Cameron,
I'm glad you could LISTEN and HEAR well enough to know the truth in Josh's words, and to go punch out Michael's lights.

Now, Get over the angst -- You KNOW Cameron is innocent of ALL Charges, you Dumb Fuck!

Go home to him. Hold him. Kiss him, Hug him, Make mad, passionate love as an affirmation to him. Do it NOW!

Josh - YOU have NOTHING to be sorry about. YOU did NOT hurt Cameron -- Cameron let Michael hurt Cameron. Get YOUR act together, too.

InthCloset -- a powerful chapter. I can feel the emotion steaming off my PC as I read this chapter. Poignant. I know they'll be OK. Make it So! (Pretend you heard that in my best Jean Luc-Piccard impersonation, OK?)

(*8*)

Okay guys, I got really into writing this chapter. It's pretty long in my opinion so I hope you guys are happy with it.

Prepare yourselves, it's about to get really bumpy.

--------------------------

“You punched him?” Mark asked.
“Yeah, I’m not really proud of it,” I said.
“Why the hell not?” he asked, “You could stand to be a little more aggressive sometimes Cam.”
“Yeah, I know,” he said.

He looked up from his paper at me. I was playing with my fingernails thinking about what I had just done. I could hear Brianna playing in her bedroom and the TV in the background, but my thoughts still drowned every other sound out until Mark spoke again. I was almost startled when he said something.

“So you going home any time soon?” he asked.
“I don’t know Mark…” I said.
“Why? Dude we both know that you’re not even mad at Josh. Why are you doing this to him?” he asked.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“Cameron wake up, Josh loves you so much that this has got to be killing him,” he said.
“You don’t think I’m hurting too?” I asked.
“No, but he probably thinks you hate him right now. How would you feel if you thought Josh hated you for something that wasn’t even your fault?” he asked.
“Mark it’s just not that simple!” I said.
“Then make it simple, Cam. Go home and talk to him. Kiss it out. You know it’s what you want,” he said.
‘Yeah it’s what I want. But I don’t think I can go back just yet,” I said.
“Why not Cam?” he said.
“Because when I saw that picture, I realized that Josh and I depend way too much on each other. When I saw him being kissed by someone else, I was so angry that my head could have exploded. I just need some time to myself for a bit to sort things out. We both do,” I said.

--------------------------

I woke up again to the sound of Chase barking at the back door. I looked at the clock which blazed in red “6:00.” I didn’t know if it was a.m. or p.m. because it was already dark. The early nights were probably the only thing I liked about late November. I went into the front room and saw Chase at the door whining. I opened the door to let him out. I realized how long it had been since I had eaten so I left the door open to go find something to eat.

There was nothing interesting in the fridge, so I went into the pantry. I found a box of Macaroni and Cheese in the cupboard and pulled some hot dogs out of the freezer. I set two pots on the stove and plopped a couple hot dogs in one and the macaroni in the other. I washed my hands and wiped them off with a towel. While I was drying my hands I heard my phone ringing in the bedroom so I threw the towel on the counter and ran back into the bedroom.

Out of habit, I closed the door and went over to my nightstand to pick up my phone. I hoped with every ounce of energy inside me that it was Cameron, but it was my boss. I debated for two rings whether I should answer it or not. I decided against it and let it go to voicemail. I sat on the bed and put my face in my hands. I couldn’t cry anymore, it just wouldn’t happen. I wanted nothing more than to hear his voice, to smell his scent, to kiss his soft lips, and to look into his bright eyes and see the sparkle once more.

No matter how much I wanted it, I feared that I never would experience those aspects of Cameron again; not after this. My thoughts kept circling around the idea that if he wasn’t back by now, then I must have hurt him so much that he didn’t want to come back, even though he promised. I don’t remember how long I was sitting on the bed, but it must have been a while. I had just remembered that I left the stove on when Chase started barking madly. I went to my door and reached for the doorknob, but instantly pulled my hand away. The doorknob was sizzling with heat. A cloud of smoke came up from underneath the door and panic started rushing through my veins.

The house was on fire.

I started panicking. I didn’t know what to do. I ran to the other side of the room, picked up my cell phone and ran into the bathroom. I dialed 911 as I slid to the ground against the far wall.

“911 Emergency,” the female operator said.
“My name is Josh Gordon. I live at 751 Washington Street. My house is on fire and I’m trapped in the back bedroom. I can’t get out, please send someone fast!” I yelled into my phone.
“Okay sir, I am alerting all nearby units. Please get into a safe place until they get there,” she said.
“Thank you, please hurry!” I yelled.

I hung up the phone and called the one person I wanted to talk to. The smoke was filling the room and I was feeling light headed. I knew that at any moment I could pass out or die, and those were the moments I wanted to hear Cameron’s voice. The phone rang 5 times until I heard him.

“Hi,” he said.
“Cameron please don’t hang up-“
“You’ve reached Cameron Davis. Sorry I couldn’t take your call. If you leave a brief message I’ll call you back ASAP.”
“Cameron, please…It’s Josh. The house is on fire and I can’t get out. I need you please…” I tried to keep talking but my vision was getting blurry and my eyes were getting heavy. I couldn’t stay awake and I drifted off into the darkness, hoping that Cameron would meet me on the other side.

--------------------------

“Cameron, that is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard,” he said.
“Excuse me?” I asked.
“Come on man, you got jealous. It’s completely normal. It’s not something you should get so upset about that you hurt him and yourself because of it,” he said.
“No, it was a lot more than that,” I said.
“Of course it was. It was your ex and Josh. If I found my ex kissing Brooke I would probably shoot the fucker,” he said.
“I keep forgetting that you’re bi,” I said.
“Don’t change the subject,” he said.

Just then, my phone started ringing. I looked at it and it was Josh calling me. I silenced the ring and put it down on the table.

“That’s him isn’t it?” he asked.
“No,” I said.
“Cameron you’re a bad liar. Answer the damn phone. We both know you want to more than anything right now, so just do it,” he said.

I stared at the phone for a moment. I mulled the thought over in my head. Mark was right, I wasn’t even mad at him. I was mad at Michael, I was mad at myself, I was mad at everyone except Josh. I opened my phone and hit “Send” to answer but it had already gone to voicemail.

“Crap,” I said.
“What happened?” Mark asked.
“Not quick enough. Hold on a sec,” I said.

I tried to call him back but the phone just kept ringing. I hung up after the 6th ring and tried calling the house. It rang once and then the annoying recording came on saying, “The number you dialed is not operational. Please hang up and try again. If you need help, hang up and then dial your operator.” I got worried when this happened and looked at my phone again. I noticed that there was a voicemail so I opened it and listened.

Brianna came running into the room with her stuffed bunny in her hands. Josh and I bought that for her about a year ago and seeing that made my heart skip a beat as I remembered the day we bought it.

--------------------------

“Come on, we’ve been gone a week. She’s going to expect something from us,” Josh said.
“Yeah I know, but we’re going to be late for the movie. Can’t we get something afterwards?” I asked.
“They’re gonna be closed by then and they’re not open tomorrow,” he said, “Come on it’ll take two minutes.”
“Fine, but if we miss the trailers I’m not talking to you for a while,” I said.
“I’ll risk it, now come on,” he said.

We walked into the toy store and looked around for a moment for something Brianna would like. Every time we went out of town for more than a week, we had to get Brianna something to make up for not being around, and Josh always insisted on some kind of stuffed animal. We got her a stuffed dog that looked like our new puppy Chase last time but she lost it in the park. She cried for hours when she realized that it was gone.

We were looking around for about 5 minutes when Josh stopped and stared at this little stuffed bunny that was sitting on the shelf. It had a heart shaped nose and it had light brown fur with a white belly. He gazed at it for a moment and then reached his hand out to it. He didn’t grab it, just put his hand on its back.

