This phenomena isn't unique to the Netherlands though. In the last two years ive increasingly had to defend myself, always against young muslim men. And after my last fight midsummer, i traded my flipflops for boots and started carrying a knife and let it stick out of my backpocket, and i have to say, since then, i haven't had any homophobic remarks, people hardly even stare anymore. It's hardly the ideal solution though, having to look meaner and be armed.

Nonsense. Ever heard the expression "Christmas Christians?" They are mocked by the fundamentalists as being the sort of believer who only shows up at church for the big holidays. I work with and went to school with "Eid Muslims" who only make an appearance in a mosque for the holidays.

THAT's my kind of religion! There are moderate Muslims, and it doesn't help to pretend otherwise.

Compared to most cities, it's still pretty good. Compared to what it was like ten years ago, it's pretty aweful.

While for some reason Turks and Moroccans are always mentioned here in one breath, but it's mainly the North-Africans who cause disproportionate mayhem, and it's not just in the 'big' Dutch cities either.

It's funny you should mention this. The wiki link and the Muslim women's group from the UK link were both found after quite literally 5 seconds worth of research, a simple google search.

In this day and age of information, the choice to remain ignorant is a willful choice.

The plain fact of the matter is, any religion that subscribes to the view that homosexuality is a sin, is my enemy. Anyone thats part of any such religion, is also an enemy by association.

The fact that there are moderate muslims out there who don't care that im gay so long as i confine all my gay stuff to behind closed doors... well guess what, i dont give a fuck. We were here first, we are part of the reason civil rights have advanced this much and made this country what is it, and made this country so attractive for them to move here in the first place.

I dont really care what the quran says specifically. And they dont either. For them, homosexuality is a sin, and thats enough for them to do whatever the hell they feel like doing about it.

Considering we have such a hard time with the christians in this country, you'd think we'd be even less welcoming with immigrants with less tolerant religious views on gay rights.

one odd point - the ONLY time the Bush Admin and Iran agreed at the UN was to deny human rights recognition for gays and lesbians. fundamentalist muslims and christians seemed to agree to hate.

This is what happens when people political correctness and religious tolerance go to far. Islam will never be compatible with Western civilization so all of you spineless PC liberals can stop pretending. In theory, multiculturalism and diversity are good things but when governments bend over backwards to avoid being called racist or xenophobic, this encourages extreme ideologies disguised as religion to spread. All religions are not equal. Islam is homophobic and misogynistic. Unlike Christianity, there have been no moderate reformations of Islam. I'm an atheist but I will take a country of right wing Christians over Muslims any day.

Disagree,the only difference is that here the states can't carry out executions solely because you're gay and lesbian. But I go to the Amendment One bill passed in NC a couple of weeks ago. If you listen to some of the "Christians" that were in support of the bill and the ones that have come out of the woodworks since OBama's announcement,there is doubt they want us dead.
In the meantime,they will settle for making life so unbearable for LGBT people (especially youth) that it will drive them to commit suicide. They are just as bad IMO.
