You written about the gravity of knowing the difference, but considering the mass of evidence accumulated, and that in Physics, weight W is defined as W = mg, where m is the mass, and g the acceleration of a body due to gravitational pull of the earth, then weight is a force, technically, see the newtonian description, F=ma.

It is not my fault that "weight" and "force" were sloppily picked up by scientists from common, sloppy usage, to also refer to their technical, well-definite conceptions :rolleyes:
