Hello out there!

I was watching ABC 7 news tonight (for those of you who don't know, that's the Los Angeles, Ventura, and Orange Counties local news) when the female anchor did a promo for the "Hunky Santa" at the Beverly Hills Plaza. To those who don't know about this, rather than having the fat, jolly old guy play Santa, they pick a young stud instead.

I was enjoying the promo until the ditzy female anchor said, "Step aside kids, this Santa is for Mamas!" I know this sounds really stupid, but that comment, and all others like it, really irritate me!

Why does she assume that there are going to be NO MEN going to visit hunky Santa? When people make hetero-normative blanket statements like that, it feels to me that they're just denying that gay men and women exist. I probably shouldn't take it personally, but I've heard people making comments like that that exclude gay people my whole life and I'm so tired of it! Why can't these straight people say something akin to "This Santa is for the adults," instead of just making an assumption that a hunky Santa is ONLY going to appeal to straight females? Let's also remember the huge number of gay men that flock to that mall!

What's worse about hetero-normative statements, is that straight people make them all the time and never stop to consider that they might be irritating! One time I was talking to a female acquaintance, and some idiot straight guy said to me, "I can tell you want to fuck her!" (I'd like to point out that this imbecile didn't know that I am gay.) Similarly, I saw someone type a statement about Louis Van Amstel from "DWTS" and Kelly Osborne, so I know that more straight people are saying things like that than just the heteros around me.

I wonder how they would like it if we started making statements like that to them? If we see two guys talking, we remark to one of them, "I can tell you want to fuck him!" Or perhaps advertise a hunky Santa saying, "Step aside kids, this Santa is only for the gay gentlemen!"

I know this post is a little rambling, but does anyone else get irritated by comments like this?

Call the station and complain. They should realize that there are gay men out in the LA area who would love to see a hunky Santa for a change. I know I would love to see one here in Philly.

I agree, but it sorta gets me more when I hear gay men and women say things like that. Once, while watching ELLEN she said how some guy (David Beckham?) was going to finally be on the show and "all the ladies" would be so thrilled. Um, she should know that some women would be thrilled and that so would some men. I'm sure it's not intentional when anyone does it, but it irks me more when gays and lesbians say things like that.

The Hunky Santa this year is James Ellis.
Wow, I'd like to sit on his lap!

I don't get the complaint.

And i don't get the attraction to the market blonde, either.

The complaint is that it's annoying when heterosexuals discriminate by exclusion. By saying "Hunky Santa is for the Mammas" she didn't acknowledge that there might be many men who want to go see him to... That lack of acknowledgment is discrimination by way of exclusion. I don't know how to make it any clearer.

I'm sorry, but that's stupid. She was clearly referencing the kids in that statement - you're asking for far too much if you wanted her to go "Sorry kiddo, this Santa is for the Straight Mothers and the Gay Fathers out there!" just to appease those who take EVERY FUCKING THING as a slight. Or as you call it, discrimination by exclusion. Most kids have moms, she made a side joke for the mothers out there. Really, nothing more to that.

I'm all for gay rights, and being inclusive, but this is sincerely ridiculous. ](*,)

Well, I'm sorry, but I respectfully disagree. I feel we should consider the feelings of every minority when we make generalizations. I don't believe in discrimination by exclusion.

P.S.: It's hardly "stupid" to want the acknowledgment that you deserve, especially when you're a consumer! Nor is it stupid to want equality. You're not equal when they don't even acknowledge your existence!

If you TRULY want to consider the needs of EVERY minority every time you speak, you'd need to simulcast in the major AND minor languages in the area, include not only gay fathers, but bisexual mothers and fathers, lesbian mothers, straight mothers, adoptive parents, and so on and so forth. But see, you're not looking for that - though you're being horrendously PC, you're being so for purely selfish reasons.

I don't see why you think that her personal side joke was so horrible and such a slap in the face because she didn't include gay men in it. I simply do not get it - just because the man is eye candy(to some - he's certainly just another muscled up blonde to me, and if we're gonna play up the sexy Santa role, i'd MUCH prefer than guy in Canada who's name starts with a Z, to this guy), doesn't mean he's auto-marked for gay men.

You. Want. Too. Much. It was a simple joke - a wink amongst friends, an aside, a spot of joy. Not a fucking political statement.

And you have the right to your opinion, however erroneous it may be.

If this one's just for the mamma's I'm sure we can assume its not for the gay dadda's, twinks, bears, jocks, emo's, nerds, goths, skaters, swimmers, athletes, surfers, skiiers, motor bike enthusiased and all the other gay people. This one is JUST for the mamma's.

Also am I the only one that finds the sexualisation of Santa disterbing? He's supposed to be all jolly and fatherly (hence his other name of FATHER christmas). He shouldn't be a 20 something muscle hunk. He should be a fatherly older gentlemen, with a big bushy beared and a FULL red suit. The only thing that rapes my child like ideals of Santa is Gamerbears avatar. Seriously dude, my inner child crys everytime I see it.

I agree with Lord Booticus -

While the hunky Santa is nice to look at,
he will never be able to replace this guy:
