Health News that Trump Doesn't Want You To Know

153 unvaccinated students in protective quarantine after measles exposure... 🤦‍♂️

Measles is highly evolved to wreak havoc with an incubation period of 10-14 days before the rash appears. Children with measles are contagious 4 days before and 4 days after the rash appears. The primary mode of transmission is respiratory, with 1 case of measles typically creating 12 to 18 cases in an unvaccinated population.

What is more concerning is that contact tracing of the exposure source has not been successful, which means that there are cases in the community that have not been identified.

A recent measles outbreak in South Carolina has grown by two cases, according to health officials in the state, as the US outbreak total has reached 1,563 cases, the most in decades.

Seven measles cases have been reported in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, since Sept. 25, and the state has had 10 total cases this year. The current outbreak has no identified source, which suggests measles is circulating in the community.

In Muskegon County, Michigan, officials reported a second measles case with a possible exposure at an urgent care clinic. Michigan has now had 28 measles cases this year.

And more RFK disinformation out there.

And more RFK disinformation out there.

It's a perfect example of the fallacy of causation. Your dog pees on the carpet. You throw something at the dog. The dog thinks, "Peeing on the carpet causes something to fall out of the sky and hit me".

There's lots of kids on anti-depressants (prescriptions for anti-depressants written to teenagers increased about 50% during the pandemic). 99% of kids on SSRIs aren't shooting up their schools. Something that all school shooters have in common? Access to guns. It's the motivation for why they kill that researchers are not clear on... and because of Congressional legislation protecting the gun industry, it's hard to study and figure out why school shootings have become so common.

This is also the reason that politicians without a science background should not be appointed to these positions.

WHY do they want/need a causative link between paracetamol and autism? I don't believe for one second they care about the patients and want to treat the condition. So what is their personal gain from getting the drug schedule revoked or restricted? There must be money to be made somehow.
Meanwhile, every other country on the planet will continue to give paracetamol to pregnant mothers just as before and none will be afraid of it.

Robert Kennedy Jr, somehow between extra-marital affairs and drug addiction, found the time to get a law degree. RFK Jr is allied with a a group of attorneys who specialize in suing pharmaceutical companies in personal injury lawsuits.

Kennedy for years has earned referral fees from Wisner Baum, a Los Angeles personal injury law firm that is currently suing Merck, alleging the pharmaceutical giant failed to properly warn the public about risks from its vaccine against human papillomavirus (HPV), Gardasil, according to financial disclosure documents filed by Kennedy with the Office of Government Ethics.

Wisner Baum is representing a plaintiff in a trial against Merck and other lawsuits are in the works in North Carolina...

Kennedy has made about $2.5 million since 2022 in his work with the law firm, including $850,000 last year, public records show. Kennedy, himself a longtime personal injury lawyer, could earn even more if the litigation against Merck prevails given that he is opting to keep his stake in the pending court case, according to ethics documents filed before his confirmation hearings.

Why no pushback from the political crowds who get millions of dollars in campaign donations? There has been pushback behind closed doors. There are over 1,500 registered lobbyists from Big Pharma in Washington DC.

However, the "it's the women's fault" fits nicely into the social conservative agenda, which wants women to not work, to stay at home and to produce more [white] babies.

Being far away, I'm open to correction :
Their policies if enacted may get them (say) 2x as many "white" babies, but at the same time aren't they going to increase the number of "non-white" babied as well through the same policies, only 5x more. White families are better positioned to work around the hurdles.

For the past 20 years, right wing radio in the US has been pushing a panic narrative that the US is going to become a "minority majority" country where the sum of non-white citizens (and non-citizens) will exceed the number of white people in the country.

They blame the higher birth rate in minority women. They blame the number of [white] working women who delay pregnancy to attend college and have careers. They blame the use of birth control by white women. They also believe that white women are more likely to have abortions. As dystopian as it sounds, their agenda is to get white women to have more babies. It's not an unusual paradigm- Soviet Russia, Hungary and other authoritarian countries have had similar campaigns to get women to have more babies, particularly male babies.

