Grits: Yummy or Gross?

It pains me to say this, as a Southern born Boy, but I despise Grits.

One of the best things I love about moving to the South. I'm trying to convince a friend to try them, but her super negative friend keeps slamming them even though she's never eaten them before. I don't understand the disconnect--it's basically like polenta.

Cheese grits are the best!

Grits are supposed to be served salty, with shrimp.

Ooo !

I forgot about shrimp and grits. Surprisingly tasty !

:gogirl:

I love grits... and I was born in NY as well... served with a bit of brown sugar and butter... I don't care for the cheese but my mother loves it with cheese.

As for Cream of Wheat.... I personally loathe that crap.

Incidentally, grits are made of the same substance as CornNuts (which is: hominy...inedible feed corn soaked and softened in lye then washed clean and dried like beans).

Are all grits made from hominy? I mean, across the American South? JUB millers? ;) (sigh)

Hominy is edible corn. Remember it's practically the essence of Mexican cuisine; there it has manifold iterations.

Grits are yummy and are pretty flexible culinarily. Traditional service is delicious, but they will do well in Italian cuisines where polenta might be served (very little difference)...or with braises of many sorts...including stuff with chiles...wild mushrooms...and yup some cane syrup, why not...grits and sausage is tasty...I know my friends might protest, but I like grits many ways.

^^Shrimp and grits!^^ Fuck yes!

I can't stand eating Oatmeal and Cream of Wheat, so I think I would hate Grits too, even if I have never try it before. :( Their textures are just so weird, it's not soft and smooth like mashed potato, or solid and hard texture like rice or bread... T_T It's just way too boring and out of place.

I love grits, I absolutely love it. Like others have said, it has to be cooked properly; if it has too much water, it is not going to taste good. Also, it really has no flavor by itself as it's somewhat bland, so adding Brown Sugar, Butter, Shrimp or Cheddar Cheese makes gives it extra flavor.

I'm going to hunt down every one of you who puts sugar on your grits, and I'm gonna smack you silly. Grits are supposed to be served salty, with butter, cheese, gravy, or shrimp. NEVER put sugar on grits. If you want a sweet hot cereal, eat cream of wheat.

:jab: Bring it on

I've never seen grits outside of some pics in cookbooks. I don't know anywhere to get them, or even anyone who can make them.

Never had the urge to try them.

I've heard about porridge, but not grits

Yummy!

For breakfast, a "little" butter or mix them with the runny yokes of my eggs.

For dinner, schrimp and grits (Cajun Style) is the best!

I don't just put sugar on my grits, I pour sugar in my grits, the whole batch! lol, I don't like buttery grits, nasty.

While traveling around the south, I have found many restaurants serve grits with breakfast, and most are gross. Grits are made from corn btw.

I have had some really good grits when they are home made.

We have a Cracker Barrel Restaurant locally and they make lousy grits

Funny, really. I like Cream of Wheat, Cream of Rice from a bye-gone era, Oatmeal, Cornbread/Johnny Cakes, but grits and I don't seem to get along.

I play with different flours to make (almost) gluten free pancakes and waffles for my daughter, too.

I agree that they are very bland by themselves. My mom likes them, but not something that floats my boat, sorry. No disrespect to my friends and family South of the Mason-Dixon line.

Being a boy from Louisiana, I love love grits. Slap some bacon with that bitch and call it a day mm good...

Look what ronboy posted. There are instant grits!!! Gots to get me some. Yum, yum.
