Throw out the word "marriage" from federal law and replace it with "registered union", specifying that the state cannot tell churches what to do and churches are not to tell the state what to do.

nah....we should keep the word marriage and tell the various religions that their book talks about matrimony, not marriage. That marriage has always been a civil issue.

the bible "says" nothing about marriage - what the bible is "talking about" is the rite of holy matrimony and that is not a right, but a religious concept. It is a rite of passage like birth, puberty ceremonies, betrothal, matrimony and death.

Marriage is a legal concept and always has been. It's about property rights, dowries, bride price, where families will live, who gets what land or goats. Marriage has never been about religion and matrimony is not marriage.

marriage in America is still a civil contract courts ruled since 1971 that religious wedding ceremonies do NOT confer any of the 1138 federal & state rights of marriage

N.C. House puts amendment to ban gay marriage on May ballot

- An amendment to place state control of marriage into the N.C. Constitution passed the N.C. House 75-42 on Monday evening.

The proposal is intended to prevent gay couples from receiving state-sanctioned marriage under North Carolina laws.

State law already limits state-sanctioned marriage to heterosexual couples. Supporters of the amendment say it's needed because other states are starting to recognize same-sex marriage, and because a judge or court in North Carolina could overturn North Carolina's law.

Opponents of the amendment call it discriminatory and say it would deny gay couples the rights held by heterosexuals.

State judges can overturn state law on the basis of the U.S. Constitution. I don't think it's common, but it's been done.

So this won't prevent state judges from overturning it.
