I can't believe that phrase has been around for ages. Does anyone else frown with disapproval at this phrase?

I disdain it because it implies that other countries are not worthy of God's blessing.

No I don't down on it. I'm not religious at all but its nice to say "God Bless Anyting". It contains no negative connotation. Same way if someone sneezes I'll say "God Bless You" even though I don't beleive in god as some may and it does nothing for me, maybe it'll make a true religious beleiver feel better. The US has to really start becoming less P.C. its actually disgusting at this time of year. One thing thats nice for a change is that now that I'm working at a Catholic hospital, I'm allowed to say Merry Christmas to everyone I see.

How is that? People have been saying "God save the King" and "God Save the Queen" long before anyone ever spoke the workds "God Bless America". History will show many famous speaches throuh time where the speaker has said "God Bless our Troops" or "God Bless our Kingdom, Empire, or Nation".

I've neither a problem with G-d bless America, nor any others, e.g. G-d Save the Queen.

During the Prohibition years in the United States, it was God bless America and God save The King. The rum runs from Canada and the British West Indies, were a blessing for many people during America's dry season.

It's being overused and it's being used by people like G.W. Bush, who should not dare to ask God to bless their anything, because frankly, Bush and his cronies don't know what God is. I am not religious, but I know that some people are not worthy.

Your 100% right about them not being allowed to use it. Everytime one of them says it I expect at any moment for fire and brimstone to start falling from the sky.

Worthiness to judge the worthiness of other human beings, is always a worthy thought on unworthiness in the eye of the beholder. Or am I also being unworthy?:D

I guess everyone wants someone to bless them. I say God bless you very coloquially and mostly in jokes or hyperbolic statements. It doesn't mean much to me anymore. Though it sounds smarmy when jackasses say it because they're swelling with patriotic pride.

I can't believe anyone would "frown with disapproval" over such an innocent phrase. Jeez. What about God Save the Queen? Does that get you all hot and bothered too?

The problem with "God Bless America" (beyond the non-existence of any God to do any blessing) is that the way it is used, particularly by the right-wing, is that it implies superiority for America. Almost as if there is a second, unspoken line and that the full phrase is"God Bless America, and Screw Everyone Else"

Beyond that, it also implies God's approval of America and therefore any action which America deems to be in its own best interests. Just pop it on the end of any anti-democratic, war mongering, torture-promoting, despot supporting speech spewed from Bush or Cheney or Rumsfeld or O'Reilly or Limbaugh or Coulter and it just takes the edge off, almost a little distraction at the finale.

There again the American way under God, has exposed the misuse and abuse of political and military power. There are politicians who have been obliged to resign and military personnel who are now serving prison sentences. Thus we might also argue that God does exist, as a result of American justice demonstrating that it can triumph over the evil that men do.

I hope you're not serious. Every nation invokes God's mercy on themselves. What you say could apply to the UK, and to each Islamic country as well (with "God willing" following every other sentence, including ones of self interest). It does not connote "superiority" unless you choose it to.

Anyone upset over "God Bless America" needs to get a life, imho.

That seems to be in the eye of the beholder, tht whole "and screw everyone else" part. The whole phrase like the bible itself is harmelss by its self. But like anyting, put it in the hands of the wrong person and it becomes a weapon. The majority of Americans dont want to "Screw" the rest of the world, in fact we could care less about the rest of the world. We have our own familes and bills to worry about. Sure most of us feel bad when we see depression and atrocities taking place around the world but by no means is there are secret adgenda of global distruction that American citizens carry around with them all day long.

When I was in London and Paris I didn't see God bless this or that signs, bumper stickers, etc.

I'm ranting about how it's overused here and has been downgrade to a bunch of cheap words. If I were a religious person I'd be offended.

My immediate thought when I read the post.

As far as I'm concerned people can say "God bless (insert any country)". Why is it that people in other countries always try to turn anything into a reason to hate the US. Last week it was Americans think everybody should spell words the way we do, even though I have never heard any American say that. I think people who try to create issues where none exist just have an inferiority complex. They need to put the US down to build themselves up.
