Homophobe Anita Bryant gets it in the face

Re: A Blast From The Past - Good Old Anita Bryant

I hope the movie focuses a lot on how cold and lonely her life turned out after she was a spokesperson for hate.

Re: A Blast From The Past - Good Old Anita Bryant

I'd love to know whatever happened with her IRS problems? I almost forgot to mention that "Sex And The City" creator Darren Starr will be directing this movie. How ironic is that! Paybacks can be such a bitch!!

Re: A Blast From The Past - Good Old Anita Bryant

I think I also read that there was some speculation that her husband of the time was gay and that her inability to "cure" him was partly what drove her. In addition to getting the Miami-Dade civil rights ordinance repealed, she also traveled to California to lend her support to the cruel "Briggs Initiative", a hateful, vile law that would have MANDATED the firing of any gay teacher. I'd like to know whatever happened to her relationship with her gay son? Is her son, in fact, gay? Does anyone out there know anything about that? I'm glad that bitch lost her 30 room house, gay husband, money, carreer, etc. She TOTALLY deserves any bit of HELL that comes her way! Marcia Cross as Anita Bryant? What do you think? One other thing. She apparantly is very active in the "Ex-gay" movement. Just come to Jesus, stick your tongue in Anita's Holy Cooter, and you too can be "cured" of being gay. And if that doesn't work, there's always Exorcism.

Re: A Blast From The Past - Good Old Anita Bryant

I've watched that dreadful cunt get pied so many times over the last 10 years (I saw "Before Stonewall" for the first time in 2000 on PBS during June). It lets me know that things are gonna be alright. :)

Re: A Blast From The Past - Good Old Anita Bryant

Wikipedia has an extensive entry on her. About her husband they say:

<<Her marriage to Bob Green failed at that time, and in 1980 she divorced him, citing emotional abusiveness and latent suicidal thoughts. Green refuses to accept this, given that his fundamentalist religious beliefs do not recognize civil divorce and that she is "still" his wife "in God's eyes."

Some fundamentalist audiences and venues shunned her after her divorce. As she was no longer invited to appear at their events, she lost another major source of income. With her four children, she moved from Miami to Selma, Alabama, and later to Atlanta, Georgia. In a 1980 Ladies Home Journal article she said, "The church needs to wake up and find some way to cope with divorce and women's problems." She also expressed some sympathy for feminist aspirations, given her own experiences of emotional abuse within her previous marriage.>>

Whack Jobs all of them. Too bad their whackness can so negatively affect the lives of others.

Re: A Blast From The Past - Good Old Anita Bryant

Good Old Anita Bryant ... old yes, good ... never was never will be. Actually I was hoping they'd hire Harvey Fierstein to write the script and to play the title role ... it would certainly be more entertaining than anything Anita Bryant ever did.

And by the way - no gay son and her husband wasn't gay he was a full time philander who wanted a subservient wife who asked no questions.

Re: A Blast From The Past - Good Old Anita Bryant

I might have confused her with Phyllis Schafly, or whatever the hell her last name was. She had or has a gay son. And she is another right wing homophobe. Her son is a gay "uncle Tom" I'm told. About the screenplay. I'd personally like to see Dustin Lance Black write it. I thought he did a nice job with "Milk". The guy who wrote the screenplay to that crappy movie "Runaway" is going to penn the script on this one. Let's hope he does a better job. I hope this has the same level of quality that "Milk" had. And let's hope they don't try to make that homophobic cunt sympathetic. She is 70 now. I wonder what she thinks of all this.

Re: A Blast From The Past - Good Old Anita Bryant

I remember being in Broward Co during her sick campaign and yes she was a piece of work. However she really did help the gay community organize and become the proud community we are today.

There was a big gay rally in Fort Lauderddale at a place called the Poop Deck at the Marlin Beach hotel

I sure hope the rally was in support of the gay community and not her.

Re: A Blast From The Past - Good Old Anita Bryant

The orange juice queen how her lost her crown.

