Homophobia from within the LGBT community

At a certain point though...who of us really pay any attention to what Refuji, Kane or Grimshaw really think about homos.

They are just proof that homophobia within the LGBT community thrives.

Thank God there are people like Dan Savage and a whole lot of others who are trying to send a positive message to young gay kids.

Maybe it would change things if some of the really strong, out black celebs and social leaders were to create a campaign that would be directed at the black community...because apparently white people have no credibility when it comes to encouraging kids of colour to find inner strength, to accept themselves and to live a happy life as a homo.

Dan Savage is the last person who should have been picked for an anti-bullying PSA campaign as he himself is a bully towards anyone he does not like. There was a waitress or bartender in Seattle who someone did not tip and who received a nasty note for a large bill. Savage claimed that some guy was the person who did this and called for people to publically harass him and his family in his 'advice column' which they did as his personal address and phone number were leaked. It turns out that the guy that was harassed was not the person who did this at all.

This is just one of the many ways that Savage is a hypocrite and bully. Also, for decades he would write hate speech against people who are bisexual and transgender. When Prop 8 in CA passed he went on a racist rant completely blaming black people for it being voted in.

He and his "husband" which is an oxymoron considering he's convinced that no two gay men, bisexual men, or a gay and bisexual man in a relationship together can ever be monogamous were picked as grand marshals for NYC's LGBT pride parade when neither of them have actually done anything to help LGBT people or the LGBT community/at risk youth, and they are narcissists that only care about themselves.

"It gets better" has been shown to be a failure, and it actually ignores LGBT and at risk youth's issues and tells them some sugar coated BS phrase that everyone already knows, and there are a large number of people who made IGB videos and who later did kill themselves.

I guess not everyone agrees with your take on Dan savage, but I respect the concerns you have with him. In the past even he admits that he ahs not been either the easiest or nicest person....but his campaign was somewhat of an apotheosis for him as I understand it.
If he has continued bullying and harassing gay and trans or other innocent, non-homophobic people since he created IGB, then you are absolutely right. He is a hypocrite who deserves to be called out on his personal behaviour.

The message of hope, though, backed up by examples of homos who have found ways to make it through to independent adulthood, may still do may good than harm, so I'm not calling it a failure because we have no actual data on the number of people it helped....or all the circumstances of the suicides you refer to.

I certainly don't find anywhere where the campaign has been certified to be a failure and part of the message has been encouraging LGBT kids to reach out and seek some of the counselling support in the community instead of living walled up in anguished silence.

Do you have the source for the large numbers of people who made IGB videos who later killed themselves? Obviously someone must have studied it and quantified it but my own search didn't turn up the paper. I think it would be very interesting to know more about this.

There are some trans people who use it as a slur towards women and men who are not trans, like how "Die cis scum" gets posted on sites like reddit and tumblr and used in YouTube videos.

I find it funny when trans people and trans activists try to use it as a slur.

I think it's funny when people protest the label "cis."

I ignore the word "cis". And it does seem to be going away.

I'm not beating up on anybody. I'm just calling it for how I see it. Do you know how many times I've seen supposed gay outlets basically be centered around white men like they are the only people that can be gay. It's very angering. Even in gay porn, that shit is present. They literally exclude anybody who isn't white and marks them down as a fetish porn. Nobody is saying that folks have to have sex with whoever but respect should be given. I hate when I see people flipping the racism issue within the gay community to it being about white people having sex with nonwhites as if that's supposed to address the real problem. Like someone can't be prejudiced and still have sex with the someone of the group they are prejudiced against-fetishizing and etc. It makes no sense for folks to be riding the coat tails of black gay people or black people for that matter who actually have contributed so much for gay rights but then we get dissed by the same people who piggybacked off of us for the longest. If you see the narratives that these gay rights organizations and etc present, you would think no gay black people or any nonwhite gay people exists or non whites havent atributed anything. We do matter when it comes to cultural influences and homophobia which is almost usually the whole "black people are homophobic" bullshit that the gay community loves to swing created by some racist losers.

Thinking that "equality" equates with "eliminating prejudice" could only come from the lips of one who does not have to worry himself with that concern. Its very real for many of us Black men.
And as far as 'losing sympathy', that is a pretty loaded comment. Is someone needing to supplicate themselves because the point of view is too "in-your-face"? Sympathy was not got us (gays) our rights, either. It was very in-your-face groups such as Act Up that pressured the government. So, no sympathy is needed to present a truth. Just the truth.

Heteronormativity needs to resisted by GLBTIQ media and clubs. Unfortunately some is still reflected.

What is the image that automatically comes to mind as two gay male or two lesbians as a couple? Teenage-30 year old whites with educated-flat accents from certain parts of a country/city (E.G West End areas of London, Manhattan in NYC, West Hollywood in L.A) that are middle-class, live in a fancy apartment (that looks like a mansion to most people!) and drives/rides a big 4-wheel drive car.

Even I can't get it out of my mind. Stereotypes are filtered down in the GLBTIQ media and it flows to the GLBTIQ community with only small dents made. What about non-white gay men? What about butch lesbians? What about Drag Queens (without the implication they're embarrassing & avoided by most people in the room/club!)?