“This is perfect,” he said.
“Really?” I asked.
“Yeah,” he said, “Her favorite book is The Velveteen Rabbit. This is perfect for her.”

I smiled at him as he gently pulled the bunny off the shelf. I could see a sparkle in his eyes that only appeared when he was looking at me or Brianna. I grabbed his open hand as we walked to the register and paid for it.

***
When we got back home, Brianna was so happy to see us that she almost didn’t notice the stuffed bunny in Josh’s hands. Ever since he handed it to her, it was like there was a weird connection with them. Whenever she had it around Josh, their moods were always in sync. I don’t know how to explain it, but it was like that bunny made sure that they were never apart from each other, even when they actually were.

--------------------------

I was punching in my password when Brianna came running into the room. She had this frantic, terrified look on her face. I heard her talk to Mark as the message started playing on my phone.

“Daddy! Daddy!” she yelled.
“What’s wrong honey?” he asked.
“Fire!” she said.
“What? Where?!” he asked looking worried.
“Uncie Josh!” she yelled.
“What?” Mark said.

After I listened to Josh’s message I went running back into the room.

“Mark, get the keys we gotta go!” I yelled.
“Why what’s wrong?” he asked.
“Josh is in trouble. The house is on fire and he’s trapped somewhere inside, we gotta go now!” I yelled.

Mark grabbed the keys from the counter and I grabbed Brianna on our way out. I put her in her car seat and we sped off into the night. I could hear the sirens when we pulled into the neighborhood, but they were still at least half a mile away from how distant they sounded.

Mark pulled the car over at the corner of the cul-de-sac and I flew out the door. I gazed upon our house that was lit up in flames. I ran towards it screaming for Josh, but Mark grabbed me and held me back.

“Cameron no!” he yelled.
“Let me go! I have to save him!” I yelled as I ripped myself out of his grip.
“Brianna, stay in the car! Keep the doors locked and don’t let anyone but me or Cameron in. Do you understand me?” he yelled.

I went running up to the front door of the house after I broke free of Mark’s hold. There were flames dancing on the other side of the glass and the heat emanating from it was unbearable. I backed up and then saw through a gap in the fire that the back door was wide open.

I ran around the backside of the house and kicked the gate open. I was about to run in when Mark came up behind me.

“Cameron! Are you crazy?!” he yelled.
“I have to save Josh! It’s my fault he’s in there!” I yelled.

I looked around and saw Chase on the ground outside.

“Chase!” I yelled.

I ran up to him and grabbed his collar. His stomach moved and let me know that he was breathing. I shook him a little to try and wake him up, but he wouldn’t move.

“Mark, get Chase out of here. I think he’s been breathing the smoke. Take him to the vet fast!” I yelled.
“What about you?” he asked.
“I’m going in,” I said.
“Cameron, don’t!” he yelled.

It was too late. I threw my jacket off of my torso and charged into the open sliding glass door. My lungs instantly felt heavy as the smoke filled the air. I pulled my shirt over my face to try and filter it as I yelled for Josh.

“Josh where are you!” I yelled.

I moved through the hallway and saw the bedroom door closed. There were flames on the wall around it and the handle was sizzling with heat. I shoved my foot into the door and felt it crack. I shoved it into the door again and it popped off the hinges which were soft from the flames. I ran into the bedroom and yelled for Josh again.

I looked around but couldn’t see him anywhere. Then I noticed the bathroom door was closed so I ran in. The flames hadn’t reached it yet so I was a little relieved. I opened the door and saw Josh sitting in the bathtub unconscious.

“Josh!” I yelled.

I ran to him and pulled him out of the bathtub. I instantly began CPR on him. It must have been about a minute of pushing air into his mouth and pumping his chest, but it felt like an eternity. I stopped for a second and collapsed. My head fell on his chest as I began crying hysterically.

“Josh! Please don’t leave me!” I yelled.

OMG! You did say it was going to be bumpy.... But bumpy is a mild term to what I would call it. You sure have a way to keep us on edge, ITC. Don't keep us hanging too long..........please!

