I also have been warned not to go into certain towns because of bad areas when visiting Cali. I had no problem going into Newark, East Orange, or Irvington NJ during the day (or driving through their main roads at night), so I can't understand a place worse than them. Maybe people are wimps out there.

If you like earthquakes, mudslides, wildfires, and drive by shootings you can have Cali...and the 3 strikes law is ridiculous. A person can get sent to jail for life (the taxpayers paying for it) for stealing a slice of pizza.

I've lived here for 6 years and have felt an earthquake maybe 4 times. Only once was it more than a little rumble and even then was kinda like driving on a slightly bumpy road. Nobody was hurt.

Yes, there are things like mudslides and wild fires but every place has natural disasters. Like I mentioned, you have very deadly and unpredictably weather out there.

I like the varied terrain... I can ride from the rocky beach roads, to the mountains, into the desert, through the forest, through countryside... Florida is quite flat. No stunning mountain vistas. Nobody goes skiing and surfing the same day in Florida. Nobody goes mountain climbing and whitewater rafting in Florida. Look, I love Miami and Key West...but California just has more.

(and as far as drive-by shootings, that happened in the 70s. Wasn't there some crazy serial killer in Florida that was dropping cinderblocks on cars driving under bridges? I mean.. honesty.)

In Florida,especially in the summer, it's hotter than Satan's balls.The humidity is incredibly oppressive.Also, then you have the bugs that you need a .38 to kill..

If you venture more than 3 miles west of I-95 ,you're dealing with crazed rednecks.No thanks.Miami is only slightly better, but no one speaks a fucking word of English.That can get a little tiresome.But at least you can get laid in South Beach..

California is no bargain either.Outside of San Diego and a few places up north, that state state is a shithole too..

I'd say the hell with both of them and move to Portland Oregon..

Eeek, Portland? Under so much cloud cover and rain? I went there for a week back in January...The only thing I enjoyed was a Cock-n-Balls doughnut from Voodoo Doughnuts, and even then, it was full of Bavarian creme which ruined it. I had a picture taken, but I can't post that.

Hey,you're in San Diego..It just doesn't get much better than that. Year round pleasant climate,great beaches and the desert not too far away.Also, you have tons of cute Navy and Marine guys flown in fresh daily..I loved that place!

Yeah, I forgot about the weather in Portland.I liked it there though.There were tons of bookstores all over the place and the bars were fun.I got used to the weather,and besides, while I was there it was the butthole of winter anyways and I just took it for granted it's supposed suck..It mostly rained and I'll take that over snow any day..

I grew up in the northeast and being where there is no humidity when it get very hot is brutal, you pray for some moisture in the air. Also Florida is less hot than the northeast in the summer. NY will sometimes reach 100, Florida normally won't.

Not really, it does feel like above 100 though inland, but you really don't want to be there much, unless you're one of the obvious non-Floridians that are stupid enough to go to the Orlando themeparks in the summer.

I have never been to Florida. I have heard that Wilton Manors is very gay friendly in Florida. I know that property taxes can get really high in Florida. I really don't like wet heat...it is one of the reasons why I would not want to live in Hawaii.

I find it funny that someone brought up Prop 8 in CA when only just a few weeks ago, Florida finally got rid of their anti adoption laws for GLBT people. Overall, Florida is a much more conservative state than California.


Comparing California to New York is probably a better comparison in some ways because they both have good things for different reasons.

Both have beaches, but in Cali the water is so cold all year long you can't go in unless you have a wetsuit.

Florida is cheaper you can get a nice house for a cheap price i saw one house a few months ago it was 95k rancher 3 bedrooms 2 baths 1 car garage it was beautiful. The apartments in fl are nice too granted cabinets hardwood floor etc

Prices of real estate have dropped quite a bit in California. You don't have to spend $500k unless you want to. Depends on the type of home you are looking for. There are some places that are under $200k now. It depends on what you want, the area you want to live in, etc. Gay people tend to flock to beautiful places. Beautiful places tend to be more costly to live in because the demand is higher. So the most gay friendly areas tend to cost more than other areas.

Umm, the reason California real estate/rent is so expensive is because of all you folks who want to move here. Supply and demand, fellas.

Berkeley native here, but I've lived in SoCal, visited Miami, Florida and many other parts of the country and California is as good as it gets in this country if you like urban living and are gay. The Bay Area is gorgeously green, great public transit, mulitcultural and plenty of high quality 420. It's incredibly easy to be gay here (and get laid), easy access to wine country, higher population of educated people...I could go on.

Drawbacks? It's too condensed and you can pretty much explore all there is to do here in a week or two. Nightlife is kinda blah. Also....people could care more about their appearance, but that's what trips to LA are for.

LA has great night life, there's TONS to do there, the parties are incredible, the people are fun to look at, you get more for your money as far as renting goes, multicultural, great museums and architecture...nowhere near as segragated as the east coast (class, race-wise). And Venice Beach on Sunday during the spring/summer is like heaven.

Drawbacks? You have to own a car....you just HAVE to. At times you can feel like you're living on a giant movie set. People can be incredibly superficial and plastic.


What does Florida have? Retirement lifestyle, Disney World (lol), great beaches and the most obnoxious people from NJ and NYC who go there to play. If you like rough trade, this place is a gold mine. Some really great restaurants in Miami, too.
