TO study the way things were, you don't listen to someone tick off points and say, "These are the way things were", you find a piece of literature that is entertaining, even gripping, and portrays the way things were.
THe only value of Huckleberry Finn in schools is that it shows the way things were.Change it, it's worthless for looking at history, and rendered worthless as a piece of literature.

I would dearly love to find a novel as well written and as pointed about how stupid it was (and remains) to treat gays as second-class (or lower). Brokeback Mountain did a touch of that, which is the only reason it was much of a movie at all. Take the gays out of Brokeback, you kill the story. Take the nigger out of Finn, it does the same.

As for the edited version of Huck Finn, I think that the book should be taught in its original version to children who are old enough to engage in a discussion about the dangers of racism and racist language. Abridged editions for very young readers (i.e. paraphrased editions) probably shouldn't include racist language because very young children have difficulty distinguishing between appropriate and inappropriate language.

As a paki, I think the original book with the word nigger is ok for me. Children should be guarded from words they don't know its meaning to. As we become adults, important classic works like Finn do serve an educational purpose to nurture us in the right direction. If as an adult, you feel you cannot have the word there, you are no different from a child.