It's also a recurring trope that, if something goes awry with a pregnancy, it must have been something that the woman did. In the case of autism spectrum disorders, this is an over-simplification of a condition that is likely to have multiple underlying risk factors, one of which is the age of the father. It's almost as if we haven't learned anything since the reign of Henry VIII.

The policies are designed to ensure a higher infant mortality rate among poor (black and brown) women.

And in case you have missed it...Project 2025 and the broligarchs looking to create fortress America are also looking to breed a slave class with poor healthcare, education and housing to do the work of immigrant labour.

And the measles cases continue to percolate in the background...

Mpox (formerly called monkeypox) has two strains: Clade I mpox and Clade II mpox.

In 2022, there was a worldwide outbreak of clade II mpox that affected gay men or men who had sex with men. Mpox in gay men was transmitted by close contact, which could vary from kissing to sexual intercourse.

There were about 30,000 cases in the US of clade II mpox in 2022. Fortunately, clade II is relatively mild. It causes a painful skin rash at the point of contact, muscle aches, headache, fever and fatigue that can last 2-4 weeks but the symptoms are not usually severe enough to require hospitalization in otherwise healthy people. A more widespread outbreak was halted by a mass vaccination campaign that focused heavily on gay men who had never received the smallpox vaccine. People have largely forgotten this successful 2022 vaccination campaign orchestrated by the Biden Administration and the CDC.

In 2025, California has had 3 cases of clade I mpox. Clade I is a more serious disease and is closer to the virus' ancestral cousin, smallpox. While clade I mpox has been circulating in equatorial Africa, the 3 cases of clade I mpox in California had no connection to travel to Africa. Even worse, contact tracers in California have been unable to connect the cases to a common source. All three of the California cases of clade I mpox were severe and required hospitalization. All 3 cases were in male patients who had sex with men.

Until 2025, USAID and the CDC had experts monitoring the outbreak of clade I mpox in Africa. DOGE cuts have eliminated much of the staff who monitored global outbreaks. Normally, when there is an unusual outbreak of communicable disease in the US, the CDC coordinates the information collection and communication regarding the outbreak. In severe outbreaks, CDC used to send ground teams to areas where there was an outbreak to help provide expertise.

DOGE ended that. The mpox page on the CDC website has no information about the clade I outbreak in California. This is what appears on the CDC website:

You haven't heard anything about the clade I mpox cases in California? This is what happens when a group of extremists defund public health and put a clueless extremist in charge that the HHS. It doesn't help that the US mpox case- whether clade I or clad II- have hit the gay community, particularly men who have sex with men.

With 3rd case of locally acquired clade 1 mpox in California, officials warn of community spread

Officials with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and local health departments have confirmed a third case in Los Angeles County of the more severe clade 1 mpox infection that was locally acquired, according to a CDPH news release.

Officials say the three recent cases are unrelated. But the fact that all three people had not traveled internationally indicates that local person-to-person spread is likely. The New York Times reports that one patient is from Long Beach and the others are from Los Angeles, which is about 20 miles north.

All 3 patients required hospitalization

All three patients required hospital care and are recovering. "Local health departments and CDPH are conducting enhanced surveillance and contact tracing to identify any additional cases and prevent further transmission," the CDPH said. "At this time, the risk to the general public remains low."

The agency added, "These cases indicate that person-to-person community spread of clade I mpox is occurring in California, primarily impacting communities of gay and bisexual men, and other men who have sex with men, as well as their social networks. Prior cases of clade I mpox in the United States have been associated with international travel to areas where clade I mpox is circulating."

We've had several discussions about Medicare Advantage in this thread and the "Healthcare Going Forward" thread. John Oliver did a good review of the pros and cons and why Medicare Advantage might not be the best option if you have complex health problems:

Keep this in mind because it's likely that the Project 2025 crowd may try to eliminate traditional Medicare and make Medicare Advantage the default choice.

It's flu shot season. This year, a strain of H1N1 is circulating. H1N1 is one of the strains of influenza that is more likely to cause severe illness. This year's flu vaccine does contain H1N1 and the preliminary studies are showing that it will lower your chances of contracting H1N1 by about 50% and it will greatly decrease your chances of getting severe illness.

