  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

For what are you willing to expend a great deal of money?

What kind of exotic plants did you have in mind

I mistyped; should be unique plants.

Heck a lot; I'm a plant lover (I once considered to be a botanist :D). The easiest one is the umbrella tree from Socotra Island, the rare type of pitcher plants, Welwitschia, cannonball tree, etc.

I've never found anything that I'm really willing to "splurge" on... but there are also very few places where I'm willing to skimp. My biggest expenses tend to be cumulative rather than whopping.

For example, I almost never buy clothes that aren't on sale, and I don't consider it a real sale until it's 50% off; however, I buy a lot of clothes, and I probably spend as much annually as someone who buys a few high-end pieces a year. And books and videos, I generally buy them used or discounted, but I always buy them: no library lending, no rentals, I have to own the things.

And then there's food. Cheap restaurants are OK, and I don't have any four-star restaurants near me, but I won't skimp on a good meal. Good food is worth any price. Perhaps generic or off-brand groceries are just as good as the glossier labels, but I don't believe it and am hesitant to find out.

And I'm pretty sure that if I had more money, I would spend larger sums on all these things. I would definitely splash out on an incredibly expensive car if it was beautiful and interesting... not a new Bentley of course (fugly things they are) but a vintage Rolls or Mercedes. It's just a matter of scale, if I made ten times as much a year, I don't see why I shouldn't have a car that cost ten times as much.

A home and a plane.

 Do you have one, or seriously intend to get one at some point? And, you're talking about one of those small ones, right? Like, 4 seats or something?

Health and Happiness

For all the people who've said this, when you mention health, do you mean you'll pay for a club membership and a personal trainer, or what?

I absolutely love animals I wouldn't mind crapping out all the money in the world to expand my future house to include: a fish aquarium room with enough tanks to collectively hold 1000 gallons of water, an African Grey parrot with all the accessories it needs ($5K +), a cat with whatever it needs, and so on... I dream to be a vet before I get them so that I can take proper care of them....

That's pretty cool.

This is gonna be heavily stereotypical! I must have a good brand of hot sauce - store brand doesn't cut it.

LOL! So, which brand do you have to have? Will regular Tabasco do(though you can get it in the store), or are you like my roommate, who has to have that kind with the rooster on the bottle? Then again, you're in the south (there's some stereotyping right back atcha lol), so there are probably as many brands and varieties of hot sauce to choose from as there are cheeses.

Thanks to everyone who's answered so far. I've really enjoyed reading these.

State of the art stereo system.

Yes, that and also if anyone in my family got some horrible illness, spending all my money for getting well would be automatic.

Interesting topic, It's been fun reading what other people justify spending a good sum of money on.

I'm one of those practical boring guys, I don't spend a lot of money except on two things, education and cars. Car spending is something I am working on because I can justify some expensive things to get for my car. (expensive for a broke college student) and I should be saving not spending currently :( If I have some part I need I will not spend a dime until I save enough to get it. #-o

About the whole buying an expensive car, I feel it depends on where you live. For instance in Chicago most people don't own a car, pretty similar in New York I would imagine. So spending a bunch of cash on a car doesn't really make sense. In Michigan all the roads are straight, and boring. A Chevy Malibu will serve you much better then a Ferrari over there. Unless you are looking for status, which is actually the case most of the time. But for some people, (me included) a fair amount of time is spent in the car daily. So having the cash I can completely understand buying an expensive / nice car car. But most expensive cars are boring and I have no interest in them. ;)

The other thing is I think many people have not had any motorsport experiences. The car is an appliance nothing more, to them. Where if they tried out some local motorsport event, they might just fall in love with cars. It happened to me. But I am in SoCal, cars are everything over here.

Interesting topic though!
Later,

Food, I just love eating, lol.

I also tend to spend more than I need on the electronics I buy... I like shiny things :-)

I am one of those lucky enough not to have to make sacrifices in order to buy or do the things I want; though of course there is a limit to the financial excesses I can allow myself.

I am also one who believes that money can bring happiness; it can certainly improve your life and provide enjoyment in a multitude of ways. But obviously that depends how you cope with your life and you should be able to be happy even if you don't have a fortune to your name.

So with unlimited ressources what would I do? There are some things that don't interest me, cars for example. Others I find the price doesn't justify the purchase.

But I would spend a lot of money on the perfect home, travel and accomodation and in frequenting good restaurants.

Though I already spend a fortune on clothes I would probably spend even more.

Art work would have a high budget on my list but that goes with decorating my perfect home.

