Yeah I got one in the mail from the DPS. They are required to notify us when one moves in the neighborhood.

His charges seem minimal, so meh.

......A big part of me wants to think that maybe they're better. Maybe they've been helped by various programs and counseling while in prison......

This also brings up the point of did they attend any programs and have counselling while in prison? If they did attend programs and receive counselling did they take it seriously enough to want to change? Lastly can sex offenders, such as you have described, even be changed or rehabilitated.

I can understand the concern any parents in the area would have. Hopefully there have been restrictions placed on these two or at least some way to monitor them.

The problem for society as a whole is that when sex offenders get out of prison they have to live somewhere. Where should they be allowed to live, though?

I just did a search. Ours is run by the state and then separated by county.

 There are a lot in my county.

95 on the city website list (city is about 85,000).

:bartshock

Just about every state (I think they all do) have a searchable list.

But sometimes it is just for peeing in an alley. :(

'Sex Offender' is such a broad term these days it is a bit silly.

Most of us probably have several in our neighborhoods, and you can check this on several on line sites. I was abused by a pedophile in my teen years, and no they cannot be rehabilitated. They are criminals, and what you might think is sex is not. It is abuse.

Good lord, and the one has been let out?

REALLY?! I hope he has an ankle brace that tells the police where he is.

Sentences are actually relatively short for sex oriented crimes. Additionally, prisons are overcrowded so good behavior can shorten that time even more. It really depends on the city and how much money it has, but those guys/gals probably aren't wearing ankle bracelets since there's so many ex-convicts to monitor. They're more than likely on probation though--have to meet w/ their probation officer once a week for drug testing, and may have to continue meeting w/ a counselor. Just depends. They probably also aren't allowed to be around children, but that really depends on the age of the prior victim and whether they are repeat offenders.

True, sex offender is defined rather broadly, but the exact crime should be listed. That will alert you to the approx. age of the victim, whether violence was involved, whether it is a repeat offense, etc.

This also brings up the point of did they attend any programs and have counselling while in prison?

In my state, the offender has to be within 3 years of his out date (release) before he becomes eligible to attend any such counselling. Note the word "eligible". That doesn't mean it's mandatory, and it doesn't mean he will get it. It just means he becomes eligible at that point to apply to be put on the waiting list, if he so requests.

In the interest of fairness to the [insert plural insult here] in state government, I should also note that my information is a little over 2 years old. But since the economy has gone down the crapper since then, I kind of doubt there's been much improvement on what they seem to consider as "frosting".

I keep asking myself why you get notified of sex offenders in your neigbhourhood, but there are no warnings about people convicted for crimes involving violence.

I mean why are people not afraid to have someone living in the neighbourhood who has beaten up or stabbed other people (or children), but they run around screaming bloody murder if sex is involved.

And no, I don't advocate any kind of violence. I'm just utterly amazed that violence is such an acdcepted behaviour in the human society, whilst everything that involves sex is on a completely different level.

For that matter, why aren't there notifications for any kind of crime? A DUI is at least as serious as shaking your dick at somebody in my book. And frankly, a convicted mugger scares me more than a convicted pedophile.

Also keep in mind that a girl could willingly have sex with one of these guys, then get perved/creeped out by them and cry rape. Bang, sex offender status. I'm not saying I'm on the sex offender side, but you can't just assume every single one is a child rapist. Well, actually you can, but you won't always be right!

I didn't know that the sex offender's actual offense was listed. When I checked locally 2 or so years ago, no details were visible and I didn't see any links (if there were any), so any local sex offender who got on the list because of "indecent exposure" (peeing on the side of a road) could be assumed to be a "child rapist like the rest of them."

That's the PUBLIC perception, anyway. I know that it's anything but that, but there are some offenders who did precisely that.

Describing and listing the offense, is that something more recent, or does it vary from place to place?

Ohhh, this country just loves the label game.

Don't forget, in a lot of people's minds, we (homosexuals) would be on those lists if some people had their way.

I live with one, my partner. There is a difference between "offender" and "predator", but not when it comes to "the list". It has been unbelieveable hell for him, and us.

Tell that to the label makers. Even if not convicted, it's going to follow you for the rest of your life.

So, he's completely innocent then? What happened?

Does it matter? The age of consent is the age of consent. Go below that and yes, it's a crime. Doesn't matter if the person was willing or not. The same if it's an older female w/ an underage guy (which we're seeing more of lately).

They have to have been convicted or pleaded guilty to the charges.

Although I don't find the Sex Offender list particularly useful, I'm surprised that it raises such passionate discussion for either side. Anytime someone is charged w/ a crime, that info goes into their local paper and can include the persons full name, the charges brought against them, the persons address, their court date, etc. It's public info. Doesn't matter if it's murder, theft by taking, disorderly conduct, kidnapping, writing bad checks, etc.

If they start calling guys who pee in a park "sex offenders", then this type of list becomes worthless.

Anyone, shouldn't municipalities have a network of clean public toilets? Mine does, free of charge for people from the same province. Others pay €1 per day.

I'm not so sure about that. Take this thread for example. At least five of you guys mentioned disliking the list, have noted that someone might make the list for public exposure (and I guess some of you don't really feel it's warranted,) etc. Clearly there's distrust of the list's validity and you fellas aren't the only ones who are skeptical. Couple that w/ the attitude held by some other folks that the female/male victims were lying, or the cops were lying, or the whole justice system is corrupt and just sucks, and I think the numbers will be even btwn those who are frantically looking up convicts on the list to see who lives near them, and those who are shaking their heads at the list b/c it's absurd.
