Oh, by all means let's take out all the offensive words.

After all, the last thing we'd want to teach our up and coming students is how to reason and think for themselves. It's best to whitewash history altogether and protect them from the realities of the past.

What could lead to a more informed and well balanced child than the re-writing of the history of their country ? It's worked well so far...

Now remember, kids: Columbus "discovered" America and all the pilgrims sat down with the "native Americans" for a big Thanksgiving day feast.

That was shortly before George Washington never told a lie and Abe Lincoln walked 10 miles to return a nickle.

And now a word from Viacom...

Oh, Lord. Belamy and Sloppy having a conversation. This should be good.

Why are there so many volatile topics like this - attempting to rile people's emotions?

Nowadays news (in the 24 hour news channel era) is not news -- just an attempt to get ratings by stirring shit up and get people angry.

That said--
censorship, especially regarding classic literature, is -- well, dumb.

yeah DUMBASSES

ans univesetiys give um bits paper go figure

I also agree with this. It's the CHILDREN part that bothers me more than the word.

Maybe it's just me, but I've read a few books for middle and high school with offensive words and adult situations. It doesn't mean that I've grown to use such words everyday. I'd say when you're in high school and you read this literature, you'd be mature enough to read it and not start flaming those words down the hall. Then again, my mind's drifting from reality.

I say leave it alone, but what's done is done.

So the stupid prudish topic of this thread would be giving way to a better direction, until the trimmers come around to screw it again.

I was relieved to find a fairly serious content here, and prepared for the worst. I am an out and out antiracist. Editing Mark Twain for the twenty-first century is appropriate for use with school children.

You contradict yourself: editing Mark Twain like this IS racist.

It also destroys any value the book has in helping people understand the times, and to a degree destroys the story. There's a huge cultural content to "nigger" that is tossed in the trash by replacing it with "slave".

Might as well rape a girl to make her a better wife.

Where are the smilies for wiping ass or puking.#-o

Actually, A dunce cap and thumb up the ass would work:grrr:

I dont like the word and dont like it used for shock value either.

You should talk about the thread topic.

Mark Twain is overrated. Why read a hyped dead man's work if you can go out and learn more about life that way.

What -- you own a time machine?

No kidding. When it comes to mandatory classroom reading, the word nigger is just as negative as faggot and has no place in our schools. Sure teach them about racist and homophobic slangs but don't force kids to read books that use the terms in an uninformative context.

So what you're saying is to turn the entire reading of history into an "uninformative context".

This book should be read in grade school, as it is. Among other things, it's an excellent tool for teaching people that words do not mean what you think they mean. Just that lesson, that words can mean something different to someone else, would make a big dent in the cultural divide in the country.

It was still a slur, as it was used to denote also that they were a lower class, including not as bright and deserving of their status. It may have originated neutral, but it quickly became an insult.

That said, Huck himself uses almost like kids today do, with no insult intended and just as a way to refer to a group of people.

RG

Same lesson as above, extended. The sound is not the meaning.

And when you suck the meaning out of a book and replace it with something sharply different, you destroy the book.

Hard-up has touched on some important issues concerning the contemporary state of educational standards, and I'd like to present a thought to help solidify his wonderful thesis, if I may...

First off: My impression of Jeff Foxworthy!

His material is tired and dated and I'm pretty sure he's only in it for the money now -- he's a "has-been" "washed-up" "sell-out!"

That's the IMPRESSION I GET anyways! My impression of jeff foxworthy....

moving on...and we're here:gogirl:.......ready?

ATTENTION: THIS IS NOT A JOKE!

Time's up! put your pencils down....
Gives the saying 'he only had an 8th grade education' a whole new meaning, doesn't it?!

Also shows you how poor our education system has become and, NO, I don't have the answers! I'm still stumped on that orthography shit! WTF?

You're right, language is constantly changing, but the word nigger hasn't changed enough in meaning yet in order to make it required reading for school children. Maybe one day when it's no longer used as a derogatory slang I'll feel differently, but it's not okay when racism is alive and well and a book which kids read uses the word to passively describe black people.
.

So you'll keep an anti-racist novel from kids just because it has a word which offends you.

An approach like that destroys education by gutting it.
