compromise anywhere. If the murder of kindergarden kids in their own classroom at Sandy Hook didnt change the laws, i am absolutely terrified to imagine the catastrophic event that eventually will.
