Have you guys seen the show "Political Animals" on USA network? Starring Signourney Weaver as a Hillary Clinton-esque woman who was formerly the first lady, and now the secretary of state.

Soo.......one of her sons, "TJ", is openly gay and he is an alcoholic, and is shown doing drugs and snorting cocaine. Oh, and he tried to commit suicide once before. TJ also hooks up with random guys he finds on the internet.

But, her other son, "Douglas" is straight and is the "good son" and who seems to do everything right.

WTF is up with all of these TV shows portraying gay men as troubled men - as in, drunkards and drug abusers who f*ck random people??

Desperate Housewives had "Andrew" who was Bree's son, also an alcoholic who ran away from home and later became a drunkard.

I'm tired of all of these negative portrayals of gay men. Basically we're either super effeminate and into fashion, hairstyling and excessive dieting OR we're drug addicts who hook up with different guys every night.

Where are the POSITIVE PORTRAYALS of gay men -- well mannered men who are the "good sons" who have stable relationships, don't use drugs, and are not too flamboyant??

:grrr:

Um, have you actually watched any recent tv with gay characters in it? Like, I dunno, Glee? Skins? Teen Wolf? Modern Family? They all have what you want. Heck, even True Blood in a few instances! And that's without going into soap land, where every show now has at least one token gay character.

Also, other than your fake outrage, I have a problem with your definition of "positive portrayal". I fail to see how being flamboyant is negative - that's both sexist and bigoted ("women = less", "feminine gay men = less"). And what's the problem with being BOTH the good son AND a party boy?

Seriously, get out more, you'll be surprised how black and white the world is not.

I'm looking forward to watching tonight's episode as I absolutely loved the pilot.

Sigourney Weaver's character makes it very clear that TJ's troubles stem both from the vitriol people spewed at him for being the gay son of a president and the press forcing him to come out before he was ready. As for Douglas being the "good son," I have more than a sneaking suspicion that his path won't be smooth once the plot starts rolling.

I LIKED that Andrew on DH was not a neutered, safe stereotype (it was about the only thing on the show I could stand past the first season) and had some grit.

I don't like grit. I like manicured lawns, streets lined with jacarandas, and homeowners' association meetings.

I'm a total Bree. ..|

Down to her political beliefs, love of the 2nd amendment, and immaculate housekeeping. When I am stressed out, I like to bake cookies.

... You just defeated your own topic by post #5.

Judging that the OP worships Desperate Housewives and Good Christian Bitches, and hell like I know other gay-themed series/movies in which gays, along with other characters, are portrayed as rich bastards with first-world problems surrounding their very plots, I can see why she dislikes Political Animals.

I'd reckon she'd dislike Shameless and Oz. I want to put Queer as Folks, but then I realise the first world problems in there.

animals fit

da dudes hot then?

anyway real life sure a betta commerical haaaaa

thankyou

I'm a fan, and TJ's problems, as someone mentioned above have nothing to do with being gay, he turned to drugs because he hate the media, and how they forced him to come out before he was ready( I really hope we find out how they did that), and at least he is not a blatant stereotype, I'm looking at you Modern Family and Glee, you can give characters stereotypes, but do you have to give them all stereotypes. I love his relationship with Doug, everyone needs a brother like Doug, even after all TJs screw ups, Doug is still there for him.

I forgot to record it to my DVR...

Actually gay men have a higher percentage of being addicted or alcoholic as straights

I was told it about 10 % higher in among gay men then their straight counterparts.

Maybe it's our lifestyle or some weird shame we have in being gay. We do have a problem.

I just watched Political Animals and I see nothing wrong in that show.

Fucking outstanding show.... if you have spent anytime with American politics it should be like an old story...

Every shitty and good attribute of those in the office and surrounding the guy in the seat.
