Ok my bf works for the cook county office downtown Chicago. He works in an office that is mostly black. He's told me stressful work stories about how most of his employees are really lazy, and have attitudes all day long. I'm afraid of how my bf views the overall black community because of a select group of people. From what I know the cook county government offices are generally slow and alot doesn't get done as fast as it should. I'm trying to get my bf to have a more respectful view of certain minorities such as the black community.. but how do I explain the people he works with?
He goes to use the bathroom and people come take the easy work from his desk. They borrow his stapler and he gets it back and its all greasy from whatever food they were eating. I have visited his office and someone was actually painting their long nails and one was on her phone talking really loudly looking like she spent more of her paycheck on her hair and nails then anything else. This isn't true African culture.. this is culture developed by a select few blacks growing up in America. My theory is the after-effects of the confederate war and the Jim crow laws trying to keep blacks from not having as much as whites out of fear.
I really don't want my bf to become racist seeing as how his family is down south.. and how my biological dad is a member of the KKK and part of that "Sons of confederate veterans" organization.
He can't complain to his boss because the boss is black and hired his family to come work. When it comes to government jobs its not what you know... its WHO you know to get the job and doing political favors. I told Joe to just confront his co-workers but he said they will give him an attitude and call him "White Boy" and call him racist to get away with the shit they do. The way I see it.. if he becomes racist its because of how these people are acting. He does have some co-workers that are black which are a big difference but those are the minority in the office he works in.
I am trying to help him see people as equal and convinced him to vote for Obama and come with me and other friends to burn a confederate flag to put on youtube. (It was something I saw being done by the NAACP speaking out against racism and white supremacists)
How can I explain to my bf that ignorance such as theirs does not come from their skin but from how they were raised? How Can I convince him that not all blacks are like that?
