Gay Hawaiian Rep Talks Civil Unions

http://www.advocate.com/News/Daily_News/2010/05/03/Gay_Hawaiian_Representative_Talks_Civil_Unions/

Oshiro reportedly does not typically talk about his sexual orientation, but he said he felt it was important due to the 31-20 vote, which passed the bill.

"It was really heartwarming to me, to know that at the end of the day people are willing to do what they need to do, do what they came here to do, and not just worry about keeping their jobs," he said in the report.

Oshiro will face Gary Okino, a conservative Honolulu city council member, when he runs for reelection in the fall.

That's going to change in Rhode Island.

I kind of hope Lincoln Chafee gets into the governor's office as an Independent - I believe it could make him the first non-Democratic governor to sign a gay marriage bill into law.

Also, Tim Pawlenty is retiring in Minnesota, but I have no idea what might happen to that seat.

The governor of Connecticut, Jodi Rell, is a Republican. She supported Civil Unions , but was against Same Sex Marriage. The Ct Supreme Court upheld same sex couples right to marry in 2008 and in 2009 Rell signed the genderless marriage bill guaranteeing marriage equality for everyone. Later this year, October I think, all civil unions will also automatically become legal marriages. I also believe that same sex marriages performed in other states will be recognized if the couples move to Ct.

scream4ever, what happened to Rybak? He's now out of the race. O_o

Do you think Dayton will win the DFL nomination?

Rybak is out, but the good news is that Eamer won the Republican nomination. He's generally seen as more extreme and less likely to win. Polls show that Dayton is more likely to win against him then Kelliher, so he's got my vote at the primaries.

At the DFL convention held in Duluth all candidates supported same sex marriage!

Okay, I normally really value your insights, yada yada, but I have to ask:

you HAVE been living in the United States, right!?

Yes, and following the news and everything -- but I can't even recall the last time I heard someone plainly say they want religious marriage to be the only marriage there is, and don't want any such thing as civil marriage!

Well that's different. On the question of trying to enshrine religious institutions, I've seen that a few times.

No kidding.

I could be amused by the looks of consternation when I tell fellow Christians that they're going against what Jesus taught, by that agenda, if it wasn't so tragic.

Do all of those states have the highest population of Mormon?

If this advances, SCOTUS will have the option of picking up the Ninth Circuit Prop 8 case and bundling them. I really think that's what this is about: get several cases advancing in several circuits, and SCOTUS will almost have to pick it up -- especially if the circuits disagree.

And besides, what's the difference between a constitutional amendment against marriage equality and a statute? Either way, there's no marriage equality.

Are you kidding? There's a huge difference. A statute could be declared unconstitutional by the courts. An amendment cannot since it is constitutional by definition.

Regardless, I don't think an amendment is in the cards. The Repubs will not pick up enough seats in Congress to make that a possibility before public opinion changes enough to make it impossible.

Are you being intentionally dense? We're talking about the after-effect of a Federal court challenge and you're concerned with what might happen in a state court???

oh wait, were you talking about a state Constitutional amendment?

If so my bad, I was thinking you were talking about the federal one.

Busy day in California:

The California Legislature passed a resolution calling on the federal Food and Drug Administration to overturn its policy banning healthy gay and bisexual men from donating blood! Not only is our state opposing discrimination, it is also standing up for the lives that can be saved.

Other Progress Today:

-The Unemployment Benefits Equality bill passed the legislature and is on its way to the Governor. It ensures that same-sex couples who are about to register as domestic partners get access to the same unemployment benefits as opposite-sex partners: http:********/bb2m8H

-The Civil Marriage Religious Freedom Act passed the legislature but needs a second vote from each house, due to potential conflicts with another bill. This bill clarifies that churches are not required to solemnize marriages that go against their faith. It takes away our opponents' argument that allowing same-sex couples to wed would harm religious freedom: http:********/ao168v

-The LGBT Prisoner Safety Act, which would require sexual orientation and gender identity to be considered in prison housing and classification decisions, passed the Senate and goes back to the Assembly now for one more vote: http:********/dx4AkA

-The Hate Crimes Protection Act, which would prevent anyone from forcing you to sign contracts waiving your rights under California's hate crimes laws, passed the Senate and goes back to the Assembly now for one more vote: http:********/aXhsHC

That's a huge negative of having so many states. The movement is so fractured because there are just way too many states to do something for most people.
