Gay Mecca cities of the world

With such a funky name it has to be a gay mecca.

"Hey, where are you?"
"I'm currently partying in Guadalalalajaja!"
":D/"

A gay man is running for mayor there, I'm not sure if the elections took place already, but if he wins he'll be the first openly gay politician in Mexico to win an election.

I was told that Puerta Vallarta was the "gay Mecca" of Mexico.

Nothing wrong with Guadalajara, though..... :-)

I was told Puerto Vallarta is where a lot of the gay tourists go. For Guadalajara I was told the following by someone who lived there:

"Gay Scene in Guadalajara is HUGE... it's been thriving since decades ago and keeps going strong. Back in the 90's the government closed all the gay bars, always in some administrative fault, but they managed to reopen again bigger and stronger.

Guadalajara has now it's own Pride Parade in June and at any given time, there's somewhere between 15 to 20 gay bars open in the city for all the different tastes. There's bathhouses, bars, clubs, etc. The most famous is the HUGE Monica's that can host up to maybe 5,000 people and opened in 1980. There's also Angel's and Circus. Usually, clubs start getting busy around 11 and some of them close at 2. Then people goes to Monica's that closes at 5 or 6, and if you still have the party bug, go back to Angel's that opens again as an afterhours until 10AM.

Once in GDL, try to find "La Guia Rosa" (The Pink Guide) or "Zona Gay" (Gay Zone duh!), the local magazines with info about the latest bar-openings and events.

So as you can see, the gay night life is quite open and fun in Guadalajara. Yes you may not be able to hug and kiss in the open daylight without causing a stir, at the end is a very "conservative" society, and just make sure who do you associate yourself with and you'll be safe. I bet you can have lots of fun and make some new friends over there."

Does that mean that some gang would create a new Mexican meat dish?

TREHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

ahaha just joking around

Sydney is pretty much the gay capital of the southern hemisphere. So put that in your back pocket.

Interesting that nobody's mentioned New York City yet. From Pride New York:

I wouldn't consider Denver to be a world-class gay mecca in the same category as San Francisco or Sydney, but it's not a bad place to live if you're gay:

I heard the one in Ohio is Columbus, not Cleveland.

In Europe, the "gay cities" cater mostly to very old men. The places with the highest concentration of gay men or doubtlessly the Vatican, Lourdes, Santiago de Compostela, Fatima, Cestochowa and Medjugorje.

But in ever more countries of Europe, gays can now just stay in their native village.

And having travelled to both places, I can confirm Antwerp(en), Belgium is the new Amsterdam, Netherlands. Amsterdam is infested with intolerant muslim fanatics, Antwerp is still catholic and jewish, and a very liberal version of both religions.

But what does Guadalajara have that the rest of Mexico doesn't?

I'm not quite sure, someone who lives there said that they have a lot of gay bars 15-20, bathhouses, clubs and gay pride parades (held in June). There's also a saying about men in Guadalajara it goes like this "you're either a soccer player, mariachi or a queer". Though Mexico City is much more developed and larger city, don't know why it didn't become the gay mecca.

I would say Mecca.

I suppose if you're Moslem, you could try to find guys to mess around with on the DL while you're both on hajj, but since non-Moslems aren't allowed in Mecca at all, I would dare to say that its appeal is somewhat limited!

The already mentioned Bangkok is awesome.

It is a very tolerant city outside of any specific area.
