lafayette, as has been pointed out in many reviews. Is sort of like the voice of the audience. He says a lot of shit we are thinking. He grounds a lot of shit, and is also great comic relief.
Jesus fits into one of the books in Charlaine Harris series. He isn't in the books themselves, but because the producer has added a lot of extra characters, it is ok. He is the male Holly.
Holly was introduced for the same reason. She is a witch (i think they revealed that?) and will play a big part in next season. Just like Jesus. But her role isn't questioned because she is a straight female.
Oh, I should tell you, this next season is all about witches and magic.
I know the creator of the show likes to let developments span seasons and over time. They introduced Jesus early, one: to give Lafayette a much needed love interest, and two: to set up next season. Tara's storyline is pretty similar to the books. She is bad with men, and has yet to find a good one yet. I will agree though, that last season had too many storylines.
Actually... I forgot about Holly... she was pretty fucking annoying/contrived. I actually dislike her more than I dislike Jesus. She's another one of those minor characters that they're not doing a good job developing.... Shove her in randomly, boohoo I got raped... btw I'm witch and I'll help you kill your baby.........They're doing the fairy subplot characters much better than the witch subplot, because they flash us a peek and then keep us in mystery, instead of randomly adding them on to major characters and creating the illusion that they're remotely useful.
True Blood = Oh hey let's change everything good that was in the books, oh hey let's go here and then let's go there and then this happened and then oh hey main story again.... oh hey look we just created an annoying useless character.... oh I know lets just shove him in and hope he's useful in the next season, and then let's make all the more important characters minor and annoying, and then kill them off like hmmm Stan or like hmmmm Calvin fucking Norris..
Season 1 was amazing because it all fit together... They even pulled the Jessica subplot off well because they developed her story and made something substantial out of it. There were a few annoying parts to it like Jason's oh I love v addicted girlfriend... but that was easily overlooked.
Season 2 was the worst.... Maryann Eggs Tara Sam subplot didn't make the least bit of sense, and was so overly drawn out.... Let's not even being to talk about how ridiculous over-acted Godric/Eric was...
Season 3 was mildly satisfying because they got Alcide down perfectly.... Created something interesting with Russel and his bff.... Tommy and Sam's subplot was also interesting but ending up kind of flopping as did white trash cougar town..... Tara and that other crazy vamp was like.... REALLY? It feels like you just stuck him in there to make Tara forget about Eggs... even though she's already doing that on and off every other episode... sorry... grief isn't that contrived Also how convenient that Tara gets dragged into the whole Russel mess.... yup make her get hitched with the crazy vampire investigator BECAUSE THERE'S NOTHING ELSE FOR HER TO DO.
And then they realize now that (after lafayette gets locked up in season 2 and goes through PTSD for a seemingly fleeting moment) Lafayette is fucking useless to the plot... there's really no point for him being in the series minus the fact that every fan-serviced TB groupie peon that watches TB has some sort of man crush on him and because Nelsan Ellis is a good actor.... so they write in Jesus... who conveniently is a witch and also happens to be the nurse that takes care of his mommy. OKAY. REAL GOOD WRITING THERE. There's also the whole... let's make V do whatever we want it to do to people... even though it doesn't make any consistent sense. Especially that whole crap with Jesus going... oh you sell drugs.... drugs are evil, I hate you... just kidding I love you take V with me teehee now we can see things together and you can tell the future/see into the past, you have special witch powers now, my grandfather was evil, but you should use them for good, the end.
There's nothing wrong with writing in new characters or making minor characters important when they do it right, and they are perfectly capable of doing it right.... If they spent as much time thinking rationally about doing things on their own OR using the decently written books as a closer guide, this could have been one of the best shows in TV history.
