Glee targets gay bullying

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOOLICLBFaw&feature=player_embedded"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOOLICLBFaw&feature=player_embedded[/ame]

Newest episode just got a whole lot more deeper. This episode has been described as 'gay' themed and will central on Kurt. For those who don't know, Kurt is an openly gay character on the show who's father supports him but is constantly bullied at school.

Ryan Murphy said he wanted to address the gay suicide issue, and its believed that this is it. Jane Lynch said that Kurt's life will be threatened within the episode, furthering the hint of the gay suicide idea.

Hopefully Glee will hit the right notes with this episode, just like the trailer seems to imply.

Another new promo. It`s quite intense so be prepared before you click it.

"Entertainment Weekly" Says "Glee"'s Chris Colfer is "Unequivocally ... the heart of the series"

EW notes that Kurt has become something much more important and significant as well:

Kurt has unequivocally become the heart of the series and, amid a recent flare-up in gay-teen bullying and suicides across the country, one of the most socially important characters on television. Says Colfer: "With all due respect to my castmates, they don't get the letters I get -- the letters that not only say 'I'm your biggest fan' but also 'Kurt saved my life' and 'Kurt doesn't make me feel alone' from 7-year-olds in Nebraska. When I was growing up, there wasn't a character like this. I think what makes Kurt so special is he's finding himself in front of our eyes.

Despite the ongoing anti-gay bullying and still too common suicides of gay youth, the fact that a character like Kurt even exists now shows how much gay visibility has progressed. After all, bullying and suicides are nothing new; the existence of a character like Kurt is groundbreaking.

Colfer also addresses what his own high school experience was like, referring to himself as an exotic animal. Says Colfer:

The best way I can describe myself in high school was that I was kind of like a social llama. Like where does the llama go? A llama's not a cow. It's not a horse. It might hang out with the duck once in a while, but it really has no place to belong. I was a social llama. But I didn't spit on things.

As for what he went through to get where he is now, Colfer says:

Had you told me when I was walking down the halls being picked on and harassed, in a matter of four years, I'd be put in a position where the character I'd be playing on TV would be inspiring so many people in that same situation, it would have been mind-blowing. Everything happens for a reason, so maybe it was good I went through all of that because now it all comes from a personal place.

Re: Glee targets gay bullying

Very cool!

This may have to be the first episode of Glee I watch!

Re: Glee targets gay bullying

It shouldn't be the last. Great show!

So glad they are doing this. It looks like it's really going to be a roller coaster of an episode - with highs and lows.

Re: Glee targets gay bullying

I just can't get enough of this show! It just keeps getting better and better imo.

Can't wait for this episode.

Re: Glee targets gay bullying

*sigh* I love Glee, but I think it's doing too much. It's getting too preachy. And it seems like if they want something dramatic, they always go to Kurt's gay story. Even as a gay, I'm getting tired of it.

Re: Glee targets gay bullying

I guess it's good. Although the show was never written in the past to make people more comfortable with gay people. In fact, one of the episodes where Kurt was going to great lengths to hit on Finn kind of perpetuated that fear that gay people try to trick or will do anything to get straight men. I think the show is so unrealistic in the way that it's hyper-everything, so colorful, archetypal characters, etc., that it's hard to have a message told in the way you could with a more realistic show. I am trying to say that in the show each character is more a symbol for something rather than a fully fleshed out human being. I would draw an analogy to opera or something like that, but I don't know enough to make an analogy. But it's basically where each character sort of conveniently represents one idea rather than being a portrait of a human. I am trying to explain the show as I see it, not criticize it.

Re: Glee targets gay bullying

:( that's sad..

I hope they can pull it off, by that I mean raise awareness and not stereotype too much and cause more damage to this issue.

I like how will says 'of course its personal!' that seemed like good acting, lol.

Re: Glee targets gay bullying

I hope they let the Kurt stories die a little after this. He's had a couple episodes this season (already) centralized upon him. It's time to explore other characters, I feel.

Re: Glee targets gay bullying

I don't think the episode was written as a response to the gay suicides, as I'm pretty sure this would have been filmed before all that happened, but obviously doing an episode on homophobic bullying is going to seem more relevant considering.

Despite this trailer being really overdramatic, I can't wait for this episode. :)

Re: Glee targets gay bullying

At least one mainstream show is showing a supportive message for the gay community. Its good for younger children to see that bullying is really hurtful.