Normally, the government buys advertising on TV and web ads but this year, because of the DOGE cuts at HHS and CDC, there were will less promotion encouraging the public to get their flu shot.

Can't fix stupid.

Long time crook and serial philanderer, Ken Paxton, the Texas State Attorney General and Trump fan, has filed a lawsuit against Kenvue, the maker of Tylenol, based solely upon Trump's false claims that "Tylenol" causes autism and ADHD. Nevermind that most acetaminophen dispensed in the US is generic. Nevermind that there's no research that supports a causation link between acetaminophen and autism or ADHD.

Paxton is running for the US Senate to replace John Cornyn.

We're now at a point where the State with the most uninsured patients and the highest maternal mortality in the developed world is willing to spend taxpayer money to file lawsuits based upon the crazy anti-science nonsense coming out of the White House and RFK Jr's HHS.

Texas AG Ken Paxton sues Tylenol manufacturer amid Trump’s pressure campaign

The lawsuit comes as the Trump administration has promoted unproven claims linking Tylenol use to autism.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit against the makers of Tylenol on Tuesday, alleging the companies irresponsibly marketed the medicine to pregnant women despite risks to children.

At the center of the lawsuit is the claim that acetaminophen can cause autism and ADHD, an unproven allegation that President Donald Trump and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. have promoted aggressively in recent weeks despite strong objections from the medical community.

The lawsuit, filed in Texas state court, alleges longtime Tylenol-maker Johnson & Johnson as well as Kenvue, which has sold the drug since being spun off in 2023, engaged in “deceptive trade practices” by hiding the risks of taking Tylenol while pregnant.

Since Texas outlawed abortion, maternal mortality and infant premature deaths have increased. And it's not because of acetaminophen.

A dramatic rise in pregnant women dying in Texas after abortion ban
Exclusive analysis finds the rate of maternal deaths in Texas increased 56% from 2019 to 2022, compared with just 11% nationwide during the same time period.

The number of women in Texas who died while pregnant, during labor or soon after childbirth skyrocketed following the state’s 2021 ban on abortion care — far outpacing a slower rise in maternal mortality across the nation, a new investigation of federal public health data finds.

From 2019 to 2022, the rate of maternal mortality cases in Texas rose by 56%, compared with just 11% nationwide during the same time period, according to an analysis by the Gender Equity Policy Institute. The nonprofit research group scoured publicly available reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and shared the analysis exclusively with NBC News.

This is why MTG and MTG's kids have been freaking out about the loss of subsidies for Obamacare/Healthcare.gov private insurance plans...

As Shutdown Fight Hits SNAP Aid and Obamacare, Trump States Set to Pay Bigger Price

As the government shutdown reaches the one-month mark, the country is about to hit two milestones that are set to make it feel all too real for many Americans. On Saturday, Nov. 1, food stamp benefits will dry up just as open enrollment begins for those purchasing health insurance for the next year, complete with steep, double-digit rate hikes.

The impact is going to be felt by millions of Americans. Some will find it tougher to put food on the table as soon as next week. Others will wonder if they can still afford health insurance for themselves or loved ones. Many will find themselves in both groups...

But many Republicans in Congress are just starting to realize their constituents are going to be hit harder than the Democrats on both of these issues. And what Democrats are realizing is that President Donald Trump 2.0 is not the same pliable neophyte they faced in his first term and that the disparate effects on his MAGA base is unlikely to move him. It’s a mismatched understanding that leaves at least 40 million Americans watching as their meals, medical tests, and savings accounts all stand to be pressure-tested in short order...

Trump states again are the biggest losers if things go as planned. Nationally, the Urban Institute’s state-by-state modeling estimates there will be a 38% decrease in subsidized health care coverage. But in Georgia—where Rep. Majorie Taylor Green has been sounding the alarm from inside the MAGA revival tent—that number hits 53%. In Louisiana, the dip reaches 61%. And in Texas, a staggering 60% of Lone Star State residents enrolled in a subsidized health plan will be cut out.

If so, they need to add more concrete reinforcements to that bunker.