IntheCloset,
This is a super emotional chapter.
Will Josh be OK?

Was it accidental? I don't think so for a minute. I think the bastard snuck in and torched the place while Josh was on the phone.

Right now, getting Josh and Cameron back out of the house, and Cam breathing OK are the important things. Will Cam remember details if/when he resurfaces?

Frantic, fearful, fantastically crafted. I hate what has happened, on general principals, but the artistry of getting us to this spot is great.

I definitely will be "standing by" for the next installment.
 :help:

This is a good chapter but what happens next could make or break this story for me. This could stay one of the best stories up here in my opinion or it could become just a good story.

(Notice I'm not saying what will make it good or bad. I want to see what ITC does without swaying him.)

Wooooooooow! Poor Josh :(

Serious and sad chapters, but exceptionally well written. Thanks ITC, you have us on the edge of our seat.

Oh boy ITC, you really enjoy writing about tragedies, don't you?:grrr: Anyway, I agree with the other comment. The time frame between Josh's leaving 2 pots on burning stove and leaving to pick up the phone in the bedroom isn't long enough for the pots to dry out and cause the fire in my opinion unless ITC forgot this fact. #-o I REALLY REALLY hope both of them will be ok. :help:

TWO updates. Hooray. Though...the second update was mega-depressing. Well...let's hope they end up together.

What a great chapter. It's too bad it took a fire for Cameron to realize that Josh really was what he wanted and needed. I hope things work out for the buys.
Vic

i feel so terrible for cameron--if he loses josh he'll never forgive himself.

i also feel terrible that this story is ending soon. it's just too good!

Ok guys, here is the next chapter. I know I caught you guys off guard with that last one, but trust me it's all leading up to the final moments of the story. There are only two chapters left, and after this one you should be able to guess what's going to happen.

Anyway, here you guys go!

-------------------------------

I woke to the smell of burning paint and wood as my lungs were pumped with air and my chest was smashed by someone’s hands. I hacked and coughed as my throat felt like I had swallowed a thousand tiny razors. I opened my eyes and thought I was dreaming when I saw Cameron’s face. His eyes sparkled when he looked into mine and he threw himself onto me, crying hysterically.

“Oh Josh! Thank God you’re ok!” he said.
“Cam…” I said with a cough.
“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry Josh,” he said.
“Did you get my message?” I asked.
“Yeah,” he said with a small laugh, “I got it.”
“Thank you for coming,” I said weakly.
“We have to get out of here before the house collapses,” he said, “Can you walk?”
“Yeah I think so,” I said still coughing.

He helped me to my feet as we made our way out of the bathroom. The flames had spread into the bedroom and the air was full of smoke. Cameron pulled my shirt over my face when I started coughing again. With my left arm around his shoulders and his right arm around my torso, we hobbled out of the bedroom over the door he had kicked down.

The hallway was now a block of fire. There didn’t seem to be any safe path through it. I looked at him, and he looked at me. He took a deep breath and kissed me forcefully. His hand moved from holding my hand around his shoulder to the side of my face as he kissed me even deeper. He pulled away and stared into my eyes. The sparkle in them had returned and the pain and fear I felt temporarily subsided.

“What was that for?” I asked.
“In case we don’t make it out of here, I wanted you to know that I was never mad at you,” he said.
“Cam,” I said.
“No, I mean it. There is nothing I can say or do to make it ok that I left. I will never be able to make up for making you think I hated you,” he said.

I looked at the floor as I started crying. The fear had returned, but it wasn’t the same fear. Before I was afraid that Cameron was still mad at me even though he was saving me. Now, I was afraid that we might not make it out of here.

“Cam…” I said.
“Josh…” he said.
“I love you,” I said as I put my hand on his cheek.

A moment of silence passed between us. He looked up into my eyes and put his hand on mine against his cheek.

“I never stopped loving you,” he said.

