Health News that Trump Doesn't Want You To Know

One of the scenarios that epidemiologists learn to worry about is facilities where large numbers of people live: elder-care homes, prisons, jails, boarding schools, military barracks, et al. It's particularly troublesome when respiratory-transmitted diseases gain a footing into these facilities.

In the past, measles wasn't as much of a concern due to mandatory measles vaccination of children in the US. These days, we again worry about measles, which can spread rapidly in an unvaccinated population. Measles has a transmission rate so high that one case of measles can create ten more cases of measles before the first case has been diagnosed.

The news has been focusing on children who were kidnapped from Minnesota by ICE and taken to Texas and placed in an immigration concentration camp in Dilley, Texas.

Now two cases of measles have been diagnosed in the Dilley camp.

2 measles cases reported inside Dilley, Texas, immigration detention center: DHS

Two people detained at an immigration detention center in Dilley, Texas, were confirmed to have active measles infections, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

DHS said on Sunday the ICE Health Services Corp "immediately" took steps to quarantine the detainees to "control further spread and infection."

The agency said all movement within the facility has ceased and all individuals suspected of making contact with those infected are quarantined.

We watched the numbers of measles cases rise steadily after the 762 cases in the state of Texas until the total number of cases in the United States exceeded 2,000 cases in 2025. It has been nearly 30 years since we saw this number of cases of measles in the US.

As of 30-Jan-2026, 588 cases of measles were reported in the month of January . That's over 25% of the number of cases reported in the 12 months of 2025.

Measles cases at a university- something that we haven't seen in decades.

Students hit by measles outbreak at Florida university

At least seven more students at a Florida university are battling measles, health officials confirmed this week, as outbreaks of the virus continue to grow nationwide.

The students at Ave Maria University recently contracted the highly contagious virus, the school said in a statement this week, bringing to the total number of cases there to at least 57.

In a Feb. 11 online campus health update, the university wrote that since the start of the semester, 50 students "have progressed beyond the contagious period and now have natural immunity."

We're two months into 2026 and at 1,136 cases, we've had over half the 2,267 total number of measles cases in 2025.

Some reprieve to twinkie-wrestler RFK Jr's destruction of the vaccine advisory panel.

The original lawsuit, in federal court in Boston, focused on Kennedy's decision to stop recommending COVID-19 vaccinations for most children and pregnant women.

The suit was updated as Kennedy took more steps that alarmed medical societies, causing the plaintiffs to ask Judge Brian E. Murphy to take steps to address those policy changes too. For example, the amended complaint asked the court to look at Kennedy's actions concerning the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, which advises public health officials on what vaccines to recommend to doctors and patients...

Murphy, who was nominated to the bench by President Joe Biden, said Kennedy's reconstitution of ACIP likely violated federal law. He ordered the appointments — and all decisions made by the reformed committee — put on hold.

Oopsie. "Rogue employees", again. :D

Want to complain about animal testing? Would you like pepperoni and an order of bread sticks with that?

Callers hoping to voice complaints about federal animal testing with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) earlier this week instead reached what sounded like the voicemail for a popular pizza chain after a “rogue” staffer changed the phone’s outgoing message.

The White Coat Waste Project (WCWP), a nonprofit organization whose mission is to “expose and close the U.S. government’s $20 billion animal testing business,” urged social media followers last Friday morning to call the HHS and demand the agency cut funding for cat testing at a National Institutes of Health-funded lab at the University of Missouri.

The group’s post included two phone numbers that route to HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s office.

Calls that flooded in were initially either answered or sent to a standard voicemail, according to the group. But by Tuesday afternoon, callers were greeted with a message that said, “Thank you for calling Domino’s pizza. Can you please hold? Thank you.”

There were 400 more cases in March. The measles outbreak shows no signs of slowing. Note that there is a higher percentage of school-age children getting measles in 2026 when compared to 2025.

The CDC also increased the cases reported in 2025.

It's a great time to commit Medicare fraud, especially if you own a nursing home.

In May, 2025 Trump commuted the sentence of Cuban-American political donor Lawrence Duran. Duran had been convicted of defrauding the US government of $205 million in false medical claims. The charges included: conspiracy to commit health care fraud; health care fraud (11 counts); conspiracy to defraud the United States and to receive and pay health care kickbacks; conspiracy to commit money laundering; money laundering (18 counts); structuring to avoid reporting requirements (six counts). The convictions came with 50 years' imprisonment; three years' supervised release; $87,533,863.46 restitution.

And Trump did it again for another criminal who committed Medicare fraud- this time $39 million.

Reporting Highlights
  • Another Trump Pardon: Nursing home operator Joseph Schwartz was convicted of a $39 million fraud, but President Donald Trump pardoned him just three months into a three-year prison term.
  • A Troubling Pattern: Schwartz is one of several nursing home operators convicted of crimes who were granted clemency by Trump.
  • Devastated Families: The families of some patients in Schwartz’s nursing homes have been awarded millions of dollars from lawsuits. But they haven’t been able to collect from him.

