Gay activists are missing the cultural point

Well I'm not blaming you for anything so you can relax now. There must be better things for you to be doing than attacking other gays. My beef is with the big gay orgs.

What do you think that organizations should do for you? And have you joined and tried to help? Done something?

Yeah. I wanna study astrophysics at Caltech, like that's ever going to happen $$$.

My best friend just got his doctorate there and is working at JPL now. You gotta move to Pasadena for that.

My beef is with the big gay orgs.

Well see here I'm not really sure I can agree. The big orgs are pushing for the big things, like the laws to be changed. What do you expect a big gay org to do for your family/friends?

Absent any relevance to them (like knowing you are gay) they are going to be like GTFO. They aren't going to care in the slightest about anything some gay org has to say.

I think its great that at 19 he is thinking about the community he lives in and how it can change for the better. At his age I was pretty clueless. I was sneeking around going to gay places and considered it normal. But Magnetar, I live in what you consider the enlightened North. Although things are better up here they are far from perfect. Gays in Wash, DC get bashed and murdered just for holding hands.

Running away normally solves nothing. "Where ever you go, there you are." I remember thinking of running away from home when my mother discovered a gay magazine in my room and basically tried to beat the gayness out of me. I went to the gay part of town and essentially what I found was that at 16 I might as well have come with fries and a soda because guys only saw chicken. So I knew I would have to go back home and hold my nose until I went to college. Again, that is life in the North.

As for Caltech, if you are serious and have the grades you can probably get grants if not a scholarship. I bet there are gay orgs that give scholarships and if not there are gay alumni who can help.

Completely agree. I hadn't even really come out to myself yet at 19.

As they say, "If you want to try going up the river without a paddle, don't blame the river for making it difficult."

They need to be talked to and they need to be able to see that we are normal and everywhere. No single individual can do that. It takes organization.

I'll have to kinda disagree with this. I think people are more likely to respond to individuals they know rather than organizations.

Like, it wasn't the HRC that convinced Cheney to support gay marriage. It was his daughter.

People are statistically more likely to support gay rights if they know a gay person. I doubt the same statistic is true for people who have heard a speech by a gay organization.

>>>Bad analogy.

Nope, good analogy. The easy thing would be to move to a place that's less homophobic. You've chosen to stay in a homophobic environment and (hopefully) make it better. That's the river you'll be paddling up. I wish you well, but don't be surprised to find it rough going.

Lex

Cultural change(s)? Don't forget to include gays with disabilities, who are obese, who have medical needs, etc., too.

No, it's a bad analogy because you are accusing me of "blaming" my opposition when I am not.
Lex never accused you of anything. He just said, metaphorically speaking, you are going against the tide in your town. And that is true.

I think people are inherently good and need to see the issue the right way.
And that's great that you have such high ideals. In general I like to think that as well. But not everyone is going to eventually be educated. For a lot of people, they will go to their graves believing they will see Jesus for what in their minds is "standing up to sexual immorality" and nothing you say will change their minds. Some might, but not everyone. Hopefully at least people that know you will accept you, but it doesn't always happen with overly religious people.