And just to show that I am not a selfish bitch I would like to do something to provide homes for the homeless; perhaps buying up old property, renovating it and then letting it out at extremely low rentals through a non-profit association. With unlimited wealth that should be possible.

I'd spend money on rocks... mineral specimens for my collection.

The rock in this attachment is mostly that, rock. But it does have some emerald on it.

The guy on ebay wants $12k for it. Not bad.

Value systems. Yay!

You mean Cock Sauce (Sriracha).

Ah, Yes! ...

The house in "North by Northwest". Probably my most favorite Hitchcock movie! ..|

But, it would only be "worth" it if I could fly all my friends to it! (It supposedly has it's own landing strip!) (!w!)

Keep smilin'!!(*8*)
Chaz ;)

I just bought "My" Kev a laptop for his birthday. Since I'm always "Hogging" the computer (I'll give you one guess what I'm constantly using it for ... ) I figured he would like it. (And, besides, we already have strong WiFi, but it wasn't being used.)

Could I "afford" it? Hell NO! (At least at THIS particular time!) So ... I had to put a "deep crease" in my "Plastic", which I prefer to keep "smooth"! #-o

Besides ... that's all just "air numbers", right?? :help:

But the REAL question is ... was it Worth it? Given the Smiles, and Hugs, and all that "other" Happy stuff ... Hell YES!! (!w!)

Though I may end up paying twice, or more, it's actual price, trying to pay it off "over time", it was still Worth every single "plastic" penny just for his reaction! (group)

(F*ck Money! I HATE it!! :grrr:)

Keep smilin'!!(*8*)
Chaz ;)

Home entertainment. It's reusable.

Excellent point. At some point in my life, god willing I'll be able to have both the music collection I've always wanted, and the stereo system worthy of it.

I use to have a $300 a month tea habbit. Be happy you never got one.

I am seriously curious as to what kind of tea one would buy, and how much of it would one have to drink on a daily basis, to sip their way through $300 worth in a month's time?

Don't get me wrong, I love tea, but this is a whole new realm of possibility for me! Unless this is another one of those moments where someone was making a joke and I didn't get it. lol

I was hoping you'd post in here, and I knew what you'd say! :-)

An island...a house or land in general. It's a good investment.

And they ain't makin' any more of it. I used to fantasize about buying large tracts of land, and long-abandoned buildings in poor neighborhoods, and build less-population-dense yet safe and affordable housing with some, but most would be parks and nature reserves.

You mean Cock Sauce (Sriracha).

*snort*

Yes. That's what he called it. Sriracha, not Cock Sauce. lol

Five bucks for about 12 ounces! I priced it at the co-op tonight. And he can eat one of those a week! lol

An island. In particular, this one. I'm taking donations and poli sci people/lawyers to govern it and create a neat little utopia after the island becomes an independent nation.

...but no, really...a house or land in general. It's a good investment.

I had actually considered making an offer on that Island, but it isn't worth it. There are issues with the property that I will not go into. It isn't even worth $2.4mil US.

No I was not joking. I wish I was.

Long story short I stopped drinking soda. I started to drink more tea. I use to buy the stuff below, as well as iced tea while at bars, etc. I started out drinking regular amounts, but then it was pointed out to me by the people I worked with just how much I drank during work and when we would hang out together.

I use to buy the stuff below in cases. I would drink 3 or 4 gallons a day for about $3 a gallon. The rest of the money was spent on tea at the bar and other places I go. The bar I go too charges $2 a glass and it was not uncommon for me to get $30 to $40 just in tea while I hung out for a few hours.

I know now I am a diabetic and was told that was a big reason why I drink so much. I am down to about 2 gallons a day, but I am lucky that I don’t usually pay anything for it now. The mini mart down the street usually gives me free tea if I bring my own glass - so I do.

Looking back it is funny. Thinking about all the money I spent on tea makes me want to cry though. Most people don’t believe me, but it is true. I only tell the story because I find it so funny.

Anyways, hope the same never happens to you.

I never over indulge. I feel like an ass if I spend too much money. I HATE shopping and I hate malls. I am happiest when I am giving a loved one something that they need. I could go a whole month without just for that.

That said, my indulge-vice is to travel.

MUCH prefer to spend the money of my loved ones, and also supporting my local food bank; they really help a lot of local folks who are struggling.

I have a great partner, snug, comfortable home, and really don't like to splurge. I always feel guilty later.

Since I travel for a living, I like to go to Wegman's and buy some extra-special treats to cook up.
