How To Tell bf Not All Blacks Are ignorant?

Ok my bf works for the cook county office downtown Chicago. He works in an office that is mostly black. He's told me stressful work stories about how most of his employees are really lazy, and have attitudes all day long. I'm afraid of how my bf views the overall black community because of a select group of people. From what I know the cook county government offices are generally slow and alot doesn't get done as fast as it should. I'm trying to get my bf to have a more respectful view of certain minorities such as the black community.. but how do I explain the people he works with?

He goes to use the bathroom and people come take the easy work from his desk. They borrow his stapler and he gets it back and its all greasy from whatever food they were eating. I have visited his office and someone was actually painting their long nails and one was on her phone talking really loudly looking like she spent more of her paycheck on her hair and nails then anything else. This isn't true African culture.. this is culture developed by a select few blacks growing up in America. My theory is the after-effects of the confederate war and the Jim crow laws trying to keep blacks from not having as much as whites out of fear.

I really don't want my bf to become racist seeing as how his family is down south.. and how my biological dad is a member of the KKK and part of that "Sons of confederate veterans" organization.



He can't complain to his boss because the boss is black and hired his family to come work. When it comes to government jobs its not what you know... its WHO you know to get the job and doing political favors. I told Joe to just confront his co-workers but he said they will give him an attitude and call him "White Boy" and call him racist to get away with the shit they do. The way I see it.. if he becomes racist its because of how these people are acting. He does have some co-workers that are black which are a big difference but those are the minority in the office he works in.

I am trying to help him see people as equal and convinced him to vote for Obama and come with me and other friends to burn a confederate flag to put on youtube. (It was something I saw being done by the NAACP speaking out against racism and white supremacists)

How can I explain to my bf that ignorance such as theirs does not come from their skin but from how they were raised? How Can I convince him that not all blacks are like that?

You are worrying too much. Your bf is not a racist. He is just trying to share with you about the stress he has in the office with the people he works with. And yet what? you don't care about it, you look past it with your fear of him becoming a racist, and trying to tell him that he is becoming a racist. I think he should dump you or something. You didn't share your sympathy for him, the stress that he endures all day at work. I think, for him, he doesn't even care about the AA movement that you are so passionate about. Then why trying to push him into it? You might just push him into the way of a racist. Give him a break and try to love him and try to share his feelings, without all the politic and human right things. And tell him about your problems when it's the right time.

Spend enough time with people from enough different places and you will be surprised how easy it is to understand people who talk very differently from you.

No this isn't a job where I work with the public. This is where I sometimes hate being liberal because of bullshit like this. If I were to work with the public that's one thing but most of the times i've contacted tech support i was 16 and im 20 now... you expect me to travel all over at age 16-19?! Jesus still my highschool years and about to enter college!

But for the average American to just get quick service on help with using a product or phone... we should be able to call and say the info as they type it in.. and they say oh I'm sorry what did you say? They ask the same questions because sometimes THEY Can't understand you. That gets VERY frustrating. Like I said working with the public yes I would need experience on different languages to a point... but this is sitting in my own home trying to figure out why my phone has no signal and I have more important things to do with my time then repeat myself and then ask what the hell they just said.

I think the impending challenges of adulthood are forcing you to go off on living tangents. I think this obsession with the confederacy and black America is less a genuine interest, more an intentional distraction from academics. If you put as much effort into your studies as you put into talking about the confederate flag, you probably would've been out of high-school by now.

I highly advise you to finish your education. Not 3 years from now, not a GED at 30, but take advantage of high-school because it's a significant stepping stone into manhood. If you take that advice, years from now you'll look back on your posts and wonder "What was I smoking?"

I am talking about certain people doing something that can be classified as stereotype.. There is reasons to why THESE particular people are doing it because common sense not all are like that. Its as if you all really don't believe me like it can't possibly EVER HAPPEN! Do you hear me saying all gays have aids? A big number of them do because society keeps gays in public school from thinking that they should be safe too as well as conservatives wanting to ban condoms. Alot of gays are taught that they don't need protection because they can't get pregnant or they aren't taught the seriousness.. hence they are more prone to HIV risk.
