  • Hi Guest - Did you know?

How did you find phys ed or gym class in high school? Fun or traumatic?

Neither fun nor traumatic. PE at school was tedious and completely uninspiring. I hated it and have had absolutely no interest in playing or watching sport ever since.

Grade school: I refused to take part, but to move on I had to so my mother came during PE time and we did one on one. For 6th grade I did do a few things, but I refused to put in any effort.

Middle school: For middle school I was in private school and I lived on a farm with many animals. I got credit for taking care of the animals. Chasing pig, etc. and bucking hay was a decent work out.

High School: For high school I once again refused to take part in PE, but to graduate I have to do something. I was made a student teacher in the DLC (the highly disabled kids class) during their PE classes and I went and helped them. I also became a Special Olympics coach during that time. Mostly I just watched the other kids so they would not wonder off and get hurt, but I also played a bit of games with them.

I now realize I refused because I hate people paying attention to me. It makes me self conscious and really self conscious if I was attracted to them. So for me the work arounds worked, but it would have been hell without the work arounds and I would have dropped out.

Definitely the same for me. I am very self conscious so I tried to get out of PE many times. The annoying part is when I had to run laps in front of everyone just because I was late for class. Very embarrassing.

For 6th grade Mr. Lemon made me do laps, but I refused to run so I walked. I could tell it made him mad, but as a fat kid there was no way I could run a mile.

PE can really be hell for certain kids for a lot of reasons. PE should be rethought out and make it better and fun for all.

I quite agree. It isn’t very friendly to everyone and really needs some work to change that.

We were required to take PE every year through high school graduation. Showers were open and required starting in 7th grade and if you didn't shower it would affect your grade and if you don't pass PE you don't move up to the next grade. Towels were provided to us AS WE LEFT the shower - so you walked from your locker to the shower totally naked.

The gym part was ok - I was a pretty fair athlete. Now mind you it goes Poor - Fair - Acceptable - Good - Very Good - Great. Eye hand coordination was never my strong suit. But at least I had enough friends I was never picked for the team last. It got better starting in high school was we had different units we could select so I could find something where I could at least get by as opposed to some of the team sports.

And the showers were no problem - everyone had to do it and we only had something like 8 minutes to undress - shower - dry - dress - head to the next class. Plus it helped that I was no homo. I mean sure I was turned on and had sex with guys - but it was just a phase I will soon grow out of :ROFLMAO: - so that helped me with my fear of showering in the open showers. Actually that fear is what saved me - I think I was so nervous about getting caught looking or getting excited that it kept me from getting excited!

I hated it Grammar school was ok no changing got to wear our gym clothes and have basically an out of uniform day once a week. HIGH SCHOOL SUCKED! We had a fucking pool and every goddamned time I got in that fucker Id get sick! Guys never showered right just wet their hair and got out of the showers but not showering before that water got nasty! The school painted over mold on the bottom of the pool and there were ants and spiders on the pool deck plus they loved turning the heat off and having gym first period in winter that wasnt fun! The school never cleaned the locker rooms I dont think those floors saw a mop since 1986! The smell was TREMENDOUS! AXE BODY SPRAY AND B.O. AS FAR AS YOU COULD BREATHE! The showers were always cold, there were no sinks to wash your hands after taking a shit and speaking of taking a shit the stalls had no doors This was Catholic school mind you!

There was a story about a teacher who created a program for an overweight kid that involved him walking home from school and then longer and longer distances. The teacher also helped the kid with nutrition education. Over the course of the year, he lost all his excess weight and started running and exercising...this is what PE should be, as well as playtime for the active kids who love athletics.

PE was mandatory for us, all through high school. I was lucky - suffered from heart trouble (later resolved) & had music as a school subject, so I convinced the school board to allow me to practice piano during PE periods! Missed out on seeing the other boys undress though ...

Well done you...hopefully you still play?

You play piano? I do, too. Do you have specific songs you like playing on the piano?

Hated physEd. I was not athletic and had no interest whatsoever in sports. The only good part was seeing lots of guys in jockstraps and naked. After PE a shower was required, and back in the day it was one giant communal shower. No partitions or curtains.

Hello @rareboy & @Colby-2023 . I played piano for a while after I left university (I studied music - singing & piano) and then left it. After about 20 years I've started playing again. Its hard work trying to get back on standard - give me another year, please. Favourite pieces? Probably what I'm working on a the the moment - a Beethoven sonata, an arrangement of Herold's 'Zampa' overture and a Bach Solfeggietto.

That sound super, Colby. Keep on playing. Enjoy every note !

I also did not like PE at all. I complained to my parents a lot and eventually they had trouble getting me to go to school although I still was forced to go...unlike my younger brother when he got to High School they let him "skip" school when he wasn't prepared for a test. I was also the chubby kid with no athletic abilities, no strength to climb the rope, I couldn't do the gymnastics of doing the flip over a rolled up mat. Finally I worried my parents enough that they said they would contact the family doctor to try and get me out of PE. I had lost hope in the next PE session because I still was in the class. But the principle walked in about half way thru the class, told me to go get dressed, and then talked to the coach. I spent the remainder of the semester in a study hall. WooHooooo!! The next semester in order to get my Phys-Ed credit I had to take some health class.

I like the story told above of the kid when got this Phys-Ed credit by walking, eating healthy, and losing weight. I think I would have been very motivated to do that instead of going to gym class.

I'm pretty sure I wasn't known for being the gay kid, so that didn't have anything to do with gym. Besides not being coordianted for sports, I really really didn't want to get naked around the guys. If I was a show'er and not a grow'er I may not have cared...but then I didn't want to get hard in dressing room. So being embarrassed kept that problem in check.
