Never. Mainly for the reasons already posted. They just never work properly, and add to that if paying with credit or a gifr card the cashier needs to come swipe their card , just a hassle.

I used to.

And then I thought--wait, I'm paying premium prices at this premium grocery store and they can't hire another cashier? Screw that.

A lot of people have the same attitude, because they are rarely used.

Also what jobs will people have if everything is automated?

None.

Kinda how I feel about it.Although,I rarely shop at ''premium'' grocery stores when there is a well known chain right around the corner from my house..

I have used them in the past and I feel almost like I got caught masturbating in public. These machines put people out of work. It's bad enough we can't buy a screwdriver made in this country or speak with a customer service rep who you don't need sub titles to understand--this just adds another unsavory element into the war on working people in this country..

So,yes,I have used them. But as a rule ,I avoid them now..Besides,they're a pain in the ass..

Then avoid Fresh & Easy because they only have self check out lanes.

Why the laziness?

Use a credit card/debit card. And from my experience they always give you change.

How is being banged for $50.00 and being tasked with bagging your own groceries now labled as ''laziness?'' How about some customer service as a token act of appreciation for spending my money at their store? If this trend continues, should I soon be expected to ''help out'' on the loading dock? If someone is running a damned store,is it too much to ask that they employ someone to bag your selections-and assist you to your car if needed? One of my first jobs was as a ''bag boy.'' As 15 year old,I worked in a grocery store. My job was to bag groceries AND load them in the car of the customer. We also weren't allowed to accept tips.

For the rest of your post, what's wrong with exchanging paper currency for goods and services? Maybe the guy doesn't want his bank knowing his favorite brand of toilet paper..

I much prefer the strained conversation with the person at the checkout. I love the fakeness of it all. Besides, those self checkout things make me feel old.

I find it annoying to have my groceries weighed to determine whether I'm a thief or not. I'm not really interested in being inconvenienced by their loss prevention strategy. They malfunction, or their programming requires a staff person to pretend to investigate when all they do is swipe their card and hit "resume."

It is certainly no better than a real cashier who is free, so basically I go with whatever looks fastest on a given day.

Very naive GC if you think all the credit card company records is your charge... that is just all they put on your bill.

As an example my travel card will not purchase certain items. If I try it would reject the whole sale and if called the credit card company clerk would instruct me to remove the booze from the conveyor and the food purchase would be approved.

On the subject of bagging I have one primary criteria... what the check out clerks look like.. :p if the view is nice I may have to stand in line for a bit... if it is granny smith doing the job i proceed to the self checkout.

I've experienced that with "purchasing card" vs. "travel card." But I didn't think it was as fine-grained as item-by-item. I thought they could only make that distinction at the vendor level.

I tried self chek-out several times and had problems with the system which slowed down the process, had to wait for management to resolve the issue, so I don't bother anymore.

Yes, you're expected to harvest oranges in the field and squeeze them into a plastic bottle before you can buy the orange juice

I am pretty sure it is a requested service of the federal govt to ensure I am not using my per diem money on booze... which is really fucking odd since if I don't spend it they send me a check for the balance and with that cash I can spend anyway I so please.

The card won't work at certain vendors as well. Like a Starbucks will work if it is Starbucks but if it is a subcontracted souvenir vendor on an airport cart then it kicks the sale back. I simply pay for my hotel with the government card because I am driected to do so and put everything else on my own card.

GC I honestly dont care what they know or track about me as well. Some folks do not like that sort of thing.

As for JQ I would imagine it is NOT fear of being tracked. I will heed the CoC and not indicate what I think is the reason the money machine don't work for him.

I have used self-checkout maybe 10 times....and always had a problem that a human cashier had to come and resolve. A pain in the neck. The last two times I had problems, I just abandoned the self checkout and went to a regular cashier.

I cannot understand how the store is saving money ... they still need a cashier or attendant right there, watching the bagging and "fixing" the scanner which seems to cry "error!" every other item!

I HATE self-checkout.

I would rather stores have real express checkouts that deal only with cash and no checks, credit or debit cards or coupons!

And which do not handle tobacco and lottery ticket purchases. I cannot stand waiting while the idiot in front of me orders "5 scratch-off's, 7 lick-off's, 3 sniff-off's, and 4 jack-off's" !!) while I wait for the clerk to rip off these stupid things from rolls. My convenience store has become a casino! Enough already!

Blah ... *%%*

I don't use them often. Not because I'm too lazy to do so, or because I'm buying age-sensitive content... but because they barely fucking work! You scan one item, it scans it twice. Cashier needs to come over. You place the item in the bag, it doesn't catch its weight. Cashier needs to come over. You have something that's too large to be scanned on the belt. Cashier needs to come over.

Fuck it. Thank you. I love you all.
Dude, you had it all wrong. It's not the machine. The cashier needed an excuse to come check you out!

Not only am I too lazy and stupid to use it, I want to add that extra satisfaction minimum-wage workers get when they deal with customers.

self serve is usually empty so I always use it unless I have a $150 food shop going on.

If it is as much as I can physically carry in a hand-held basket, then it goes to self serve. Saves me time and drama. thankfully the programs and machines in my local stores are great, no issues with removing bags for larger shopping runs, or items not being registered in the bagging weight etc.

I do use them but i usually only buy alcohol and have to wait for approval so i tend to avoid them
