Can you do pushups, situps, or jumping jacks? Could you lift bottles of soda in lieu of weights? Who does the grocery shopping?

I would assume even a few situps and pushups are better than none. The more you do it, the better your body will get at it.

As far as the grocery shopping, can you buy a bag of Sun Chips and pay for them yourself? I realize you don't have a job, but do you have any income?

Can you do jumping jacks outside?

Hang in there! At least you're thinking of losing weight!

Your situation does sound shitty. I would keep focused on getting a job and do what little you can to stay healthy in the meantime.

It sounds like we have a fair amount in common, so I'll probably message you at some point.

Good luck!

It's the carbs. Pasta and bread will pack on the pounds. Try smaller portions (four slices of bread is a bit much). The walking is good, try doing the four miles a little faster each day. Good luck, I know how hard it is to lose weight and keep it off.

There's so many things here that you can do to change things.

Your diet: The human body has evolved to tolerate feast / famine cycles. Think of the old days when droughts would wipe out food supplies. When we're getting fed on a regular basis, our bodies rev up for work. When we're not getting fed on a regular basis, our bodies slow down and store fat. Your body is storing fat because you're eating one huge meal a day. You would be much better off eating three proportional smaller (and healthier) meals. Snacks are only necessarily if you're working out and need the calories- and in that case, the snacks should be planned and high in protein and low in carbs.

Prepared foods and curly fries are a treat. They are not a meal. If you want to loose weight, you're going to have to plan your meals. It sounds like you're eating what a teenager would eat. At 34, you have to be a little more structured about meal planning. And you have to trim the carbs and fried foods.

Activity level: Get out of bed, even if you're not working. Do volunteer work. There are some great charities out there like Habitat for Humanity where you will do physical labor, you'll learn some skills you can use and you'll meet people. As long as you continue to sleep in, you're not going to feel good and your body is just going to be in fat storage mode.

The work around the house that you did is good exercise. But you have to exercise daily- even if it is just a 20-30 minute walk in the morning and in the evening.

Working out: From a purist standpoint, you don't need a gym or weights to workout. You can walk (which you're doing). You can run at your local jogging trail or high school track for free.

But I'm always puzzled when I hear people say they can't afford a gym. Places like the YMCA have reduced fee memberships that are as cheap as $20 a month for a single person. There's nothing magical about going to a gym but it's like a workplace- you go there for a reason, you focus on it for an hour and you get it done. If you have a workout buddy, there's a social aspect to it but going to the gym is a time when you focus on yourself. And unless you are very disciplined, it's very hard to devote an hour of your day to yourself without that kind of structure.

Here is steo 1 for successful weight loss:

1. Eliminate sugar (including fruit juices and sports drinks) and all foods that contain flour.

More steps are at:

You don't have to follow all of them, but do your best. Step 1 is the most important one.

Insanity Workout, no weights needed. You will lose fat and get slight definition.

i agree the carbohydrates are likely what is doing you in plus not much exercise. you are also eating too late in the day and too large of a meal. you need to get up earlier. since you are not working i assume there is no reason you can't get up at 7 or 8? have a small meal. maybe 2-3 slices of baccon or something like that. cut out all that bread. eat a small lunch and a small dinner. then IF you snack later in the evening don't have somethink with a lot of carbs in them. if you are eating much sugar cut that out too. i dropped 35 pounds in about 6 months by keeping my carbs down to at least 30 grams per day. some days i only had 20 grams. but i never lifted a finger more than i normally did during the day. now i am walking but that is not what helped me lose the weight. i walk for 1.5 hours a day. my chin and neck were similar problem areas for me. that has mostly gone away now. try it you can do it!

OK, I'm probably going to come off as a jerk by saying this, but why is it that every time you respond to someone's suggestion, your response is "Well, that would be great, but I can't because blah blah blah?" Are you looking to change? Or are you looking for someone to say "You don't have to do anything! Just close your eyes really tight and WISH the weight away!?"

I'm 26 years old. I always had a small build, never was huge into sports or hitting the weight room... because of that, I never actively engaged in my health & working out because I felt I didn't need to, because I wasn't overweight.

I lost my job in mid 2009.... at my age I was making a low six figure salary. I was on top of the world... but then I lost my job! I went on unemployment and by the end of the first week, I decided I needed to start changing things that I could control, and not let my situation control me. I went back to a job I had in college, but at full-time hours. It sucked going from making upwards of $120,000 a year just out of college to only making $40,000 a year, but it was better than collecting the unemployment checks. I the signed up at a local gym. I began controlling my diet... no more pop, no more sugary foods, whole grain pasta instead of regular pasta when I wanted it (and no, the price difference isn't that huge)... those Tyson Chicken strips? Bake them in the oven, along with the fries, instead of microwaving them or deep-frying them. Drink plenty of water. When you go walking around the neighborhood, throw a gallon of water in a backpack and use that as added weight for the walk.

I changed my attitude about the situation I was in, and made changes. I've bulked up, I feel better about myself. If you think there's a magical solution to all the problems, there's not. Own your situation, don't let the situation own you, and you'll get out of it.
