why can't those measurements be converted to metric systems immediatleee ?? LOL
Why stuck with the OLD ways of measurement ?

rant over :)

President Carter tried to force metric conversion in the US back in the '70s. It was revoked by President Reagan. No more centigrade temperatures in weather reports. No more road signs in kilometers. The only relic is that liquor is still sold in metric bottles.

president reagan is history.
Is he dead yet ?

English vs. Metric is like arguing PC vs. Mac. They both work.

ALL science uses metric system.
All Australian schools use metric system along time ago but for some reason some people still stuck with feet & inches.

There are too many systems but I haven't used just one my whole life so now they all confuse me. :(

Even the English don't use the "English system" anymore.

Oh yes we do.

The government and the wretched european union has tried to inflict some metric measurements on us, but if you ask an Englishman how much he weighs he'll tell you in stones and pounds, how tall in feet and inches and how far in miles. And long may it remain so!

I only know inches because everyone always measures their dick there dick in inches.

Thats how I learnt that one.

Those of us who have science-related jobs effectively have to work in metric because it makes the maths one HELL of a lot easier.

The result of which is that I know exactly what 5.5 grams of potassium permanganate looks like, but couldn't tell you what 300g of butter looks like without first mentally dividing by 28.

(it's just over ten and a half ounces, BTW)

What i REALLY don't get is why US cookbooks insist on measuring everything by VOLUME rather than weight. Do you guys REALLY not know how to use a set of scales?

"...if you ask an Englishman how much he weighs he'll tell you in stones and pounds..."

Would a Welshman or Scot say the same?

We share the love of Imperial Measurements with the economically advanced and enlightened democracy of Myanmar, or has the junta changed back to Burma this week.

the Americans have it right, any one who uses that metric thing is archaic....join the new millennium people.

Canada and the US began the switch at the same time and were to complete the switch in, I believe, about 10 years. I remember the US getting part way through the switch before having to go to the added expense of switching everything back again. It remains 1 of 3 countries in the world which does not use the metric system. (Liberia and Myanmar are the other two.)

And, even though it's not metric, the US spells it incorrectly. A 'meter' is a manufactured mechanical measuring device. A 'metre' is a standard unit of length slightly longer than a yard.

The sad part of this is that the U.S. can be quite arrogant in insisting on using the imperial system rather than converting to metric which makes much more sense...

:confused::confused::confused:

Indeed. If you can count to 10, you know metric.

I agree completely with you. ..|

YES!

The craziest are the British weighing themselves in stones. That's like stating your height in (horse) hands.

There's nothing wrong with stones.

If someone tells me their weight in kilos, it makes no sense to me. I can't tell you a thing about their weight.
