Go, Go Power Rangers (the entire series on Netflix)

Little known MMPR facts:

Thuy Trang, the first Yellow Ranger, died in a car crash in 2001. (Insert "Asians/women can't drive" joke here).

The actors that played Jason, Zack & Trini were "sent to a peace conference" (aka shitcanned) because they demanded more money.

The original plan for Jason David Frank (Tommy) was for him to star in his own series, while a new actor would portray the White Ranger. Due to fan outrage, Tommy stayed on as the White Ranger, while the other actor was placed into the new show, which was retooled into V.R. Troopers.

Last year, David Yost (Billy) came out of the closet. He said that the crew would call him "faggot" and harrass him. The final straw was when the fans demanded Billy to become the Gold Zeo Ranger, and the writers gave the role to Austin St. John (Jason) instead. Yost quit and spent a few years trying to "pray the gay away". When that failed, Yost had a mental breakdown. Now David has gotten his life together and works behind the scenes.

Lord Zedd was BAD ASS (at least until Rita came back and they made him into a incompetent clown.)

He might have become comedic in Season 3, but I don't think "incompetent" is the right word because he and Rita got shit DONE in that season. Zedd alone destroyed the Green Ranger... that's about it.

Zedd and Rita together
destroyed the Thunderzords, which damaged the Rangers' original Power Coins; captured Ninjor for more than half the season and removed him from the equation; brainwashed Kat, which nearly killed Kimberly; and destroyed the NEW Power Coins that the Rangers got from Ninjor. Then Rita's father reversed time which basically was the end of the MMPRs, Alien Rangers notwithstanding, and Zedd and Rita had Rito and Goldar blow up the Command Center, which meant that the Rita and Zedd's alliance was the only time that the villains had actually won at the end of the season other than Divatox at the end of Turbo. And later on they blew up the entire ruling family of the Machine Empire.

Even though they were basically written like a sitcom taking place on the moon, they were actually more potent together than alone.

^^^You have a point, but it felt like a lot of it was just Rita & Zedd getting lucky. Most of what they did was fixed or negated by the Rangers, and it was all became moot after the end of "Rangers in Space"

//Astronema was awesome- like Lady Gaga meets Ming The Merciless

Yeah, but the villains are never allowed to win in the end, haha. If that were the case they probably would have stuck with Zedd. He WAS intimidating when he first came but anybody kind of loses his menace after fifty consecutive defeats and idle threats to get the Rangers next time. Zedd and Rita did show some actual initiative together - using Kat as a mole, for instance - in season three that might have worked if they didn't always have to lose in the end.

Astronema totally was Space Lady Gaga. Chick had new hair, new hair color and new outfit every other episode.

There were complaints from many that Lord Zedd was too dark for a kid's show..hence the reason he was toned down a bit.
As for David Yost..it's a shame what happened to him. Im glad he's better now.

They pretty much had to do that since the Ranger costumes and the monster costumes came from different Japanese series at that point. The Ranger vs. monster fights in seasons 2/3 were awful since they rarely had monster costumes in season 2, and even when they did in season 3, they were vanity costumes rather than stunt ones. So, without Ranger vs. monster stuff, they had to up the Ranger vs. Z-Putty/Tenga fights. I did like the Season 2 one had a lot more unmorphed fights... but that's really the main thing I like about Season 2 over the other MMPR seasons.

I was just reading about Dairanger being the source material for the 2nd/part of the 3rd seasons and why it wasn't used. One reason cited that the footage was "too violent" but the major one was MMPR's unexpected success. Having the rangers change costumes would have hurt their popularity big time. Luckily the white ranger's costume didn't look too drastically different with Zyurangers. Like already mentioned, the editing of the fighting scenes were really frantic to cover up the splicing of two different shows. In one instance the rangers would be fighting in the mountains then end on a beach in the next shot.

I've always enjoyed the unmorphed fighting scenes, primary because all the rangers had their own fighting styles: martial arts enthusiasts (Jason, Tommy, Trini), gymnasts (Kim & Billy), and dancer (Zack). One of the reasons I, too, like the 2nd season.

Yeah, all of those monsters were from footage that Saban commissioned for the second half of season one/first half of season two. I guess he got the suits with the deal since they reused those monsters so much.

That makes sense. I'll add Pudgy Pig to the list of monsters I was tired of seeing too.

Since Saban ordered footage to be filmed why didn't they just make the yellow ranger female? I sort of touched on this in an earlier post but it's hard to suspend disbelief when watching now. In the Zyu2 footage the yellow ranger does more of the "girly/princess" type of poses that the pink ranger does and there seems to be more of a friendship with them, so I give them credit there. In all the American shot footage yellow is obviously female.

