Why should they be replaced by new ones? The reasons we had for believing in gods in the past have largely vanished. We know why the Sun comes up in the morning and sets in the evening, we know why volcanoes work, where mountains came from, how babies are conceived and how we and other life evolved. It is no longer valid to say of the things we do not yet understand "God did it", because for all the times we said that before, someone discovered that it had nothing to do with god, it was geology or cosmology or biology, physics or chemistry or a bit of each.
The sad irony is we have the various faiths using and abusing the products of godless science and technology to propagate their bullshit to a large, uneducated and gullible audience who can be fleeced for money, power, influence and all too often persuaded to do despicable things in the name of their god.

Because it is Human nature to believe in something greater than ourselves and quite often we escalate those beliefs to the true believer level. There have been a few psychological studies that have shown this. Johaninsc's example from below is example of it. How UFO mythology has come to replace religion for many people. Its why some atheists become as I call it evangelical and pursue lawsuits against grieving mother's over a harmless roadside cross, they have taken their belief in the separation of church and state to the dogma level. If all religion ceases to exist, people will fill its place with something else and pursue it just as radically. UFOs, conservatism, liberalism, communism, atheism, environmentalism, conspiracy theory, etc. all are non-religious fields that have developed radical true believers that take it to the extreme. Pretty much anything that can be believed in can be made into a substitute for religion.

So I state it again, Old Gods die when they are replaced by new Gods, the new Gods don't have to be a religion it could be anything that involves belief and faith raised to the dogma level. And the belief in new Gods is often radical, energetic and destructive. I'd much rather live the old settled Gods than new fired up ones.