Re: A Blast From The Past - Good Old Anita Bryant

Getting back to the question of Who should play her? Any suggsetions. Like I said before, I think Mariska Hargitay looks like her. I could see her playing the role. Who else? Who would you like to see as Anita Bryant?

Re: A Blast From The Past - Good Old Anita Bryant

I think that there are several actresses who could play her....but I think they should lip-synch the singing...She had a distinct voice...

Squeeze a fruit for Anita.....

Re: A Blast From The Past - Good Old Anita Bryant

I watched another video of hers on Youtube. It was called "The Downfall Of Anita Bryant". She looks like she could be Mariska Hargitay's mother. Their features are very similar. Can anyone out there find and put pictures of the two woman side by side. I'd like to do a comparison, but I'm not very tech savy when it comes those things. What can I say? I'm a dinosaur with stuff like that.

She isn't. If there is any resemblance between the two, it is purely coincidental.

Anita, who was married to Miami disc jockey Bob Green at the time (in the 60s) raised 4 children: Robert Green Jr. (Bobby, adopted), Gloria Green, and twins Billy and Barbara Green.

Something I've never noticed before. Check out the 'X' in the placard. Anyone know why it is 'dropped'? It must have some meaning:

Re: A Blast From The Past - Good Old Anita Bryant

A candidate to play her is the anti gay and anti masturbation person. Christien O'Donnell.

Re: A Blast From The Past - Good Old Anita Bryant

I remember seeing this in the documentry The Life And Times Of Harvey Milk. Bitch got everything she deserved.

So thankful for this thread. Had a bad day today... so it makes it better watching this hateful cunt get pied. :)

You misunderstand something. I never said that she WAS Mariska Hargitay's mother. I just said that she LOOKS LIKE SHE COULD BE. I know for a fact that Mariska's real mother was Jayne Mansfield. When I say that someone only LOOKS like they could be related to someone, that only means that they could pass for Mother and Daughter, not that they actually are. As for casting the role, an actress only needs to give a good performance, physically look like her and be more or less the right age (late 30's to 40's). The singing can be dubbed. She absolutely does NOT need to subscribe to the fucked up, reactionary ideology of Anita. My suggestion was in NO WAY a reflection of what I suppose Mariska Hargitay's politics to be. Look at it this way. If you were casting the part of Hitler, you just need a short, pudgy, good actor with a goofy, little mustache, NOT an actual bigoted nazi. As for the x in the placard, I've often noticed that too. I have no idea what she's trying to say with that. I have NO doubt that Mariska is very gay friendly. I just think she's a good actress with an uncanny resemblance. Just give her the right hair color and style and VIOLA! The bitch is back!

No, you didn't, but you didn't say that she wasn't, either. By your post, it read as though you wanted to do a side-by-side comparison to see if the possibility was there.

Re: A Blast From The Past - Good Old Anita Bryant

I should have made it more clear that the side-by-side comparison was to see how Mariska would fare physically as Anita Bryant. Anita had a certain distinctive look. Whoever does play her should look as close as possible to the real one. The actress that has always come immediately to mind was Mariska. I just would like a side by side comparison so others could weigh in on the physical resemblance.

Re: A Blast From The Past - Good Old Anita Bryant

We in the UK had our own tamer version of this witch, called Mary Whitehouse. A fundamentalist Christian who wanted us to be a theocracy (ruled by priests) - not the dear old all-inclusive, wishy-washy Church of England, of course, but the hard-line fundamentalist evengelical bigots who so dominate the Christian right in the USA, and infect our own country. Of course, she also rejected evolution. She did some damage, but fortunately the sensible, rational majority prevented her from getting too many restrictive laws on the statute book.
Why do these people confuse the right to believe whatever nonsense they like with the right to have the belief itself accepted and approved of? Anyone is entitled to sincerely belive the earth is flat, but I'm equally entitled to tell them they're fools. This example always annoys and embarrases creationists stupid enough to believe that the Earth is the fixed centre of the universe, with everything else orbiting it.
Near the end of her life Whitehouse moderated her anti-gay views (everyone is created 100% heterosexual, so if you say you're gay you must have chosen to be a deviant), but by then she'd done the damage.