They probably didn't add a skirt to the Yellow Ranger in the Zyu2 footage A) for consistency with the American episodes in which the Yellow Ranger had already appeared skirtless, B) Toei, the company who works on Sentai, also made the Zyu2 footage, so they used the same materials for it, and C) there was enough footage filmed that Toei could have reused it themselves if they wanted. There were some subtle changes in the Zyu2 footage that lent themselves to PR, but nothing more than brief references that could have been removed if Toei wanted to do more episodes of Zyuranger with the footage that Saban paid for. Whereas having TigerRanger with a skirt would have rendered everything unusable for Japan.

I don't think the violence of Dairanger was the issue when it came to not changing the suits and using that footage, really. Saban and Disney have always cut around things that were too violent for American Standards and Practices. MMPR were the Power Rangers at the time and the beginning of the second season of MMPR was still during the show's extremely popular fad status, so Saban probably didn't want to alienate fans by changing the Ranger costumes too soon.

The show's fad status was ending and the show was bleeding fans toward the end of the second season and throughout the third season, which is probably why it was deemed necessary to take the risk and change the costumes for Zeo only two years later. It didn't even work then, really, because Zeo had even lower ratings than season three. Contrary to what a lot of fans believe about PR Turbo and the mid-season cast change, the ratings didn't start going back up for PR until the second half of Turbo when they dumped Tommy, Kat, Adam and Tanya for the four that went on to PR in Space. Apparently that got a lot NEW kids hooked where Justin the kid Ranger had failed.

^I completely agree why adding a skirt wouldn't have worked, but I didn't have a problem with the yellow ranger not having one. I actually liked that Trini didn't. Kim was the valley girl and she wasn't, so visually it set them apart immediately. What I was trying to say was when the Zyu2 footage was filmed, it would have been nice if a female stunt actor was used for yellow. However you did state why everything was kept the same if more Zyuranger episodes were produced (something I didn't know).

I don't remember anything after MMPR and even now I sort of refuse to watch anything beyond (lol). I will eventually. I have read that PR in Space is a really good season.

PR in Space was great. They got rid of the Justin kid, for starters, and Astronema was a villain who was both funny and badass. Plus, it tied up all the loose ends from the first 5 years of Power Rangers.

Haha! All this MMPR love is awesome. I love both the movies and followed until midway thru Turbo, when they brought in the new people and finally got rid of any of the "real" rangers. Can't believe it's been so long.

THe kid ranger was a pain in the neck. I was glad when they got rid of him.

I was going to make a new thread but thought I'll just use this old one. :D

Finally America is getting a proper DVD release of the series. A box set with seasons 1-7 is available for preordered here, and is expected to be shipped Aug. 6th.

Here's some some pics of what the box sets will look like. I already placed my order.

I pre-ordered mine... I just hope it does well enough that Shout will release Lightspeed through RPM as a second big box set eventually. (Samurai can GTFO.)

^Me too. I'm looking at this as away to get into the series post MMPR (cancelled my subscription to Netflix), so I plan on watching seasons 4-7 first.

Cool! My personal favorite season is actually Zeo (4), so I hope you'll get into it. ;)

My top three is Zeo, Time Force and either RPM or MMPR season 3. Bottom seasons are Mystic Force, Overdrive and Samurai for having unlikable characters and in Samurai's case horrific acting and writing too.

It actually kind of pains me that this show went from the magnificence that was RPM to the resounding fail horns that are Samurai and Super Samurai. I REALLY hope Megaforce (the 2013/2014 season) is better.

i used to buy the megazord for each season, which eventually got me into my transformers obsession.

of the new modern rangers, i like SPD, and RPM. i couldnt watch power rangers samurai because i had watched it sentai counterpari "samurai Sentai Shinkenger" and that series was so fucking beast, one of the best shows ive watched. they knew how to write a show, that people of all ages could like.

loved that doukoku was drunk on sake for the first half of the season, and loved my crazy bitch dayu.

i loved the power rangers when i was small. i have to admit though that i only really liked the first couple of seasons of the show. then when they started changing the power rangers i started to lose interest. Rita and Lord Zedd were really awesome tho. and the original red ranger was cute.

Watching it now and just got finished with episode 12, the first episode that Billy did NOT wear overalls. But yeah, soooo 90s, I can't believe I actually mimicked Kimberly's one liners back when this show started. And even back then, I knew about the differences because I was wondering why all the extras are suddenly Asian. I watched mostly every episode until Turbo, then I just lost interest.
