Hairspray!!!

Staying Alive and Saturday Night Fever were both dance movies (like the original Hairpsray) not musicals. Flashdance and Dirty Dancing are also dance movies as is Footloose. Dirty Dancing and Footloose have both been adapted into musicals as with Hairspray. Musicals have songs that propel the story but dance movies just have dancing.

meh.. depends on how strict your definition of "muscial" is.

Mine includes realist musicals which have spoken dialogue over a backdrop of song and dance.

I still say that if your movie has more than one production number, it's a musical.

I have no doubt the movie is good and I'm sure it will find an audience.

I just don't think that it's going to be a very big one.

Well we'll just have to see how it does at the box office. I still think a lot of people will see it for John Travolta or the rest of the great cast.

I know it probably won't do as well as the big summer "blockbusters) but I found it more entertaining than Pirates 3, Spiderman 3, Shrek The Third and Harry Potter 5.

Excellent flick. STayed true to the original (both of them). I was also amazed at the number of families and Straight couples at this showing. Must be that the dirty south is much more open minded than LA. Ok maybe not. I hope it does well because it makes some very pointed social commentary about accepting what is different.

Ya know it is almost worth it simply to see John Travolta in drag.

This isn't really a "remake" of the 1988 film. Its a movie version of the Broadway adaptation. IMHO I love both the original film and the musical film.

I am happy that the movie got so many good reviews, I am going to go see it tomorrow with the family after church.....can't wait.

Momma I'm A Big Girl Now is on the soundtrack sung by the Tracys (as I call them); Rikki Lake (the original Tracy); Marissa Jaret Winokur (the original Broadway Tracy) and Nikki Blonsky (the movie musical Tracy). There's also a version of Cooties by Aimee Allen.

I'd say this wasn't too bad of an opening weekend in anybodies book!

I just saw it this afternoon, and I have to admit the movie was a heck of a lot of fun! I was a little apprehensive after liking Water's movie and the Broadway show so much. Travolta actually does a really good job in the role of Edna and I didn't wince once when Efron came on the screen. Marsden is hot (as usual) and so is Michelle P. in this movie. Thumbs up! ..|..|..|

I just got back from seeing it....I really enjoyed it....it def wasn't as good as the original movie...but it def wasn't as bad as I was thinking it was gonna be...it was really fun. But I have to disagree with you paceyjack...I thought John Travolta was bad bad bad....what was that accent he was trying to do? It took place in f'ing Detroit! haha

Um, Did you hear the opening song, Good Morning, Baltimore? Corny makes reference to wanting to play some of the great music coming out of Detroit, but that's not where it's set.

And Travolta is the only one who tries to do a Baltimore accent. Any Baltimore residents here to comment on how successful he was?

yeah I just realized what I said...but still...is that really a Baltimore accent?

Don't know. I never knew Baltimore people had accents. lol

me neither...haha...that's what I'm saying...lol

I guess in a way John did make the role his own...cause Divine and everyone who's played Edna on stage has done the raspy, man voice...John seemed to actually be trying to do a woman's voice...so I guess ya can't fault the guy for trying something new..haha

John Waters has a Baltimore accent, but it isn't as pronounced as it used to be.

WOW...I loved this movie!!! Now, I'm a HUGE John Waters fan, and own all of his movies. I wasn't sure if I would like this as much as the original...but, I loved it!

I left this movie feeling the same way I did after seeing Mama Mia! Upbeat and happy. It was great!

OMG! This movie was FABULOUS! I loved every second of it! It's a ton of fun and a ton of laughs, and it's just so freakin cute! Zac Efron is goddamn stunning, and did a fine job. The girl who played Tracey was born to play that roll, she just lit up the screen! John Travolta was an absolute riot! I love the whole thing, it was just fantastic, and made me giddy!
