A couple of weeks ago he was filling out personnel forms for new job, and said "Oh, you won't get any of my pension if I die becuase we're not in a Civil Partnership. Sho that's something we'll need to think about for the future".

Who says romance is dead, eh? Just need a ring on a certain finger.....

before i could get health insurance through my bf's work we had to have a paper notarized that we were a gay couple. it was so silly and we did it at the bank with everyone watching.even when i use our insurance-which is next to never since i have not seen a doctor in a couple years-they always ask who he is on my card. is he my father or brother or what? i told one person he was my spouse and they didn't get it. i than had to spell it out that we were a gay couple.i'm gonna get my own insurance through work cause even though i am his spouse we still pay more than a straight couple would.

Maybe he was hinting at something when he mentioned "civil partnership?" I don't know I think I'm reading too much into these things. It's nice that you're being romantic and yet down to earth and practical at the same time! I think that's even cuter than just having a ring on your finger!
 
It’s important to establish a relationship through legal documents, if you are in committed relationship. I’ve known cases where a person has been left homeless when the partner died and the partner’s family put him out on the street. A friend of mine died two weeks ago and his daughter is challenging the will that leaves most of his assets to his male spouse. I also know people who were excluded from their partners’ side at the hospital, and even from their funeral, because they were not legally related.

I live in Connecticut where civil unions give gay couple all the rights and responsibilities of marriage available under state law. However those rights are not recognized by any federal agency and are not available when you are out of the state.

My husband and I have been together many years, have a joint bank account and own a house together. The lawyers I know, recommend that even with a civil union and a church wedding, we should have wills, durable powers of attorney for finances, health care proxies, living wills and other documents to ensure that we get as many of the rights of legal spouses as possible.

We have substantial IRA portfolios and we are each other’s beneficiaries. Both our families (parents, siblings, children, grandchildren, etc.) love and support us, and our relationship. However, we know that the smell of money can change people and we need to make sure we are both protected if the other were incapacitated or died.

Wanting to take care of the person you love is romantic, even when it involves lawyers and legal documents.

Second, I agree with megustamyn, that you need to get all of the legal ducks in a row. money has a strange way of destorying families and resulting in nasty things happening.
 
Love is wonderful but money is money. Keep a level head and make sure you're both protected if something goes wrong. And talk to a lawyer -- separate lawyers!
 
Hmmm.....that sounds like something I'd have to keep in mind when I do find my other half. Anyway, argomac, you sound like you have an awesome other half! I'm melting too........;)
