I use them every chance I get, because I prefer to bag my own groceries. I'm kind of finicky about how things are bagged - worked as a cashier all through high school, and now I have a little system.

It all depends where I am.
It also depends on if there is a cute guy behind the cash registers, or a grouchy, middle aged housefrau. :D

I do use them but i usually only buy alcohol and have to wait for approval so i tend to avoid them

I forget that most people live in countries where you can buy alcohol along with your groceries….

I use them EVERYTIME I grocery shop UNLESS I have a cart full of items or I am taking my mother to the grocery.

You can't?

No, in almost all provinces the sale of alcohol is restricted to either specialist stores, to provincially-owned retail "liquor commissions" or to outlets that are kind of franchised but still dependent on provincial monopolies. So you get something with the quaint name of "Liquor Control Board of Ontario" which turns out to be the world's largest purchaser of alcoholic beverages. You'd find a liquor store in the parking lot of the neighbourhood grocery store, but never actually part of the store.

I don't think "prohibition" was ever taken too seriously in Canada compared to the States, but it seems it didn't quite ever go away either!

I love them, I wish every market had them, down here only Walmart Neighborhood Market and a Winn Dixie has them. Publix and Albertsons don't. I even used them at a Home Depot before. If it's there I will use it. I wish the big Walmart near me had them too.

I cannot understand how the store is saving money ... they still need a cashier or attendant right there, watching the bagging and "fixing" the scanner which seems to cry "error!" every other item!

Because one cashier is running 4 self out lanes or more at one time.

It depends on the state too. In New Jersey you can't either. Any alcohol including wine or beer is only sold in liquor stores or bars.

And in states where you can buy it at the supermarkets, convenience stores, etc. I've only seen beer or wine, I don't think they can sell hard liquor there.

Colorado has some weird half-assed rules about alcohol. Until a few years ago, all liquor stores (and car dealerships!) were closed on Sundays. Right now, I think every chain can sell beer (if licensed), but I think they have to stop selling beer at midnight. (not sure if that law is still on the books.) Wine requires a more stringent license, and anything heavier a more stringent license still. All large chains can have one - ONE - store that sells hard alcohol under certain conditions. So the largest Target in the area (the one in Glendale) sells whiskey and vodka, but the others only sell beer.

I never use them and I avoid stores that have them. (Wal Mart & Kroger) I gave them a try and just dont like them. You have to put everything in the bagging station and if it doesn't fit you can skip that part but then the attendant has to come over and make sure I'm not stealing anything. I find them to be a giant pain in the ass and it takes me longer than if I just go through the cashier.

Not at my area Walmart. You fill the bags, wait a few seconds and you can remove them and start filling new bags.

I hate to shop. When I'm in a standard checkout line that is labeled "10 items or less" inevitably, I will get stuck behind someone that has way more than 10. Also inevitably, the shopper in front of me will pay by check, which is always slower than cash. Recently, I was shopping after 10 p.m. There was only one register open and the previous checker forgot to "code out." Subsequently, there were at least 8 customers behind me. Eventually, I got through the line, but I was so tempted to deposit my selections on the floor and just walk out.

When the self-check terminals were being installed, several of the real checkers were speculating as to whether or not the robots will replace humans. I don't think they will. Mistakes are made: register tape jams. an item won't scan. one of your items is not listed on the screen. Plus, even if the machines were infallible, not having checkers would be bad P.R.

In other words, I like self-check. :D

You really shouldn't drink. [-X

Just kidding. In my neck of the woods, if you are purchasing alcohol and the checker is under 21, someone who is not has to come over and scan the package/bottle. Also, at my regular store, there is no alcohol sold after 10 p.m. - village ordinance. A little strange.

I want the "10 items or less" lines to automatically charge an extra dollar for each item over the limit.
