How do people manage to move every few years?

I am moving at the beginning of August, and I just hate the whole process! Packing, finding places to throw away unwanted junk, things getting broken or lost, having your whole life turned upside down... then there's leaving your old house. I moved here 9 years ago, and although it's very small, and kinda junky, I have a lot of memories here. My new house is much nicer, and much bigger. I also have a nice big garage to work on my car! Not to mention a back yard with privacy.

Of course, then there's people who move into a house, paint everything that awful greige colour, install a cheap, cookie cutter Home Depot kitchen, sell at an inflated price, and then do it all over again. I can't imagine living like that. I like to live in the same place for a good long while... and I like to live in a home, not just move from one unimaginatively decorated building to the next (Yes, I'm not afraid to admit that today's home interior trends are awful... everything painted some bland, horrible greige colour, not unlike a jail or an unfinished basement... no wonder so many people are depressed!)
(By the way, my new house has some awful HGTV inspired renos; awful, fake hardwood flooring everywhere instead of carpet, boob lights, and some clown decided it was a good idea to paint the kitchen cabinets! One of the first things I'm doing is stripping that shit down and restoring the wood!)
 
The last time I moved was 13 years ago.

That reminds me. I need to clear the garage so I can park my car in there.
 
I once moved seven times in four years -- or maybe it was more, and I'm minimizing.

I now hate moving. It used to seem like an adventure, but now even the thought brings nausea.

I'm moving at my own will. Hah, my landlord might be in trouble though; almost no one will want this place for the insane price he charges for rent... and if they do, they won't want to put up with him for long... he's a fuckin idiot LOL... I could write a book on what I had to deal with over the years :lol:
 
Simple answer? I don't own much. I'll be moving again soon, so I'm looking forward to the prospect of being back in my own space.
 
I moved last month and while it was a pain it would have been even more so with a lot of things. Everything fit in a small uhaul truck but the worst part was getting the car onto the tow dolly. Next time I get help fuckit. Towing a car is a pain when you arrive in an urban area like Seattle so I unhitched as soon as possible. I had help from the apartment manager moving my stuff in. I think if I move again the sofa will not move - that was a pain to get up here. A futon would work or something you can take apart and easily get into the lift or through doors. Moving every few years might be needed depending on one's job. As I get older, moving is less attractive.
 
I lived in the same apartment for 13 years (it was rent controlled and only went up 3% a year and there were no other affordable places) . Then I moved to Florida, rented an apartment for 2 years, rented walking distance to the beach for 3 years, never went in the water once. :grrr: and I'm moving next month.

There's an aspect that makes things different: a move into your own space, freeing you from constraints that are a pain. OTOH, I once moved in with 47 other guys and it was a joy, because being alone had become a pain.

Circumstances change.
 
I have moved on average once every two years. I kinda like it. There are houses that i liked better and areas I liked better but all in all change is good. I have learned that we dont need ten gagillion material things. So when i move there is a lot less clutter, plus after I get to the new place I always go for sparse, everything gets thoroughly cleaned, including the place I am moving into.... I dunno i just kinda like it. But I am gypsy.

Forgot to mention I am moving somewhere that has a heated public pool, so that should be nice.

Also where I'm moving I can also get a pet if I want. They are also stricter as to who gets in so I shouldn't have any dirtbag neighbors. The girl that was here a few years ago was a nightmare. She was a hooker drug addict who was manic depressive. The guy next door is kind of loud, but he's not home everyday.

Sucks that you can easily pay $50K in rent in 5 years with nothing to show for it.

yeah that is the depressing part, i have one house but need to figure out where I will buy the other one and I am so tranisotyr I could have paid for three houses by now.

I am in the 98th or 99th percentile, among people who have "a lot of stuff." I was nearly a hoarder in my young adult years, but the rub is that, unlike most hoarders, a SIGNIFICANT part of my hoard has actual value (and some of it has SOMEWHAT HIGH collectors' value), so just bringing in a Dumpster would be throwing an investment - and a secure retirement - away. What I have has been shrinking slowly as I do get rid of stuff. I never tended to keep stuff that would be entirely useless, except for a short while (mostly 1987 to about 1995) when I was recording VHS tapes like a maniac, and subscribing to more stuff than I could possibly read. ALL of the publications have now been sorted into groups, with the intention of putting up year-lots on eBay [EXAMPLE: "The Advocate" gay magazine from 1997 where I might have three issues missing; "In These Times" from 1992 where I might have five issues missing - which is a left wing political magazine, etc.].

Nearly all of my "hoard" is organized, at least where it's **ENTIRELY** accessible (without having to move "other hoards" out of the way, and I can walk in my house with most of the floor clear, etc.), though a lot of it hasn't been more strictly organized such as into an alphabet, etc.

For me, moving is the most horrific and complete pain in the ass that one can possibly ever imagine.
 
For the past 5 years, my family back home in Singapore has moved so many times that I forget all the postcodes! :(

And now, after the last move, I don't have a home to return to (no rooms for me, yay! -_-)!
 
I've lived in the same house for 35 yrs., 31 with my husband before his demise. I'm still here. I'm kind of a hermit when I'm not working. You wouldn't believe the crap that has accumulated over all these years. I would like to get rid of alot of it but so much of it reminds me of him it is terribly difficult to toss it.
 
I move every 2-4 years... it's not so bad.

it's a good way to avoid accumulating too much crap.

3 moves ago, I had so much junk that I just said fuck it -- I kept whatever I could fit inside my car and hired a guy to come and clear everything else out of my apartment rather than having to rent a storage unit.

Yep and that may be the reason I will move next year unless this place is fantastic! It adds up and steals from your retirement....
