HBO's Game of Thrones. ( No Book Spoilers Allowed -- Go to Hell.)

Re: A song of ice and fire: HBO's Game of Thrones

I just wanted to put a thought out there: concerning Jon Snow, is it crazy of me to think that he isn't Ned's son at all? Nothing is ever mentioned in the books, but there is a certain tone to a number of the conversations that lead me to think that maybe, just maybe, Jon is a Targaryen. I don't know, he certainly doesn't have the Targaryen trademarks: the blue/violet eyes, the silvery hair, the almost otherworldy beauty. But might that be just because the Stark blood is strong in him?

Re: A song of ice and fire: HBO's Game of Thrones

Cat was never one of my favorites. My favorite woman, Brienne the Beauty, the Maid of Tarth of course.

When did someone talk about legitimizing Jon Snow? I totally don't remember that from the books. i always thought that Cat hated Jon because she couldn't take it out on Ned.

There are rumors of that, but I don't think it'd be appropriate to discuss it on the shows thread since a lot of people haven't read the books. (I know they've been out for a while, and the show won't be back until Spring 2012, but I like to let people remain in suspense.) Unless you can use spoiler tags here?

I don't think the timeline works for that, plus the only House Targaryen female (besides Dany) we ever see was actually a princess of Dorne.

Re: A song of ice and fire: HBO's Game of Thrones

Yup. That's who I meant. I didn't know they were called "the others" originally.

I have no idea who Dany is.

You mean Daenarys? Is she going to be around for a long time? I love her.

Jon is 16? He looks around 26 to me.

They aged the show characters for, probably, a number of reasons. In the show, all the children/teens on the show you see are young. Dany (Daenerys) is 13, Jon is 16, etc.

There are some lesbian characters and bisexual characters you'll meet in the show. They aren't as well known as Renly/Loras, except for The Red Viper who is bisexual, who you'll meet later on.

You'll see instances of women fooling around with other women but I can't say that it's because they're attracted to them in a lot of cases, in some it's purely just for release.

Re: A song of ice and fire: HBO's Game of Thrones

I like that there are going to be some bisexual characters. :-)

Is Littlefinger gay or bi?

Straight. Completely. Though I will not lie I fancy the man who portrays him.

Re: A song of ice and fire: HBO's Game of Thrones

Why did Robert marry Cersei? And who was married to the king who died (the one before Robert)? Was that king Robert's dad?

And Petyr raised Cat and her sister? He seems too young for that.

Robert married Cersei to gain Lannister support in his civil war. Mad King Aerys (Dany's - yes I mean Danaerys, Grandfather) He was king before Robert and he also executed Ned's father and brother. We don't know who he was married to. I forget if it was Rhaegar who was married to Princess Eilia of Dorne or someone else. Rhaegar was the heir (Targaryen - the Last Dragon) he was the one who raped Ned's sister and Robert's betrothed, and started the civil war, which ended in Dany and her brother in exile, their relatives dead.

Petyr was fostered at Riverrun and grew up with Cat and her sister.

Re: A song of ice and fire: HBO's Game of Thrones

Oh and yeah, I suspect Dany is in it for the long haul. I suspect she's the one who ends up on the throne - but that's just a guess.

Re: A song of ice and fire: HBO's Game of Thrones

Thanks for the clarification and info. It makes a lot of sense now.

Robert wasn't descenced from Aerys blood line, right? He just took the crown after Aerys died and after the civil war.

Who killed Rhaegar?

So Robert is the one with all the bastard kids? Since Baratheons are all dark haired. And why didn't Robert know that Joffrey wasn't his son?

Robert is a Baretheon not a Targaryen, he killed Rhaegar at the battle of the Trident, in revenge for the rape. He was also the leader of the group of families that overthrew the Targaryen dynasty, that would be Him - Baretheon, House Stark, and House Lannister, as well as various and sundry other people like Howland Reed.

Jamie Lannister killed Mad King Aerys - even though he was one of Aerys' Kingsguard. It's why they call him the King-Slayer. He killed the king he was sworn to protect.

Re: A song of ice and fire: HBO's Game of Thrones

The interesting thing about how the books are written is that by the last one, you really start to feel for Jaime. Don't get too attached to your initial impressions of the characters because the rules are out the window.

They've only started there's a long way to go yet, and a lot of blood to spill.

Snape kills Dumbledore.

Re: A song of ice and fire: HBO's Game of Thrones

I'm going to be a bit more careful with my posts, just in case, but yeah, like TX-Beau said, you shouldn't get too attached to the way you perceive any of the characters. With this series, you can always expect a curve ball thrown in somewhere. Also, as things progress, you get this sort of feeling that history has been re-written to suit the needs of the victors. The vilest of offenders may not have been so vile, and the most valiant heroes may not have been so heroic. I mean that's always the case, but you really start to get this feeling that you're missing something.

Re: A song of ice and fire: HBO's Game of Thrones

The 5th book comes out on July 21st. Let's hope RR Martin starts wrapping up some storylines. Didn't particularly care for the 4th book.

Re: A song of ice and fire: HBO's Game of Thrones

^^Actually, Barnes and Noble has been advertising that it would be out on the 12th. Has something changed?

Re: A song of ice and fire: HBO's Game of Thrones

Thanks again. :-)

Jaime is one evil son of a bitch.

Absolutely, but if you get into the books you realize that his act of regicide was. . . more than justified. Aerys was one of those madmen that would not have been content destroying himself, to say the least.

Re: A song of ice and fire: HBO's Game of Thrones

Note: I haven't seen any of the TV series.

I started reading the book series because B&N recommended me to read it. I got all 4 books for $20 which is a steal. I am about 300 pages into the first book and it is quite good. I'm at the part when they are conspiring about who attempted to kill Bran and they think that the King or Queen might be involved. The plot is a bit all over the place and it switches from one arc to another and then crosses all over so I am a bit curious how well it plays out on the screen. Actually I would almost think it would be a bit better as for the visual queues instead of chapters.
