Re: Could Fred Phelps had been the noblest man on Earth?

Well, small or not, he did sway a lot of people away from the larger forces that are against us.

That's because they couldn't distance themselves sufficiently -- there just wasn't enough maneuvering room when he claimed to be representing the Bible which both the Mormons and Catholics claim to use. So those who resented his noise automatically resented them, and all their efforts at trying to look reasonable appeared like trying to cover their real motives... which were the same as his.

Cosignin your man just like a bitch ass bitch. smh.

anywho, as far as conspiracy theories go, I've heard them all, Illuminati, 9/11, Kennedy's assassination, the existence of "Michael Jackson", but this is by far the stupidest.

Re: Could Fred Phelps had been the noblest man on Earth?

I need to be clear. I'm not claiming this as fact. It's just a thought experiment. I just think there's too much of a coincidence to completely dismiss this idea. Occurred to me last year when the news of FP's death came to me.

Trust me. His own family would have known this.

And they know that for all these years he has had a loathing of homos that he turned into a crusade.

I think that your theory is nuts when you look at the facts.

The guy and his family really hates fags. Those in the family who have fled the Westboro Baptist Church have made this clear.

Don't romanticize this monster.

Re: Could Fred Phelps had been the noblest man on Earth?

You make a very good point. I pondered about this very question for months.

I tried to imagine myself going through something like what I proposed to see how I would/could pull it off. My conclusion was the only way for me to pull this off was if only a select few in my family would know the true motive and would go along with it while the rest, including the children, would have to be brainwashed. Then I looked at the Phelps family. I think if this was the case then Shirley would probably be the only one at this point to know the truth.

In other words, he sacrificed himself and his family.

Again, remember that even though most people like to pit a face on the hate crowd, and the Phelps seem to make the most sense, the various mega churches like Mormon and Pat Robertson's church have done way way more damage to us with their tens/hundreds of millions of dollars and political correctness than the Phelps family ever did.

I really, really doubt if Fred Phelps was doing this for the greater good, he would sacrifice his family, especially the children. If he was doing this for the better that means he has a heart and cared in some way. That obviously means he would care about his family and he wouldn't sacrifice his them, especially children and purposely outcast from the rest of the world. It just doesn't make any sense.

My guess is no.

Re: Could Fred Phelps had been the noblest man on Earth?

Fred Phelps was just a vile old bastard...may he rot in Hell.

Re: Could Fred Phelps had been the noblest man on Earth?

Haha if you guys have such disgusted reaction to him, them perhaps my theory might not be so far fetch after all.

Remember that the Mormon church with its tens of millions of dollars in anti gay but politically correct propaganda has done more damage to our cause than FP ever did.

And yet, BOTH of them are now failing. So again, hardly.

May be from his perspective sacrificing his family for a greater cause was just? I'm thinking of Lot and how he offered his daughters up to be gang raped to save a couple of strangers.

Re: Could Fred Phelps had been the noblest man on Earth?

^ I don't understand why you want to believe this fantasy about Phelps.

I think that considering everything is good but in this case...his best gift was reminding everyone that he is a horrible example...and he served as a mirror for those people who had the same thoughts as he did. Most actual monsters don't even know they are monsters....mirrors help change all that..

if this was his plan...very cool...but I doubt it.

Like I said, if he was doing it for some kind of good it means he cared in some way which would mean he would care about what happened to his children. The children didn't need to be sacrificed, he could have completely excluded his family and find other nut jobs to do this very same thing without making his family hated just to make a point.

I don't understand why you want to believe this was some sort of clever scheme. No one actually needs to do this to show how awful prejudice/racist/homophobic/sexist, etc people are. There has been plenty of progress for civil rights before his family existed and there will be plenty more when they're long gone.

Re: Could Fred Phelps had been the noblest man on Earth?

I suspect this sort of idea arises from thinking, "Wouldn't it have been a wonderful plan?"

Sure, it would have been a wonderful plan -- but that doesn't mean it was one.

Re: Could Fred Phelps had been the noblest man on Earth?

Where is the nobility in picketing the funeral of a young soldier who was killed in service to his country and proclaiming his death to be the result of a government which allows 'fags' in the military? Where is the nobility in suing the grieving father who tried to prevent the protest? Where is the nobility in the so-called Christian Fred Phelps winning the case and, on top of being granted a sizeable chunk of money, but also being granted his attorney fees when he and his wife were the attorneys?

Tell me, where is the nobility?

Well, about a year ago when this possibility occurred to me, I wanted to doubt it, too. But the more I dug into his involvement with the civil right movement, the more sense it made to me that he decided to sacrifice everything to sway as many people as he could our way by showing what a monster's face looked like.

Again, remember that there have been much larger forces at work against us. These forces have been very politically correct, which is why they've been so successful with the public at large. Don't forget that almost all cases of marriage equality this far have been won through the courts. Referendum votes still work against us.

If Phelps really was the monster he appeared to be, then he unintentionally sent a lot of people our way. If my theory is right about him, then he really did send a lot of people our way. Regardless of if it was intentional or not, he sent a lot of people our way. I dare say public opinion would still be overwhelmingly against us had Phelps not show them what a monster face looked like.
