Pfft... Meth as been around as long as I have been gay. The movement to get rid of the bathhouses coincides with studies of behaviors, not the behaviors.

There's speed and then there's crystal meth.
As far as I know, crystal meth wasn't around during the beginning of the AIDS crisis when bathhouses were closed in the eighties - which I assume happened here.

It was around and in use, although most people shot it up at that point, hence the HIV issue and the movement to stop its use associated with places where anonymous sex is most likely to occur.
