PHILADELPHIA, Mar. 23 /Standard Newswire/ -- According to two researchers, the largest random sex survey ever conducted has reported that only 1.4% of adults engaged in homosexual behavior. Analyzing a 2003 Canadian Community survey of 121,300 adults, Drs. Paul and Kirk Cameron told attendees of the Eastern Psychological Association Convention that 2% of 18-44 year olds, 1% of 50 year olds, and only a third of a percent of subjects 60+ considered themselves homosexual. Thus homosexual activity was much more common among younger adults.

What happened to the older homosexuals? "Some may have ceased to be sexually active," said Paul Cameron, "or they may have died. Recent reports from Scandinavia indicate that the life expectancy of homosexuals is 20+ years shorter than that of heterosexuals."

Among other questions (read to respondent by interviewer), the Canadian study asked:

"Do you consider yourself to be: heterosexual? (sexual relations with people of the opposite sex)/ homosexual, that is lesbian or gay? (sexual relations with people of your own sex)/ bisexual? (sexual relations with people of both sexes)."

"No one can say that this statistic is 'the bedrock truth,'" Paul Cameron said, "but even with attempts to increase the percentage of active homosexuals – which Statistics Canada appears to have done by reporting only the results of those under the age of 60 – the 1.4% is a figure that has to be taken very seriously.

"The US government survey of 12, 381 adults in 1996, reported that 1.3% of men and 1.1% of women under the age of 60 said they'd had homosexual sex in the last 12 months. It also found few older homosexuals. The oldest male who engaged in homosexuality was 54 and the oldest female+ 49. So it appears that homosexuality is a young person's activity – one that may contribute to an early death."

Paul Cameron, Ph.D. & Kirk Cameron, Ph.D., presented "Federal Distortion Of The Homosexual Footprint." Paul Cameron, a reviewer for the British Medical Journal, the Canadian Medical Association Journal, and the Postgraduate Medical Journal, has published over 40 scientific articles on homosexuality. The EPA is the oldest regional Psychological Association in the United States. At its Philadelphia convention members presented the latest advances in scientific work to colleagues.

 I dunno sounds like bullshit to me... what do u think?

Dr. Kirk Cameron?? No relation to the Left Behind nutwad, I'm sure.

I'd be interested in seeing their samples and studying their methodologies before I took them very seriously. Any study that purports to debunk a "Federal Distortion" should be looked at closely... the very phrase trips my Conspiracy Theorist switch.

But I am ready to believe that only 2% of people are out and willing to admit to anybody who comes along that they're gay. And of course gays have shorter recorded lifespans, and would represent a smaller proportion in a third-millenium sample: are these people not aware that the AIDS epidemic wiped out huge portions of the gay population twenty years ago? Ah, duh.

The way I see you have two choices:

1) If you're gay, you're going to die quicker.

2) You have a lot of people that think that they are gay, but find out later that they are straight.

Personally, I prefer #2...

Plus the fact if the question was have you engaged in sex with another man in the last 12 months I would be obliged to answer no. There you are I am no longer included in the statistics.

Anyway we all know that there is a date limit on being homosexual. Over 50yrs and you don't count anymore.;)

Crap.

I'm studying Education Psychology right now and sexual orientation is mentioned within the text. According to recent studies by Savin-Williams & Diamond, 2004; Steinberg, 2005, 4% of adolescents identify themselves as gay or bisexual while that number increases to 8% at adulthood. I round that figure up to 10% for all the Ted Haggards out there.

maybe that older people are twice as prone to be in the closet?

(this report is dubious to say the least, but in the end, who cares how many of us there are? We deserve to be equal, dont' we?)

Oh... and people are all getting on me for that whole "Label" thing.

"OH... I don't like lables.... labels are for clothes.... WHAAAA"

Yeah, until you say "I don't want to be labeled" and are put in the "straight" column.

Man, I'm going to need a bigger shovel

Hotwet:

It's always important to examine your sources.