Only a handful of labs are able to test for highly infectious or rare infections. The CDC is one of those labs... or it was until RFK Jr cut the staff and budget.

CDC pauses diagnostic testing for rabies, other infectious diseases

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has paused its diagnostic testing for a host of infectious diseases, including rabies.

The CDC on Monday posted a list of 27 tests that it either discontinued or made temporarily unavailable. Some tests, the agency noted, are available commercially.

Among those temporarily paused are tests for rabies, adenovirus and varicella-zoster virus, which causes chickenpox. Tests for the Epstein-Barr virus and oropouche virus are also among the tests discontinued, as well as respiratory panel tests, which detect SARS-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 and influenza A and B.

The CDC published a list of 27 lab tests that it no longer can provide, noting that "some" of the tests may be available from commercial labs.

The cuts to the CDC are so severe that some "teams" of virologists now only have one or two members left.

The CDC used to be one of the Gold Standard global health organizations...but increasingly, not so mmuch.

This is a tragedy because the effects ripple all the way back through the education system as the US becomes an increasingly unfriendly environment for public research and health sciences and students look elsewhere for schools and post grad opportunities.

What a rude, condescending remark. That's it. I'm out of here.

The rabies lab tests samples all across the country.

The rabies headline was a bit of sensationalism by the media. The US is not dependent upon the CDC to test for rabies. Any commercial lab can do human testing for rabies- from saliva or spinal fluid- and the turnaround is much faster.

The CDC labs test rabies from necropsies- animal specimens. The national parks use the CDC lab for testing. State parks can either use their State lab, if they have one, or they can send the specimen to the CDC.

Rabies is 100% fatal in humans, when untreated. Usually, the number of human cases in the US can be counted on one hand. It's very rare. Post-exposure prophylaxis is usually given without waiting for a test result on the animal.

The issue with the CDC lab is surveillance and expertise. If there's an outbreak of rabies in the national park system, it could be missed if there's not timely testing. But that's not the biggest concern: state-level health departments were ravaged during COVID-19 and they lost many of their experts. The CDC experts go anywhere in the world where there's an epidemic, so they have the expertise on how to manage measles, adenovirus, malaria, dengue fever and many diseases that most health departments don't track and don't know how to manage.

The US is having an estrogen shortage.

The shortage appears to be related to a Nov 2025 change by the FDA in labeling for estrogen. Twenty years ago, the FDA added a warning to estrogen medications indicating that they were associated with heart problems, increased risk of cancer and increased risk of dementia. After further review, these claims were found to be inaccurate.

Unfortunately, when the FDA removed the warning, RFK Jr gave a press conference where he claimed that menopausal women who did not use estrogen replacement therapy would be at a higher risk of Alzheimer's disease and cardiovascular disease. This spread through social media, causing a panic. Women experiencing menopause went to their doctors and requested to be put on estrogen. This triggered a shortage, particularly in estrogen patches.

RFK Jr's claims were inaccurate. However, the HHS website was updated to match the inaccurate information provided by RFK Jr.

Why the 'mad scramble' to fill hormone therapy prescriptions for menopause

Doctors who prescribe hormone therapy to manage menopausal symptoms report rolling shortages and delays, which are in part due to rising demand. It's a reversal from the early 2000s, when the treatment fell sharply out of favor.

Surprisingly, the Trump Administration has not blamed the shortage on trans people or drag queens, but give them time to blame it all on DEI.

Anyone working in a hospital in 2021 will tell you that they saw first-hand how the vaccines brought down the census of COVID patients, especially COVID patients who were acutely ill.

The latest studies are indicating that there was a 50% reduction in emergency room visits and hospitalizations after mass immunization began.

But RFK Jr's anti-vaxxers in the HHS don't want the documentation and proof to be published.

US CDC delays publishing report showing COVID vaccine benefits, WaPo reports

The acting director of the Centers for Disease ‌Control and Prevention has delayed publication of a CDC report showing the COVID-19 vaccine cut the likelihood of emergency department visits and hospitalizations for healthy adults last winter by about half, the Washington Post ‌reported on Thursday, citing scientists familiar with the decision.

Reuters could not immediately verify the report. Department of Health and Human Services did not immediately respond to request for comment.

It is highly unusual for the director (or "acting director") of the CDC to micromanage publication of research results by the CDC.

Unsurprised.

RFK is a nihilist Malthusian. And of course, justifying it by building natural immunity through natural selection.

But of course, his own kids are vaxxed along with his wife.

Nearly 20 years ago, in the H&W forum there was a back-and-forth about a health recommendation. I remember posting a CDC recommendation and saying, "The CDC said that these are the facts and these are the recommendations". This was based upon a reputation of an agency founded 50 years before that, 20 years ago, was the gold standard for public health.

The CDC was founded after World War II because the US government realized that having an unhealthy public also meant having an unhealthy pool of soldiers. Military readiness was dependent upon improving public health.

In one year, that reputation has been destroyed. I now point people to other sources - Cleveland Clinic, Mayo, UpToDate... The information the CDC website is subject to political influence and corruption. The data is being filtered through a political lens. It is no longer a reliable source.