He leaned in and kissed me again, but this one was softer, and more caring. I felt one of his tears fall on my shirt. I pulled away and wiped the rest of his tears off of his face. I smiled at him and felt my heart skipped a beat when he smiled back with his gorgeous, breathtaking smile.

“How are we gonna get out of here?” I asked.
“I think I know,” He said.

He turned around to the doorway of the guest bathroom and kicked it in. He pulled out the fire extinguisher from the cabinet and unhooked the hose. He aimed it at the left side of the hallway and squeezed the handle. The flames temporarily subsided and he motioned for me to run through.

I took a deep breath and charged through the side. I felt the flames lick at my right arm and let out a little yell. I suddenly felt Cameron’s hands on my waist and the pain went away. We were just about to the other side when I felt his hands move away from my waist and heard Cameron shout in pain. I turned and saw him lying on the ground just on the other side of the flames in the hallway.

“Cam what happened?!” I yelled as I dropped to his side.

I looked at his leg and it was twisted around with the bone sticking out. There was a hole in the ground just behind him where the level between the basement and the living room was falling through.

“I tripped, I’m ok!” he said.

He tried to get up by pushing up from the ground but he screamed as soon as he moved his leg. He tumbled over and ended up on his back. He looked down and saw his leg. It was definitely broken, and he couldn’t get up.

“Cam, let me help you up,” I said.
“No, no I can’t,” he said.
“What?” I asked.
“Josh, just go. Get yourself out of here, you can still be safe,” he said.
“What are you saying?” I asked, “You want me to leave you?”
“No, I want you to be safe,” he said.
“No Cam. I’m not going,” I said.
“Josh, you have to get out of here,” he said.
“I’m not leaving you here,” I said.
“You have to get out!”
“I am NOT leaving you HERE!” I yelled.

I looked away from him. I didn’t even want to think about leaving him to die much less talk about it. He put his thumb and forefinger on my chin and pulled my face back to look at him.

“Josh, it’s ok,” he said.
“Not it’s not,” I said, “All of this is my fault.”
“No Josh, this isn’t your fault,” he said, “But I need to know that you’re safe, so please go. Be safe. Be happy. Live your life.”
“Cameron I can’t live without you,” I said while choking through the tears.
“Josh, you have to go,” he said, “I don’t wanna die, but I don’t want you to die because of me.”
“I love you,” I said, “And I’m not leaving you.”
“Josh-“
“No we’re going to make it out of here,” I said, “You and I are getting out of this. And when we do I promise we’re gonna get married. No matter what, I will be married to you before either of us die.”

I pulled him into my arms and we held each other as the flames came closer to us. It was as if time slowed down as they inched their way closer to Cameron’s feet. We held our breath together. I realized I didn’t want to die this way, so I pulled his face away from my chest and up to mine to kiss him. I held the kiss until I felt my chest get heavier.

“I promise,” I said again.

My breathing felt short and the sounds around me began to drown away. I felt Cameron’s grasp on my shoulder release and his other arm fell to the floor. I was about to let the darkness take over me when I felt Cameron be lifted out of my arms. I opened my eyes and saw three men in black. Two of them were holding Cameron and another was bending down towards me. He put my arms around his shoulders and guided me out of the house.

Cameron was put on a gurney and wheeled into a white van that was sitting in front of the house. The man that held me on his shoulders helped me into the van and strapped an oxygen mask onto my mouth. I sat there hacking and coughing the smoke out of my lungs and watched them working on Cameron. He was deeply unconscious and the people in white were working hard to wake him up.

The darkness that clouded my awareness slowly lifted away as I began to realize where I was. I was in an ambulance on the way to the hospital and the paramedics were reviving Cameron. He started coughing and wheezing and opened his eyes. He didn’t look away from me, and I didn’t look away from him until the ambulance stopped and we were taken out of the back and into the hospital.

I was immediately put onto a bed and wheeled into a room. Cameron was wheeled in seconds later. I looked over at him, and he looked at me. He smiled. I smiled. I mouthed the words, “I promise,” and let the overwhelming exhaustion take me over.

