  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Higgs Boson may have been found.

Anyone who still not quite sure what a higgs boson is,
here is a simple explanation:

What the fuck?

Why was water mentioned? Are we totally submerged by "Higs Boson"? Or, I'm sorry, "The Higgs Field" ? Is that why that useless tank of water was mentioned and showed?

What does this have to do with the building blocks of the universe?

I thought I was here for this. I was wrong.

Question:
Are we floating in the higgs boson right now?
And the Universe/galaxies also floating in the higgs boson ?

Why do you think that an electron is repulsed by another but attracted by a proton ? Or that both North side magnetic matter repulse each other but North/South is attracted ? An electron and a proton both are 'hanging' out in void. So ? They 'exchange' information by the way of a messenger, a photon. So a proton 'knows' there is an electron at a certain distance and is 'attracted'.
So the Higgs boson is thought as the messenger for mass.
Another way to see this (as a particle is also a wave of energy), is that an electron creates a certain electromagnetic field that interact with a proton is a certain way that makes the proton attracted to it. Same thing for a Higgs field.

Fair point.

On the other hand, maybe they really should stop calling it the god particle. After all, it is now proven that it exists

By the way, this is Peter Higgs - just when the find was announced. Back in the day, the CERN rejected his original paper. It sounded too ridiculous ;)

This explains everything. CHARM is to TOP what STRANGE is to BOTTOM.....

I really must take physics.

I haven't heard or seen any real discussion on what effects or impacts, if any, this may have on religion. I'm curious about that.

Within a few years, the major religions will be saying this was always the case, and it was revealed to them in psalm number....or sura number....or that it was written on another golden plate whose contents were only just now decrypted by shouting into a magic hat

How will this newly-gained knowledge be put to use? It affects shapes and masses and viscosity?

My personal feeling is both science and religion are the search for the truth. Science has now given us new knowledge and truth about God created the universe and what makes it work. Religion should celebrate.

There really shouldn't be any - or any big - effect on religion with this discovery.

Even calling it the "God" particle is a complete misnomer.

The actually working name of this particle was "GODDAMN" particle because no one could find it it remained so hypothetical and elusive.

It was bastardized to "God Particle" to sell books.

Even Peter Higgs found the so-called catchier misnomer to be offensive. It was never intended to be a search for anything "God" related or with religious implications.

And really, any discovery of the universe - even revelations within the understanding of one's own self - could have applied to it something "God" or spiritual if one so wanted.

But if anything, a greater understanding of the magnificence and mystery of the universe should only cause more sweasome wonder. And for some, that will always remain scientific while for others that will always reenforce their belief in God or a creator (of even that goddamn particle).
