Growing up what was your favourite car?

No offence, but why are you all choosing such middle-class crap?

Maybe because some of us weren't taught to consider that an item's price tag was directly proportional to its desirability?

I was born solidly middle-class, and I guess I was brought up drifting towards the higher end of that. I did occasionally see some of the high end vehicles - I recall seeing Ferraris and the occasional Lamborghini. But I only thought they were cool in that "I don't often see this one" sort of way. I never felt drawn to one, or felt how cool it might be to have one. It was just "oh, don't see that very often, that's cool". In other words, it was pretty much on par with a Subaru Brat. :)

A friend of mine in college built his own car out of spare parts. It looked like...well, it's tough to explain. Imagine a Lamborghini had been driven until it was borderline useless. A junker high-end car, kind of. That's what it looked like. Soon after college, after he started making a ton of money, he got rid of it and bought a Lotus. (It was apparently a really nice one, too - he once walked into the parking garage, and found somebody leaning against the driver side window, trying to get a glimpse of the inside. When my friend walked up, the guy stood up and grinned embarrassedly - it was Seal.) And he drove me to some function in it. Was it a nice car? Definitely. Would I have rather been driven in his beat-up homemade car? Hell yes. :)

One just like this pulled up beside me at a gas station on Sunday. I nearly crapped my pants. I instantly fell in love. The owner even let me sit in the back. It's a 1960 Chrysler Imperial Limousine.

But i love this one too. 1990 Chrysler Impetial. Just love the clean smooth lines.

@NiceGuywhoisBeautiful: ^ These errm very errm interesting things are virtually unknown in Europe, and yes I mean Western Europe ;)
But I've seen these cars in the 1980s, or 1990s I guess — in TV reruns of really crappy b/w SciFi movies ^^

Now I remember again  At least one of the U.S. American automobile abomin… cars! Im mean cars!, I saw daily in my late teens, because:
One of the most spoiled kids at my school had a vintage CADILLAC that looked like this, even the colour :o

Vitage cars were quite in vogue then — another boy had this:

— and a nice girl had a couple of the marvellous Borgward Isabella cars: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borgward_Isabella

But my parents gave me a very practical, not-really-vintage, car — ungrateful brat I was, I called them parsimonious, and the car boring — I had the European version of it, of course:

It would be a Volkswagen Super Beetle. I bought it new. My room mate went with me to pick it up and we went over to the shore of Lake Superior and I got my first piece of male ass in it. (In the front seat!!)

The first guy I ever had sex with, I picked up in a 1973 Beetle. But we took it to the side of the road - there was no way we were gonna get ANYTHING done in that car. I admire your flexibility. :)

This one.

That's a good car to get a little chitty chitty bang bang in. :)

Eventually mom bought a Pacer. At the time I thought it looked close to the Jetson's car. :)

I was pretty young at the time, but back then I thought the Pacer's windows were HUMONGOUS!!!! -Especially compared to most cars made back then. Mom finally sold it when her co-workers told her it looked like a turtle, or a pregnant skate board and she bought a sporty maroon Corvette instead.

"I not only want a crappy car - I want the entire world to see who it was who bought this car!"

Lex

LOL I was a kid. All I knew was it was the first car I could see out of without sitting on my knees or standing up... and I could see EVERYWHERE. Seat belt laws didn't exist then. It felt like a Jetson's bubble car. It was also fairly unique in that is was so bulbous and not the big boxy shapes I remember everything else being - with the exception of VW Bugs.

In the 60s, it was my father's Studebaker Lark: 4-door, 3-speed manual, 8 cylinders (it would do over 100 mph in second gear). Amazing car.

Similar to this, but jet black:

My dad's 2002 Vauxhall Zafira 1.6 Comfort. Traveled all over the UK (and once in The Republic of Ireland) in that car. It must have done about 250,000 miles by the time it was put into storage two years ago. It was worn out, but it had served us well.

It looked something like this:

Sigh.

If you click on the link in my quoted post above to the '59 Chevy and look closely, you'll see it has right-hand drive. The picture isn't flopped because Chevrolet on the hood isn't backwards. (You do say virtually unknown, though.)

Years and years ago I saw an English comedy flick on TV with Leslie Phillips as a real-estate salesman. He drove a '59 Chevy Impala convertible with right-hand drive. I'd place a bet it's the same car.

It was always Ferrari's for me. I still haven't completely outgrown it.

The 2003 Ferrari 360 Coupe really did it for me back then.

Besides cars I've actually owned, one of the fantasy cars from my childhood was (and kinda still is admittedly) the Aston Martin DB9:

One of the sexiest looking cars of the past 15 years, if you ask me.

Maybe because some of us weren't taught to consider that an item's price tag was directly proportional to its desirability?

The price is not the be-all and end-all. As a kid, having enough money to buy a car of any sort is so far beyond you that it doesn't matter whether it's a thousand dollars or a million dollars - you don't have it.

The car has flip lights, and goes really fast, and is exotic, and looks fantastic. It's the basic premise of Knight Rider (even if KITT couldn't do half the stuff it does, it would still be cool). Likewise the Corvette driven by Face in the A-team, and Magnum's old 308 GTB. Fast and exotic, but mostly good- looking.

Even if most of the Bond cars hadn't been tricked out, it was the design and the styling and the speed which made them desirable. The gadgets just popped them up into the sphere of the truly amazing.

The desirability was never solely about the price. Otherwise every little boy would have Bentleys and Rollers on his wall, not superbikes or hypercars.

Finally! Welcome, fellow traveler!

I was not a fan of the 360. I didn't like the paired big nostrils on that very square bumper. I far preferred the 355 it replaced, and the 430 which replaced the 360. But my favourite was the 550 or 575, with that single nostril on the bonnet.

One day when I'm big, I will have one of these. :D
