I supect they're the happiest because they've gotten everything they wanted in life: family, position, power, money and all that goes with it.

Like most wealthy Republicans (or at least well off) they are probably isolated from many of the political and social issues that cause anger/ fear/resentment/concern in many others.

That's the first thing I would have thought too, except for this from the article:

I was rethinking this and thought that maybe the reason Republicans say they're happier is because they aren't as likely to live in crowded urban centers and have less fear and worry of crime, of pollution, of high housing costs--that sort of thing.....

The Republican mindset reminds me of a Hollywood film from the early sixties, "The Valley of the dolls." Mind bending allegiance to the hallucinatory influences of such luminaries, as Sarah Palin has probably numbed most Republicans into Never Never Land. Better than, Valium, or Prozac. I'm a bit surprised that no one is questioning the results vis a vis men being happier.

From my experience with old people and the elderly, I generally find that until the age of 60 or so women seem unhappy, after that age, 60-ish, the crankiest, meanest and "unhappiest" folks I run into are old men. The elderly women seem much more content to me.

Do you think women are just more honest with pollsters, and men just don't want to fess up to unhappiness?

As one who also reads classical Greek philosophy (yes, I am a man, of many talents) I would add that everything in life, should be absorbed with a pinch of salt. Humour reveals the humanity of the human being. Over absorption with serious issues, depletes our capacity to reveal our human weaknesses. Human weakness garnishes friendships and woos our lovers.

Happiness is a concept that is constructed by the human being, in order to visualise what his, or her life, might well become when living ones life in pursuit of happiness.

BUT so often, the human being insists on fitting in to a predictable mould, rather than living in freedom to become all that happiness will reveal in the life of the fulfilled human person.

An ancient Greek philosopher said that happiness, is always present in our life, when we are in its pursuit.

Another Greek philosopher said that unhappiness is the reward for those who insist ion accumulating more stuff than their neighbour.

I do not own a car, and I do not buy designer clothes. I am also contented, with my meagre lot. I do not like popcorn, and I rarely eat pizza.
