Ok this is a long story so i'm sorry up front.

Picture it...Sicily 1957...um opps #-o that's the golden girls...

Sacramento last tuesday. I'm cooking bacon for a sandwich. i have swim trunks on so i can run down to the pool for a bit once the bacon is done. while i'm waiting i sit on the balcony reading... after some time the smoke detectors go off. place is full of smoke. my bacon burnt. i rush in and pull the skillet off the stove. the skillet is a new skillet with curved sides rather than straight sides. hot grease slouches out of the pan onto my left thigh and foot. doesn't hurt immediately and i'm worried the alarms in the apt will trigger the sprinklers so i'm running around trying to turn on the fans to blow the smoke away from the detectors. Ahhh see this is the draw back to having cathedral ceilings...they are 24 feet high and i can't reach the detectors to turn them off.

about 5 minutes go by and i realize my leg and foot are really hurting. i run in and wash the grease off my leg and oh man is it red. foot also. very painful  so i run cold water over my leg and that helps. take my leg/foot out and pain comes back within seconds. i sit on the patio for about 30 minutes with my leg in cool water trying to figure out what to do. i can't move my leg/foot because within seconds i can't hardly stand up.

finally i soak an ace bandage in cold water wrap my foot, and a second bandage for my leg. take a small bucket of cold water to the car and drive about 3 blocks to the pharmacy. got dermoplast and something else the pharmacist recommended. no blisters so it's probably only first degree and no need to see a doctor. kept in in water the rest of the night between applications of dermoplast. i stayed home from work wed and used aloe and the redness and pain was mostly gone. pain was almost all gone by weds evening. so i go back to work thurs and friday.

flash forward to sunday night. pain is back now...burn on my leg is greenish in color and is showing signs of infection (heat, and inflammation). I go to the ER this morning (about 10) i'm there until 12:30. I have a second degree burn with an infection. now i'm on 2 antibiotic pills and an ointment. i can hardly walk it hurts so much. although thankfully it doesn't hurt when i'm sitting or laying down. the doctor thought the pain now was a result of the infection

ok this is where everyone hugs and kisses me. !oops!

thank you for listening.
i think i'm staying home tomorrow.

Oye! That sounds nasty! Lots of hugs and kisses for you!

(*8*)(*8*)(*8*)(*8*)(*8*)(*8*)(*8*)

My mom did the same thing when I was really young, but she definitely felt the pain right away! She somehow spilled the grease all over her arm and she had at least 2nd degree burns. We had to take her to the hospital right away but amazingly not a single scar! I hope the pain for you goes away quickly and the infection goes away(*8*)

Owie owie owie owie owie owie owie owie owie!:bartshock

Perhaps you have learned to never never never under any circumstances leave bacon unattended. Tsk!

Oh, I hate getting burnt! It's one of my phobias! And one that I have a good reason for... I've burned myself badly on a number of occasions in my childhood... I fried my hand against a hot iron, I blistered my shoulders on a tanning mat, I seared the skin off my knee by leaning against a radiator, and I set my face on fire with a flaming marshmallow... and these are just the most dramatic. I won't go near bacon without an apron and an oven-mitt.

Shall I kiss the boo-boo make it better? Or rather kiss in the vicinity of the boo-boo? Since the boo-boo is slathered in ointment and covered in bandages and probably doesn't smell very nice?

OUCHI!

(*8*) (*8*) (*8*) (*8*) (*8*) (*8*)

I didn't think that you were suppost to use water on a burn.....

for a mild burn (like a mild sun burn or when touching a hot pan for a moment)...aloe vera is really good....I also keep some burn spray and neosporin (antibiotic) ointment in my first aid kit as well.

Good Heavens !!!

Well, thank goodness you're alright, Michael !
(Here comes the expected hug and kiss: (*8*) )

Once the antibiotics have done their job, I'd strongly recommend some
*fresh* aloe applied as often as possible to the burn site....

(Oh yeah, and get a TV, would ya ?? ;) )

Luv ya,

Joshy

owww. :( (*8*) (*8*) Can I kiss it better for you? ;) Hope your leg heals up fast.

Mikey! I'm feeling sick knowing you're not well. It must be that link through the TARDIS or something. All you can do now is take it easy, follow the doctor's orders and rest up. I think we may need to get you a George Foreman Grill for your bacon. No more fry pans for you! ;)

(*8*) (*8*) (*8*) (*8*)

/\ i had been using the george forman, but decided the pan was bigger and i could cook 6 slices instead of just 4. and no i never got to eat the bacon. :( it was charred to ash.

here is a picture of my leg from saturday. i wont show you the one from today. it's gross. skin is greenish/red and sloughing off. very nasty.

i was putting aloe on it up till today, and the doctor didn't say to stop but she didn't say to keep doing it either she just gave me the prescription for the ointment in addition to the 2 pills (and my god one of the pills is huge!).

thanks for the hugs and kisses. i can't hardly walk at the moment so i think i'm going to have to take a sick day tomorrow.

^ ACK!

Now I know you won't be allowed a fry pan again! [-X

Burns are the worst, I feel for you! I am just getting over a burn on my arm, reaching into an oven to get a pan and got it on my arm, it's going to be a nice scar. Take the antibiotics, and the ointment. . .happy healing!!

mikey

im soo sorry to hear that you hurt yourself

you have been missed

please take care of yourself and get better soon

I hate to hear when people i care about are in pain :(

Mikie:

I am sooooo sorry about your burns!

If you can think of it, if you have a next time....

Regardless of where the burn is located, run to the freezer and get lots of ice and hold it on the burns............it will hurt, the ice will, but it will draw out the burn from the skin and stop the sking from blistering up too much!

You MUST do it right away or it will NOT work as effectively, but it will still work to some degree if you are late in getting it on.....

Man, burns are the worst thing to happen to a bloke!(*8*) (*8*)

Mikey...you poor baby!!! A friend of ours just went through a bad 2nd/3rd degree burn on his arm from a grease fire. He was lucky though that he called us so quickly and we were able to get him to the ER to get treated. It looks much better now than it did in April when it happened, but it is still a long process of healing.
Take care and listen to what the doctor tells you!! (*8*)

If I were closer, I'd be your nursemaid. You'd LOVE my spongebaths...

Here's to a speedy recovery doll!

(*8*)

and:kiss:   f       for you!I'm glad you got treatment finally, but that is scary..everything looked like they weren't that serious, but you can never tell for sure ....just glad you're on the mend and have the infection under control.

thanks everyone for all the hugs and nice thoughts.

i thought i was doing better today. But the antibiotics are making me sick to my stomach and i had chills for about an hour. :( the directions on the pills say to take on an empty stomach 1 hour before or 2-3 hours after. i've tried that now 4 times. they say i can try crackers with the pills if they make me sick at my stomach. well...i went to target (3 blocks down the street) and got sick there. good thing i was close to the cleaning isle, i snagged a bucket. sucks to have been the shelf guy in the next isle over cause i had to tell him about it. then i dry heaved for like an hour after getting home.

so now i'm eating chicken noodle soup and will try taking the medication in a little while. cross your fingers. :)