Paul Cameron has been a known homophobe tied in with Christian interests since the 1980s.

Moreover, that survey was conducted over the phone. How many people are going to tell a complete stranger their sexual orientation over the phone?

It's bullshit.

Thanks for that warning. I Googled and found this little significant detail.

In 1985, the American Sociological Association (ASA) adopted a resolution which asserted that "Dr. Paul Cameron has consistently misinterpreted and misrepresented sociological research on sexuality, homosexuality, and lesbianism" and noted that "Dr. Paul Cameron has repeatedly campaigned for the abrogation of the civil rights of lesbians and gay men, substantiating his call on the basis of his distorted interpretation of this research."7 The resolution formally charged an ASA committee with the task of "critically evaluating and publicly responding to the work of Dr. Paul Cameron."

Penn and Teller had a good episode about phone surveys where the framing of the questions were important to get a positive or a negative result. It seems they framed the question to get the result that they wanted, so this survey might be very flawed.

I've been taking my own survey -- based not on what people tell me but on how they actually behave in bedrooms, hotel rooms, johns, baths, clubs, bars, locker rooms, porno theaters, peepshows, parks and other scientifically chosen locations.

The results of my research: The Camerons don't know what the f**k they're talking about.

Why dont we start our very own survey to disapprove this report? JUB is a well known gay forum/site/porn. We can ask the administrators to classify how many people visiting the site are gay, bi, or whatever. Im sure they would know.

Homosexuals have a 20+ years shorter life span? WTF is that about?

^ You must admit, we do, almost habitually, "live fast and die young." We get murdered rather more frequently than your Average Joe, too. And, as I pointed out above, the AIDS epidemic of the 80s cut a wide swathe through the community, so there are a lot fewer older gays than there would have been without it.

If you took a similar "blind" sample in, say, 1950, you would have found that the average life-span of American males was rather shorter than females by fifty or sixty years, simply because absolute piles of men got killed in the War and women mostly didn't.

It's so obvious that ALL people are gay or at least have homosexual tendancies; 'straight' people are just in denial.

How many ways do they want it? First, there is a homosexual agenda, second gays are destroying Western civilization, third, gay marriage would destroy families, and now all of this power stems from less than 2% of the population! Assault on all fronts is what I say. It seems there is an awful lot of wasted energy on less than 2%. What assholes!

To me, it seems obvious that surveys on homosexuality ALWAYS underreport our numbers. Just look around here: how many gays are dealing with internal conflict over their orientation and external pressure to conform to straight norms? And how many people in that kind of distress are going to fess up to a stranger?

Oh, and by the "have you had sex recently?" criterion, I don't count as gay either. Oh well...

That's what i'm sayin'. If there's a problem they're quick to blame it on the gay people. Same thing they did back in the 60's with blacks, now they've just transfered it to gays. In 30 years we'll be just as free as them; which means we'll be the abused minority that's just above being tolerated. It must suck to be both gay and black in the USA.

These types of surveys are biased anyways. Everyone knows what people will and will not talk about. Just another brick in the wall to further seperate homos and heteros.

Definition:

The problem of definition. Much hinges on how the researcher defines "gay", and how his subjects perceive his questions. Is the definition based on sexual activity, if so, how frequent must a subject engage in same-sex activity, before he is classified as gay? And what does "sexual activity" or "sexual relations" mean? Different people have quite different ideas of what constitutes sex, and surveys often trip over this issue. Some people have sexual relations exclusively with same-sex or opposite-sex partners, but many, in different phases of their lives, may swing various ways. How does one classify these subjects? Some surveys have asked respondents if they identified as "gay". But many people who engage in same-sex activity, or who feel attracted to persons of the same sex, do not identify as gay. Many others may be attracted to the same sex, but for lack of opportunity or whatever reason, do not act on it.

My Favorite Quote:

"It's better to be black than gay because when you're black you don't have to tell your mother.” ~ Charles Pierce, 1980
