Seriously, where did this come from and how long is it going to last? They're all about equally funny, which is not very, and they all have about as much content as the eye-rolling emoticon. I never realized there were so many completely boring ways to say, Oh no you dit-ent.

I'm guilty. I use gifs primarily to derail threads I don't like and start a gif war with some jubbers. They are quite fun. Using actions of a certain star, show, animal or person(s) trapped in an endless loop to express a emotion (or more) via the faceless Internet has its benefits.

It's the evolution of the forum and a new way of expressing yourself. I am pretty sure when emoicons (:) -.-! :S) came out, there were people against it. It will probably die down when there's a new obnoxious way of posting.
 
I'm starting to feel the same way SoS.

I don't mind them when they are accompanied by an actual typed out, worded response. They only really annoy me when people don't bother to type any response but instead just post a gif an leave it at that. If you can't be bothered writing a response why bother replying to the thread at all....
 
The only problem I see is that JUB went to great expense to speed things up for us only to end in us waiting for 30 megs of GIFs to download before the thread opens. It's a pissing contest to them.

I've been blocking people who use them persistently, and some threads are very short. I've opened threads with 19 responses only to find 6 posts which haven't been blocked. It's ridiculous.

I'm paying good money to have an enjoyable experience here as a JUB supporter so I don't have to wade through advertisements, but I'm forced to wade through pages and pages of GIFs which add nothing whatsoever to a thread. I'm thinking of demanding a refund if JUB doesn't do something about them.
 
They're all pretty low-brow.

And I'm never quite sure if it's like people who dress up like Jersey Shore because we're all being satyrical and going to a fun hipster party where we dress like that because it's the theme, or because they just. don't. know.

I think they're like beards. Occasionally you find one that looks really good and was worth the effort, but most people should just shave them off.
 
A select few are quite funny and well timed.

99% aren't funny or relevant and just come across as gimmicky. I find gimmick posters rarely effective because most just aren't funny and clever enough, which is the same with these gif's on a smaller scale.

Well, I've paid the same good money and I like them. So now what?

If your only complaint is that your internet connection is slow so it becomes bothersome to open GIF-laden threads, how is any of that the responsibility of JUB to solve for you?

I understand that you are speaking to your concerns, but you really do need to bring something more compelling to the debate than " GIFs which add nothing whatsoever to a thread".
 
I was actually expecting to see quite a bit more gifs in this thread than there is.....

I feel a wee bit let down :(

When a GIF has no reference and has no relation to the conversation that I can see, then it's a GIF which adds nothing whatsoever to a thread.

I don't have a slow internet connection. I'm not using a slow compute. But, when I download 30 megs of animated GIFs when I open a conversation, they should mean something.

Besides, JUB is paying for the bandwidth to transmit all that stuff. . . over and over and over again, virtually every time someone opens a thread that's filled with them.

As rampant as pretentiousness is on JUB, this is probably one of the most self-absorbed things I've ever read.

Is it possible, work with me here, that it may (sometimes) be an inside joke you're not in on? Or a cultural reference that flies over your head? Nah, couldn't be that now could it? :roll:
