I was going to open a thread on this subject but saw one already open so I'll post it here. I'm an american living in one of those small provinces the senators toured, so I can give you first hand evidence of what happened at those meetings. It was lead by the president of the general law committee, Liliana Negre de Alonso, senator of the Province of San Luis (that's where I live) .
The following is the note I was going to post in a new thread.
The same sex marriage law in Argentina was approved by the lower house of congress and is currently in a senate committee, who is holding town hall debates in every province. The senator who presides this committee is Senator Liliana Negre de Alonso, representing the Province of San Luis (see footnote at end of this note). All the deputies in the lower house that represent this same province voted against the same sex marriage law and this senator has publically expressed that she is against this law. She is also presiding the town hall debates and prior to the debates she is meeting privately with the Roman Catholic and evangelical authorities in these provinces as well as participating in marches against this law. She has shown her bias without any reproach what so ever, including limiting LGBT groups, the time necessary to express their views at these debates. She has stated publicly that homosexuality is a disease and is curable, that the “porteños” (referring to people from Buenos Aires Capital) want Argentina to be the gay capital of the world, that homosexuality harbors pedophiles, etc. Several provincial governors have expressed their negativity against the same sex marriage law, ordering the senators representing those provinces to vote against the law. The governor of San Juan ordered the Ministry of Education to not count the absences of school children on the day of the marches against the law so that the kids can participate in them. As things stand, it is highly probable that the same sex marriage law will not be approved by the senate.
Footnote: San Luis is one of the smallest provinces in the country yet one of the wealthiest with zero debt, home to the long ruling brothers, Rodriguez Saa, including former President and current senator Adolfo Rodriguez Saa. This family has ruled the province since Argentina’s return to democracy and every single legislator that represent this province in Argentina’s national congress, except one (has expressed he will vote in favor of the same sex marriage law), responds personally to this family. San Luis has always gone against the current in regards to the national government policies (regardless of the ruling party), expressing in several occasions it’s desire to secede from the rest of the country. Current governor, Alberto Rodriguez Saa has presented a projected law in the provincial congress, declaring that free internet be a human right. Oddly enough, Adolfo has not expressed publically how he will vote on the same sex marriage law. He has expressed his desire that a consensus be reached between both houses of congress with a law that should reach a unanimous vote………Don Adolfo has a gay son.
Personal note: I tried to write this entry as objectively as possible but found it very difficult, and what motivated me in writing this was a conversation with a friend that lives in the capital city of San Luis (I live in a rural area of the province of San Luis, at a distance of 200 km from the capital city). The province of San Luis has a very large gay community, a very large percentage is closeted (myself included) and the few out gays are very out. My personal view on marriage is that it is not for me but that it should be for anyone who wants to marry. I thought my view was a bit radical and was afraid of what my friend would say when I expressed my view that marriage should be for everyone regardless of sex even though I personally didn’t believe in marriage. BTW….my friend has a profile on most gay dating (translation: trolling for sex) sites, but says that he is not gay but is curious (yeah, I know). To my surprise, my friend states that gays should not be allowed to marry, much less be able to adopt children. I thought his view to be one of very few and started to poll my other “gay” friends and was more surprised and upset to find that they also shared his views.
Latest: What will be debated in the senate this coming thursday will be several alternative civil union laws, even though the President has stated that she wants the "Marriage" law approved by the senate in it's original lower house form. The Roman Catholic church is accusing the government of using threats and extortion against the senators that have expressed their disapproval of the "Gay marriage" law. The president left the country last night on a trip to china and invited several senators that have expressed their disapproval of the law to join her on this trip..........she's taking them away from this crucial vote, tipping the balance in favor of the "Gay Marriage" law. The law now has a good chance of passing!!!!! ¡¡¡¡VIVA ARGENTINA!!!!
I was going to post this note last week, but the "free" internet service in this province wasn't working!!!! Ironic??? I'm posting this using an alternative (expensive) broad band service.
