The OP said gays shouldn't be haters just like the ReligioPublicans.
You guys are arguing that it's okay. But that's playing into the enemy's hands. It's even been suggested that being haters is how to win.
All the people who would be convinced that way have been. Now it's time to show the middle that we're better than the enemy. That means act better.
You say don't -- go ahead, be rude and insulting and crude. But that just makes us haters, and as has been pointed out, people don't vote for haters -- in this case, they're people who will vote Republican, because gays would just be confirming all the accusations.

Ok, BostonPirate, please explain to me how your tactics will help bring about change for the gay community? What have the black panthers done for the black race? What have the KKK done for the white race? What you are suggesting sounds in line like what they stood for. Haters don't help the movement. I'm not trying to tell people we should all be complicit little angels and let people usurp our rights, but I just don't see any way how hate brings rights.
MLK was inarguably the most influential leader of the civil rights movement. What was his approach? Non-violent protest. His politics were liberal, but his approach to get there was through peaceful protest. The same cannot be said for the legacy of the Black Panthers or the KKK. They were and are impotent at best. Why? Because hate destroys one's credibility. You can do as you like, but I believe we need more gays to say you can hate me if you like, but I'm still an American. I still love this country and I still love you, even though you may hate me. I'm going to fight for my rights because I believe in the words of our creed, that "all men are created equal." I will fight relentlessly for my rights and you may oppose me, but I will continue to love you regardless.
That may sound ridiculous, but I believe it's what we are called to do it we want to move forward.
It's even hard for me to not make a remark about rude Yankees on this forum, so I understand how hard it is to be peaceful toward those who truly oppose us. But if I didn't know in my heart that I'm right on this issue I wouldn't even bring it up.

I will tell you how they already HAVE made a difference
In the eighties we formed a group called act up. we engaged in acts of civil disobedience, and because we did, the nations newspapers began reporting on the aids crisis and the fact that the nation was not funding research.
Things changed when we started hitting the pages of life magazine.
Then we set our sights on gay marriage, and we camped outside the capital house, rallied the politicians, we stood out and told them what would happen if they did not give us equal protection under the law and marriage. we campaigned against a few and won, reminding the others that they could be next and that the public was on our side. We took it to the courts and we beat Mitt Romney.
we earned the right to marry
for me its not a theory. I KNOW what works and what doesn't.