***
I woke up to the sound of the door of the hospital room opening. A man in a black suit walked in and sat down on the chair next to my bed. I sat up and looked him in the eye. It was Michael.

“What are you doing here?” I asked.
“I heard about the fire,” he said.
“Yeah?” I asked.
“I just wanted to say that I had nothing to do with it at all, I swear,” he said.
“I know. The fire department said that a dishtowel fell onto the stove and caught fire. The fire spread quickly because the heater dried out the air,” I said.
He sighed with what sounded like relief and said, “I want to apologize for any problems I caused you and Cameron.”
“You really need to stop talking and get out of here right now,” I said.
“I’m sorry,” he said as he got up, “For everything.”

He left the room quickly and I suddenly remembered that Cameron was in the bed on the other side of the room. I got up and walked over to his bed. He was sleeping soundly, so I put my right hand on his arm and my left hand on his head and kissed his forehead. He opened his eyes and smiled at me.

“Thank you for keeping your promise,” he said sleepily.
“Have I ever broken a promise before?” I asked.
“Never,” he said.
“I meant it,” I said.
“Meant what?” he asked.
“I meant the part about us getting married. I wanna do it,” I said, “And nothing is going to stop me.”
“Promise?” he asked.
“I promise.”
“I love you.”
“Always…”
“…And forever.”

Before I write the next chapter on paper, I just wanted to take a moment and thank each and every one of you. You guys have encouraged me every step of the way to continue writing and it is thanks to all of you that this story has made it this far. I do plan to write another story, but it won't be anything in comparison to the level of romance and drama that Josh and Cameron reached.

I want to thank you all for your loyal reading and your generous comments. I also want to thank the few of you that PM'd me with suggestions and questions. I'm glad that I could provide this story to you guys, and I'm glad you all continued to read despite my long breaks between some chapters. It has been almost a year since I posted the first chapter, and since then I have been through a roller coaster of emotions with this story. Thank you for being so patient as I waited for my inspiration to spark during slumps, and for all of the encouragement you've given my writing.

I have yet to decide what my next story will be titled, but I will try my very best to make it as entertaining as this story. Thank you all once more, and I sincerely hope you like the last two chapters.

At 1:33am I'm going to tell you that I'm glad i can't sleep for once. That was the best chapter ever. So full of love and emotion. Yes a perfect beginning of the end to a story.

ITC,

Now that I know that Josh and Cam are safe and that Michael has apologized and left I can breath a sigh of relief. I look forward to the last two chapters and will be sad to see the story end, but all good things do come to an end. Thank you for sharing this awesome romance with us. It has been a wonderful read.

Please keep us informed on the new story.

Phew. Intense chapter that highlights the ever so powerful love Cam and Josh have for each other. Glad it worked out okay so far. I look forward to the next 2 chapters, even though it will be bittersweet seeing such an amazing story conclude.

Thanks again, ITC. And I'm thrilled to hear you'll be writing a new story, I'll anxiously await that one as well.

Dear IntheCloset:
A great chapter.
I'm glad Michael wasn't the deadly psychopath we were thinking he was.

The love and caring they show for each other mirrors what I sense is in your heart.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to bring it out of you and onto this electronic page for us. We truly appreciate it.

(*8*) :wave: :=D:

ITC that was the best chapter so far. I am glad that boys guys got of the fire okay and have finally decided to marry. It's too bad there are only two chapters left, but as has been said, all goods things must come to an end. Looking forward to the next story.

Thank goodness that Josh and Cam are OK!:=D::gogirl: Yes, this chapter is the most emotional so far yet. I cried when Cam told Josh to leave him behind and live his life. I'm so glad that the help came on time. I still wanna know who sent the blackmail photo though. Is it really Michael?

"Last TWO chapters" ??? *Sniff sniff* Guess I don't want Cam and Josh out of my life haha. Thanks for a good run though!!
