GOP Sen. nominee Christine O'Donnell: homophobe or closet case?

Christine O'Donnell has a habit of anti-gay rhetoric. Of course, disparaging non-heterosexuals is fodder for "Republicans" who claim to have values but are obsessed with homosexuality while — over the past few years — numerous in their ranks were revealed as closet cases.

Despite lodging homosexual allegations at her Republican primary opponent — 71-year-old Mike Castle — in campaigning for the Delaware U.S. Senatorial nomination, O'Donnell's own sexual identity hasn't been questioned.

Why not? It's not uncommon for a twisted one who hurls at others accusation to be [guilty] of the nature of such accusation. Consider: O'Donnell is 41 years old — old enough to be married, maybe divorced, with had at least one child. But She's never been married. No sign of a boyfriend. No record of past lovers.

For O’Donnell, such gay-baiting was very much in character. Toward the end of the Clinton administration, she protested the appointment of James Hormel to be ambassador to Luxembourg, a posting the religious right opposed because Hormel was gay. “The SALT was concerned about Hormel’s ties to the pedophile-rights movement,” her website said, though there was not a shred of evidence behind the slur. In 1997, in a clip recently unearthed by Talking Points Memo, she appeared on C-SPAN, where, looking fresh, lovely, and innocent, she objected to AIDS sufferers being called “victims” because the disease is the product of their own actions. In an appearance on Fox in 2000, she exclaimed over the horrors of New York’s gay pride parade: “They’re getting away with nudity! They’re getting away with lasciviousness! They’re getting away with perversion!”

I wouldn't be surprised by anything she did before she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior. After that, well, who knows. I guess I wouldn't be surprised by that either. My bet is that she's like an old maid schoolteacher. Then again, most old maid schoolteachers don't talk the way she does.

Additionally, and this is semi-unrelated, what about people who have homosexual desires or tendencies and believe that those desires are wrong. I would consider myself to be in this category. It's a struggle I fight with. And take a political example, would I vote for an amendment to make marriage between a man and a woman? Yes. I don't think that makes me a homophobe or hateful. I have these tendencies, in my opinion they are wrong and I try to not act on them.

I think it's a tragedy of the highest order that you've been on this site for 4 years and yet you still haven't thrown off the mantle of self-loathing and nonsense fundamentalist xtian upbringing.

I've watched so many exMormons, exJehovahs, exTheWays, exBaptists, and others get over their inaccurate understanding of god and the "bible" as fundamental religions teach them. I'm just sad you haven't.

You may think they are wrong, but just because you think it's wrong doesn't mean that you should deny others their rights.

But anyone who has spent time researching the bibles history and what a farce claiming the bible is against homosexuality knows that that's not what that book was talking about. Sadly so many Americans don't get that because they've never learned multiple languages and the realities of translating words that don't exist.

Doubtful. The overwhelming majority of people who are not religious have no problem with gay people. Their judgment wasn't clouded by religious bigotry as a child, so they never came to see that position as normal.

Since you have, it might be hard to put yourself in another mindset, which is why I say look to statistics. Had you not been raised in a fundamentalist family, it would probably have never been an issue for you.
